nfo, I'm happy to answer again. However, I think you may be mis-construing what I'm getting at. yes, I know well enough the financial situation,etc...but if this incident pans out in a certain direct, I think it is in the Bears' best interest to rid themselves of yet another blemish. I do not want to become the Illinois version of Cincy... If Benson is a drunk miscreant, I want him off the team. If what he says is true, then I'm OK with waiting to see what he can do on the field before letting him go next season. Bottom line, we can get Rhodes and have a decent vet helping Forte, or we can putz around this Benson. Maybe we have to wait until next year to restructire a few contracts,etc...but I look at the cots as negligibel compared to the baqd press and ill will. But, now to answer your question.... Cutting Benson, under these circumstances gains the Bears some modicum of respect not dealing with bad characters... Odds are we can find a cast off that will produce as good as Benson could. If he can produce at all. I follow your logic, but the question is different now that this circumstance has arisen. You really don't dump him today, you dump him after you find what really happened...or you just wait til camp and dump him there and pick up someone else in the meantime. Rhodes, Shmodes, or etc...we can find a bum like Benson rather easily...

Excellent! THen we should be able to trade him to Al Davis!
-
I'm glad you got a chuckle. Did you laugh it up when Rex was throwing pic's left and right last season and in the Super Bowl? I'm uncertain fo the exacts of your stats...but assuming you're right, did Orton's picks cause game changing TO's or were they just errors when we already were winning? I don't hate on Rex for the sheer joy of it. I do not like him because I do not feel he is an NFL calibur QB. He hinders this team. His inconsistency is not something that this team can handle. We need better. I know the beast that is Rex. We still don't know enough about Kyle. Can we give the kid a chance?
-
That's still a ton less than Rex... And 4 more pics does not = big mistake? We're those pics on game ending drives, etc?
-
Less accuracy than Rex? How do you account for Rex's larger total of pics? At least Kyle hits the ball into the dirt, not into the other team's hands.
-
We'll find more details later as the facts come out... But I've got to think this isn't going to generate a long term contract. I think it's justifiable to trade or cut him in all honesty. Not that I think the Bears will... I do not like him. I would prefer the #32 go to a more deserving player.
-
As much as I love the comment... I think we could get a 5th. Heck, it's worth a try.
-
Thanks for the post!

No cutting...TRADE! Someone out there will take a chance (Denver)...
-
I'll be honest...I think the good Rex is a myth. He looked great for a minutes...got figured out, and now is in the realm of being a small Tim Couch. But I understand the thought process behnd the "good Rex" thinking. I just don't believe we will see it. I'm not thrilled with Orton either. But I'd like to at least give the kid a legit shot at it. I like your thinking of best player should play...but I don't trust our coaching staff to make that decision unfortunately.
-
I hear ya...but there is opportunity cost as well. Giving time to him limits reps on guys that really want to contribute. It's not that much loot, and I think we could get a draft pick like a 4th or 5th for him... I guess I'm out of hope for him. But, anything's possible.
-
I commend you on your stock analysis...however, I think that there is opportunity cost you are not factoring in. Having him on the team costs the team not just in finances, but in energy and loss of reps for a worthy back. Don't get me wrong, I believe it's probably worth holding him for a year...let Forte get acclimated slowly as with Williams and some of our new WR's... I think we will be seeing a new QB line up next year, Forte starting (hopefully if he proves worthy), and a whole new look to the offense in general. I just have no issue exploring the possibility of a trade... I too jumped on the Benson wagon...but I feel snake-bitten by that now. No offense taken! Cheers!

Rex almost got what he deserved...he still got coddled. He should have been benched far sooner than he was. Even if you subscribe to the theory that he did really well after the benching, what harm would there have been if he were benched sooner? Could we have not salvaged a few more victories? I'm OK if it were truly an open competition, but I stand by my many comments that this "so called" competition is a farce and Grossman will again be given the job. Honestly, neither guy is taking us anywhere. But I feel like I've not seen Kyle be given the opportunity Rex has been given countless times. It would seem only equitable to do so. After all his winning percentage is probably as good, if not better than Rex's.

