  4. Gonna be an interesting week. I don't think I want Bevell as the Bears next Head coach, I am tired of exViking castoffs being on the Bears coaching staff. GM Emery has his 3 finalists for Bears coaching job Bevell, Arians or Trestman could be selected as soon as Wednesday After crisscrossing the country for two weeks, Bears general manager Phil Emery has moved to a final round of interviews in search of the franchise's next head coach. Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has a second interview scheduled Tuesday, and Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman are also in the mix, according to multiple sources. Emery could have his man as soon as Wednesday so the new coach can begin assembling his staff before the Senior Bowl begins Monday in Mobile, Ala. There have been 13 known candidates interviewed by Emery since Lovie Smith was fired Dec. 31 and his focus has been heavily on coaches with offensive backgrounds, something that wasn't a surprise after Emery talked in detail about the long-running inconsistencies of the Bears' offense at his Jan. 1 news conference. Bevell interviewed for the first time Saturday in Atlanta before the Seahawks were eliminated in the divisional round of the playoffs by the Falcons. Arians met with Emery on Sunday and he was scheduled to interview with the Eagles on Tuesday, something that is not happening now. Trestman's original interview was Jan. 7. All three known finalists have done impressive work with quarterbacks throughout their careers. Arians, 60, is a leading candidate for NFL Coach of the Year honors for his fill-in work while Colts coach Chuck Pagano was on medical leave battling leukemia. In his first season in Indianapolis, the Colts had 36 new players on what was the NFL's third-youngest roster and 13 players landed on injured reserve. He has been credited for his work with Andrew Luck, Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning, and as the offensive coordinator of the Steelers he twice reached the Super Bowl with patchwork offensive lines. He skillfully handled a relationship with Roethlisberger, a player that can be challenging to manage. Fox analyst Jimmy Johnson reported on his Twitter account last week that Trestman would be the next Bears coach, information that had to be rooted somewhere. The 56-year-old Trestman has coached in the CFL for the last five seasons, posting a 59-31 record and winning Grey Cup championships in 2009 and 2010. He has made stops with eight NFL teams, most recently as the quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach of the Dolphins in 2004. He was the quarterbacks coach for the explosive Raiders offense that reached Super Bowl XXXVII. "I think the skill set that Marc has, being an offensive mind, and then his great relationships that he's had with quarterbacks historically in the NFL and the work he's done with them makes him a good fit for the job," Alouettes general manager Jim Popp said. "A lot of guys want to be head coaches. Some leave the NFL to go to NCAA schools and then once they've proven themselves all of a sudden those college coaches are some of the hot commodity to be an NFL coach. It's no different. Coach Trestman has run a professional team as a head coach for five years. He's had a winning record for five years. He's proven himself as a head coach at a professional level. You can call it what you want, but on-hand training as a head coach and proof goes a long way, goes a real long way. You can't replace that." Bevell, 43, has gotten considerable praise for his work with Seahawks rookie quarterback Russell Wilson, who passed for 385 yards, rushed for another 60 and accounted for three touchdowns in the 30-28 loss Sunday to the Falcons that suddenly made the assistant coach available immediately to the Bears. Bevell is considered a strong communicator and had a close relationship with another player that was challenging for some coaches — Brett Favre. They worked together in Green Bay and Minnesota, reaching an NFC championship game with the Vikings. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll hired Bevell to replace Bears quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates in 2011. One source said Bevell and Trestman would be inclined to consider retaining defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, a move that would provide some semblance of continuity on that side of the ball for an aging unit. It's not known what Arians' plans for his staff are and Emery said he was going to allow the new coach to make decisions on his assistants. It is certainly possible the Bears could retain some assistants from Smith's staff but it appears likely that special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who was one of the 13 candidates, will depart. It is expected he will join Andy Reid's staff with the Chiefs. Emery granted Toub permission to interview in Kansas City and Carolina and indications are he will reunite with Reid even though his contract with the Bears runs through 2013. bmbiggs@tribune.com
