Another thing I like about the signing, it goes thru Caleb's 5th year option year. So technically the entire extension is on a rookie QBs deal window. They can assess his value again with the new cap availability in 2027-2028 after the Bears have won a Super Bowl. I would like to lock down Edwards at LB too, they need continuity at all levels.

We are 10 days away from the 2025 NFL Draft! Give me your top 3 players that YOU believe will be selected by the Bears if they stay at #10. I am going with Warren - TE (people have comped him to McBride, matchup problem, used like a WR3) Banks - OT (replaces Jones at LT Day 1) Grant - DT (If Dexter slides outside sometimes, DT is a bigger hole and needs to get younger quickly with Billings and Jarrett.) After doing what feels like a million different mock drafts, and looking at the needs of the teams in front of the Bears, it feels like Ward and Sanders will go in the top 9. Hunter, Carter, and Graham are the 3 positional players that I am most sure of that won't be available at 10. I don't think Campbell, Jeanty, or McMillan fall either, but they are the possibles. That leaves Warren, Banks, and Membou from the consensus boards. Sanders again is the key. I think it goes Ward, Hunter, Sanders, Carter, Graham as the top 5. Then Jeanty - LV has huge hole at RB, Campbell - NYJ to protect Fields, McMillan - CAR needs a WR. That leaves NO. If Sanders is gone, they could actually pick Dart here, or go BPA, which is probably Barron. If NYG doesn't pick Sanders, I think NO takes him, making the top 9 unchanged, just scrambled.

Based on that list, OL and WR seem like the 2nd round targets.
-
I agree and think they should plug the few holes they have first on oline and dline. I just have a feeling the Bears will take Jeanty or Warren. I won't regret it if they get two rd 2 studs like Ersery or Conley at LT or Grant or Nolen at DT.
-
You are correct, Johnson will mold the players he has but he gets the chance to add a piece to fit exactly what he wants to do. Whether Jeanty, Warren or a long shot Mathew Golden. If he sees the OL as a weakness he will want an LT, or another pass rusher on defense. Most everyone has ignored the position but we could take a shut down corner at 10 also. I think it will be at a premium position LT - Edge -RB-CB ( TE or WR) to a lesser degree. Him and Poles both talked about their first 4 picks were going to be looked at as a group pick. What is the best option at each spot to maximize their draft . Can you get a quality edge at 10 or 39 or 41-72? RB, DT LT, ect. TE, RB and DT are deep so later rounds make sense. LT and DE are not.
-
I'm not trying to trash him, I would love watching him. I just don't think the bears are going to draft him at 10. If he is available to them, I can see Poles choosing multiple picks in return. If we still didn't have several holes to fill, it would change the situation a lot. I think 2 players away from a competent defense. We need another weapon or two to maximize Johnson's offense. AND the OL needs more depth and a LT if that's a priority to you. I think we are one year away from adding a Warren or Jeanty to our lineup for final touches to a SB run. I could be off big time on my reasoning and 6 different positions could be our pick at 10.
-
Ben Johnson is not going to run the Detroit Lion offense. He will mode the offense to the talent he has. He has said this, he has hired coaches he knows little about, and he has players that are different, so this is a whole new beginning. All we know is he likes to scheme to attack defenses. I think they want more at RB than Swift and Roschon, so getting a guy who is more might mean rd2 or Jeanty if he falls to 10. The Bears haven't run the ball well for a few years and could use a top 100 player at that position.
-
Jeanty is not one dimensional. He's generational at what he does. I can't wait to see what he does. Even though I want the Howie Roseman approach to drafting, I would welcome Jeanty with open arms...
-
Any rb will have a sharing of load. You have to. What you don’t want with a pick this high is a one dimensional back, imo.
-
Good- fair price for an above average slot corner whose best years are still ahead of him. Plus it says something to rest of club for rewarding internal guys who are doing the right thing.
-
Jeanty is not the best pass catcher among RBs. I think his drop % is somewhere around 10%. So yes, even with Jeanty there will be someone else sharing the load.
-
For sure. He's done a great job being disciplined and using that wasted year to a long term sustainable outcome, rather than blowing it all early. I think the staff is gonna help a lot with player evaluations, and Poles can be the cap / money / future guy. Perfect.
-
Pretty comparable to the Jalen Pitre deal from a few days ago. Even though he’s technically a safety he functions pretty similar to Gordon in their defense.
-
The Eagles rode Saquon Barkley pretty hard, but even they split carries. I think all teams do, even with feature backs. Saquon got 345 carries Hurts ran it 150 times Other HBs ran it 108 times So even just among HBs, Barkley carried it 76% of the time. 1 out of 4 it wasnt him, not even counting the Hurts carries, WR end arounds etc. So I think you can have a feature back, and still rotate guys in and out to keep them fresh, or "have weapons" Gibbs 250 Carries Montgomery 185 carries Between Gibbs and Monty, Gibbs carried it 57% of the time. If you take Jeanty, you're still gonna give it to other guys. If you take Kaleb Johnson, you're definitely going with a rotation.
-
Poles signing look like big contracts and then 1 yr later they look like bargains. Say what you want about player evaluations but he is managing the cap well.
-
I would like Hendrickson, Parsons, Crosby but the problem is , they come with 30+ extensions of which we don't have. Just draft one in the first and third and hope one of them gives you 10+ every year on cheap contracts.
-
I have to disagree, Johnson talked about weapons. Using several different backs challenges the defense more, keeps them off balance. In 2023 lions could have had BJan Robinson, instead they traded back and took Gibbs. Johnson was asked about that, and he said , we wanted weapons. I think they do want a pounder to use late in games as they have Montgomery, several could fill that role. I forget to mention before Damien Martinez as a RB that fits. Watch his tape, he runs over people. As much as Jeanty would be a great addition, he is not getting 90% of the carries in Johnson's offense. Of which I think drafting him at 10 is unlikely. Last year, Montgomery had 185 carries and Gibbs had 250. For comparison Bjan Robinson had 304 carries.

I was close on the Gordon deal prediction .

now that there's a separate thread, I'll cut and paste this here from the other one. good! He's an impact player, and it's not THAT much money. Has anyone ever heard that term "slot corner" before rather than "nickel back"? Maybe it's schefter's way of saying the deal transcends nickels, and recognizes him as a corner. Because Gordon's $13.3M a year is nowhere near HOU Derek Stingley Jr $30M/yr CAR Jaycee Horn $25M/yr MIA Jalen Ramsey $24.1M DEN Patrick Surtain $24M/yr MIN Byron Murphy $22M/yr GB Jaire Alexander $21M/yr ATL AJ Terrell $20.25M/yr CLE Denzel Ward $20.1M/yr NE Carlton Davis $20M/yr BAL Marlon Humphrey $19.5M/yr In March of last year, Jaylon Johnson signed a 4 year $76M contract ($19M/yr)
-
Is it just my perception or does Poles prefer to go with a higher guarantee and a lower AAV on his recent deals? I can't really say that with Gordon since he's now the highest paid NB in the league but $13.3/yr seems reasonable.
-
I didn't see this so I posted a separate post for it, not trying to supercede your news.
-
A no brainer just got done. It seems that Poles is making the right choices all the time. Let Jenkins leave Resign Gordon Let Allen leave
-
Great signing, might seem like a lot on the surface, but all while Caleb is on a rookie deal, and that position is slowly becoming one of the most important and versatile on the defense.