Chile, I'm impressed with your optimisim! I am personally tired of giving these bums a plethora of chances...
-
Touche... Given that I work in finance I know all too well all the theories...but at the end of the day investing is just legalized gambling. Feel free to bash goold ol' Kenny all you want... But it's sound logic regardless of how you prefer to spin it and belittle my comments. Cutting losses now is not stupid. It makes financial sense. To go to your beloved financial alnaogy...do you hold onto a stock you know will probably bottom out, or sell while you can still get some money for it? Man, I'd like to know who you've been watching...because one or two good plays from him does not make a career. Yes, can we all agree that the OL stunk. That dead horse has been flogged so many times George Romero has passed on doing the 9th "Night of the Living Dead O-Line" sequel... I do not see a body of work from him that makes me optimistic. Apparently you do...and if that's your sotry, and you're sticking to it. then more power to you. I am not saying cut/trade...I am saying it's worth looking into. Right now there is probably an interested suitor. If and when he sucks again or shows his injuries, interest may bottom out. Sure, he could be the next Earl Campbel. Well...no he won't be the next Campbell. He is not that good. Never will be. I feel very confident in that.

wow...that's kind of a surprise. always seemed like a really low-key guy.
-
Jason, I fully follow you analogy on Bears fans and investors...however...Kenny Rodgers said it best, "you gotta know when to hold 'em, WHEN TO FOLD 'EM..." I think it's time to fold... While Benson could improve with an improved OL and TE play...his injury issues are a major concern. While there is debate on his current injury status..there's no doubt the guy has been plagued by injuries every single season he's been with us. The problem isn't drafting a RB...it's drafting the wrong one.
-
He did...but I don't think you can propperly judge the man as he was a bonafide rookie. And he rarely made big mistakes even then...
-
But maybe a QB would have made a difference... What if Kyle got in and made few mistakes... Rex really was never asked to win any game towards the end. We usually got a quick lead from the D, ST or running game and that was it. Kyle could have done the same...and maybe not turned the ball over so often in the SB... Hindsight is always 20-20, but given that we know we lost the game with Rex, I'd have liked to have a "What If" Kyle played instead...
-
I'm glad you seem so diplomatic! I, for one, have too much emotion and experience invested with these guys, that seeing Rex get it I think will be a big mistake. I could be wrong, but I just don't think so.

OK...I follow now. In 2006, I would find it difficult to bench just looking at those pure numbers. (Let's not forget that Mark Twain once quoted, "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.") But, there were a few games that I recall him stuggling mightily and many "experts" and fans wondered whey he wasn't pulled when the downward spiral was happening... In a few of those games, the D or Hester rescued us. So, I would say, off recolection , about 3 games I would have benched him. Not premanantly, but for those rest of those particular games. He should be man enough to bounce back from a benching and come in an play hard the next game. If not, he's unworthy. He did show last year that he pretty much could do that...to at least some degree. Also, throw up the 2007 numbers and it's a different story... It's one thing to look at a Super Bowl run and another to look at a losing season. If you like Rex, that's your bag. I do not like him as a player. I'm over it. But I can understand whey some people want to give him yet another chance.

Orton. Hands down. Even if Gorssman outdoes Orton by a bit, I still go with Orton. He handled the job well at the end of the season and has never been given the chance to truly start. If Gorssman completely outguns him in training camp, as Much as I'd still like Orton to start, I could not argue agasint Grossman. That's the only way I can personally stomach watching Grossman as a starter (other than injury). I like the kid personally. Seems like a nice kid. But I don't like him as a pro QB...
-
I'm not quite sure what you mean regarding "put on the line and failed". He's failed numerous time. Too many to count. I can buy a few injury games...not the many bad ones Rex has had which seemd to be mostly poor decision making and making simple errors in ball handling that they teach in Pop Warner. I don't fault the injury bug to his failure. Granted, it is a piece that we must consider. As a guy with a history of injury cannot be relied upon...but if her were always injured and a winner, he'd be a keeper (Jim McMahon). I guess I'm still having a hard time following your argument. He had 1 chance where he failed and the team benched him? Yeah maybe. But they should have benched him numerous time before that! He deserved to get benched far more than once...
-
Rex was doing decently before he got hurt, but after he stunk the joint up worse than Hutchinson. I don't believe it will be earned...it will be given as it's been since the beginning of this regime. I didn't believe them then, I don't now. It seems to hold some water with the D, but not with the O.
-
History... THis coaching/mgmt regime seems intent on giving Gorssman more chances than any human on earth... I personally want Orton to start. Rex always looks spectacular in camp and Orton looks off. However, during the prssure of a game, Rex looks like a deer in headlights, and Orton looks calm.