  5. This guy got a lot more intriguing after reading this. By Dan Pompei and Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune reporters January 4, 2013 The Bears continue to give strong indications they lean toward hiring an offensive-minded head coach. The latest candidate to emerge on general manager Phil Emery's interview trail was Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, whom the Bears were granted permission to interview next week. Arians earned national recognition this season for guiding the Colts to a 9-3 record as interim head coach while Chuck Pagano battled leukemia. Arians, 60, also helped rookie quarterback Andrew Luck make a seamless transition to the pros while overseeing the league's 10th-ranked offense at 362.4 yards per game. With Arians' help, the Colts transformed last season's 2-14 mark into an 11-5 wild-card berth Sunday against the Ravens in Baltimore. Arians previously was the offensive coordinator for the Browns and Steelers. He was instrumental in the development of two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers were 55-25 in the five seasons Arians served as offensive coordinator as he kept the offense up to speed with a feared defense. "Bruce Arians has impressed with his selflessness. He has been a great personal example of what Chuck Pagano had laid down for the Colts — teamwork, worrying about the guy next to you more than yourself, creating that culture,'' Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said recently. "Bruce has not only been successful in filling in as a head coach and being a head coach in every sense of the word, but also in the way he has carried the torch for Chuck in an incredible way. What a human being he is.'' Arians also overcame his own health scare when he battled prostate cancer in 2007. While Arians is probably the most familiar name on the Bears' current list, Emery has done due diligence in taking a widespread approach toward the search. He interviewed Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan on Wednesday in Atlanta and also reportedly was scheduled to interview Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. Emery has an interview scheduled with Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on Sunday in Denver and is likely to interview Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements sometime next week. Former Northern Illinois standout receiver P.J. Fleck was the Bucs' receivers coach this season under Sullivan. "Monday before I left, I walked into Sully's office and said, 'Really, the Chicago Bears?' And his face was glowing,'' said Fleck, now the head coach at Western Michigan. "He looked at me and said, 'Can you believe it? We're talking about the Chicago Bears.' "I would say one word that describes Mike Sullivan: Balance. When I think of Mike Sullivan, I take a deep breath. Mike Sullivan settles you down. When you look at his offense, it's balanced. You look at his coaching style and everything is balanced. Everything is centered.'' Sullivan didn't have the luxury of working with a Peyton Manning or Drew Brees, as McCoy and Carmichael did, respectively. Clements gets credit for helping Aaron Rodgers' game reach the next level as quarterbacks coach from 2006-2011. Packers running back Ryan Grant talked about what makes Clements such a respected coach. "His knowledge of the game, for one,'' Grant said Thursday. "He understands matchups. He's one of the smartest guys in this game. "Then, his ability to get the most out of his players. He builds a strong connection that can help guys elevate their games.'' The Bears need to elevate their offense after another dismal showing in 2012. Coach Lovie Smith was fired Monday, in part, because of the offense's ineptitude during his tenure. Under first-time coordinator Mike Tice, the Bears finished the 28th in the league in total offense (310.6 yards per game) and 29th in passing offense (187.4 yards per game). Although Emery seems to be on the offensive with this search, he did interview Falcons special-teams coordinator Keith Armstrong and has a Saturday interview scheduled with Cowboys special-teams coach Joe DeCamillis in Dallas. vxmcclure@tribune.com Twitter @vxmcclure23
  6. That is if they don't blow it up, they can bring back and extend players, add a player or 3 via free agency and the draft and try again. If they end up blowing it up, those people can be let go and they have the ability to cut ties with some additional people and save even more money in a rebuilding move. They would then be able to bring in players that fit whatever the new coaching staff's scheme is.
  7. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/17253566-41...-cap-space.html "There will be an incremental increase in the salary cap to $121 million, and the Bears’ combined cap number of their top 41 players is about $14.5 million under that." This offseason is going to be very interesting regardless of this season's outcome.

  11. Go for it, Tice will probably deserve it and I'll cheer ya on as you know how much I love his offensive line and Martz isn't there to take the blame.
  12. Btw isn't there a post by jason about Martz that you could cry about like you have for the last 2 years?
  13. Says the person that whines about everything Jason posts about Terrell Owens...
  14. The only reason Cutler wasn't destroyed sooner was that they were in max protection most of the time. The oline has not been addressed at all this offseason and I feel it is going to bite them at some point this season. Possibly when Webb has his 2 false start of the game or gives up his 3rd sack...
  15. I am sure Cutler loved that pick.....
  16. McCellin in the Pro football weekly draft book was a 4th or 5th rounder. That is were he got it from.
  17. Wow. Maybe Emery grabbed his draft notes from when he was with KC and thought he was still in a 3/4.
  18. This looks like it is going to be a busy draft already!
  19. they swapped positions and Minn also get a 4th, 5th and a 7nd rounder per NFL Network. *updated*
