OL / DL Analysis...

After watching the game on DVR, I was able to see a few things.

DL - I'm not worried by talent anymore. I really like what I saw from McClellin, Wootten, Davis, Melton and Collins. Seems like we are going to have plenty of push from the interior. Peppers may feast this year. Idonije may lose his starting position to a platoon of Wootten and Mac. Damn, McClellin can close fast.

OL - Spencer and E Williams were complete turds - horrible. Louis and Garza looked OK. Now the tackles. None of them looked all that good. C Williams looking the best of the 3. Carimi and Williams engage their assignment much faster than Webb / Williams at tackle. Webb is physically impressive, but is often late on assignments which leads to pressures and sacks.(I saw at least 3) Williams is very quick to set up on assignment, but seems to just hold on once engaged, unlike Webb who displays punch.

All told, I think they know what they have in Williams with solid decision making and average physical ability. Then Webb, with the opposite. If you put Williams head on Webb you would have a perennial all pro.

My guess is that Webb is getting a longer look because they are not liking what they see. It's the % of bad snaps that will get him benched and Cutler killed.

On the D Line, I thought the first team was really bad. I'm not sure if they employed the "Get blown off the snap" technique or not, but if they did, they certainly got that part of it down. Manning had a day and a half to throw. Obviously Peppers was out and it is pre-season, but I was not impressed with the 1st team defense at all in that game.

McClellin looked good though. Had a handful of good plays and a few bad plays, including the penalty and him getting ate up on the goal line for a TD run.. Other than that though he looked really quick, took good angles with great closing speed.. pretty much everything you'd want out of a 3-4 LB, however, playing DE he's just not even close to strong enough to help in run support. He's likely to be a pure pass rush specialist in his rookie season until he puts on more muscle or he develops better technique to support his run defense.

The O-Line looked equally as bad as the D-Line did for the majority of the game. Webb up to his usual tricks of false starting, Edwin Williams is not a center, and Chris Williams left a lot to be desired with his play.. Didn't notice Lance Louis a lot, so I guess that's a good thing. Spencer had one rough moment but overall I thought played okay. I have to keep reminding myself its PRESEASON, and they did run a lot of vanilla offense, but so far I haven't noticed that much of a difference between the Martz offense and this one. I noticed there was a roll out called during one of the series Cambell was in.

All in all, you can't really take too much away from pre-season performance. I think Zach Zaidman tweeted it earlier, the Bears pre-season has never been an indicator of how the Bears season will go. Cutler better play in this next one though. I want to see him in there for a couple series with Marshall. Cambell made Kyle Orton look like Dan Marino throwing the deep ball with how many check downs he threw in last night's game.. Stretch the field some! That offensive performance was tough to watch.

Highlight Players:

- Shea McClellin

- J.T Thomas

- The D Lineman with the weird name (Otegwu ?)

- Alshon Jeffery

- Chris Summers

I'm not worried at all. Maybe they didn't look THAT inept on offense, but the last 2 Super Bowl winners lost their first preseason games too.

McClellin was solid and what I like most is that he never gives up on a play. I know it wasn't against Clady and I know it was against Hanie, but his closing speed on that sack was impressive. There is no doubt in my mind that he'll have at least 7 sacks this year. He's doing fast not to, in my opinion.

Ozougwu and Collins were pretty impressive, but again, it wasn't against Beadles, Ramirez, Clady, etc. I can see Ozougwu making this team and Chauncey Davis being the odd man out, as I've never really understood Marinelli's and Lovie's fascination with him. Collins has a shot at the 53 man roster, but I keep thinking that the organization won't give up on Toeaina, although I've always thought that he stinks.

Against Washington, we'll see Peppers for some of the game and Cutler/Marshall/Forte for a quarter or so. That'll be fun. There was no doubt that they were going to keep the gameplan vanilla especially with the weather and the fact that it was the first game, hence why I said yesterday I was going to watch McClellin, because to say I was going to watch for deep slants and posts would've been ridiculous.

Haven't seen the game yet, but sadly it sounds like it could be a game report from last year. In regards to the OL anyway.

The Webb experiment needs to stop before he ends Cutler's season. The fact that they continue to play people out of position and give out starting nods based upon how someone looks on a scale is maddening. Webb has not shown the ability to play competently at LT over the past two years. And since Spencer was horrible at OG, it is crazy that the Bears continue to play him at OG when his natural position is C, and the Bears C is naturally an OG.

Excellent post, I agree with everything you've said.

One other point, after watching our QBs take so much abuse, we tend to focus on pass protection. I haven't seen any running lanes either.

Been a while since we've agreed on anything, but you're spot on about the running game. I've mentioned this a lot in the past, and shown supporting links that cover how the Bears have been one of, if not the worst, teams in the league when it comes to runs stopped behind the LOS.

That's why I was so adamant on Forte getting paid. He has done a lot with little help since he has been with the Bears.

I think this has been mentioned a time or two...

As if I wrote the article myself. I wish Tice would quit dicking around with Williams and having him play three or four different positions. It's unfair to Williams and it's not the same, true opportunity that his pet project Webb has received. It's almost like Tice is stacking the deck in favor of Webb, but Webb just sucks too much to get a trump card.

Webb is going to get every shot to win this, but it's not coming from Tice. Trust me when I say this- Tice truly does not love Webb like some of you make it out to be. Lovie thinks Webb has the tools and so he gets the starts. This is not a guess. I know this.

If Webb fails in 2012, he won't be given chance on top of chance to keep his job. Chris Williams will be the starter. For the time being, I'd be shocked if Webb isn't the starter on 9/9 vs Indianapolis.

And how do you know this?

Remember, it was Tice who drove this train to begin with since he was so enamored with Webb's blocking sled skills.

If true this won't be the first time Lovie has put someone as a starter based on raw athletic ability not performance.

Tice drove the train to get Webb drafted and I think as a 7th rd pick he was worthy of that selection. He has the raw ability to do the job but as with many draft picks you can't measure what is inside a man's head. It's the mental mistakes Webb cannot overcome for whatever reason. Park Williams there and give him some real time to settle back into the role.

Because I have a source who has a really good job inside the Bears organization.

If that's the case, then ask your friend WTF Lovie is seeing/watching if he thinks Webb is capable of playing LT competently. He sure has hell hasn't shown anything near that in the time on the field, so he must be one of those classic practice superstars like Dez "Stone Hands" White.

I don't care who anyone says it's on, cause its always on the HC. Theres and old saying, "go with the devil you know". I think Williams is that.

It's just one of those things where Lovie likes the guy and thinks he has the potential in terms of his size. He also loves Steltz, Hester, etc.

I don't know if the "if that's the case" was sarcasm, so I'll just say that you don't have to trust what I say. Not everything he hears happens and doesn't happen, like for an example- I put on here first that the Bears wanted Mario Williams badly and a few of you believed me. I also said they'd sign him. Unfortunately I was half right, but they were going to get him if Marshall didn't fall in their lap.

Moderate sarcasm for the reasons you've listed.
