  7. Agreed whole-heartedly. Hester, IMHO, is ideal as your #3 receiver. It struck me that way from the moment they started calling him their #1. And that's shocking. I actually think Earl Bennett is developing nicely and should stay and be the #2. However, they so very desperately need a big #1 WR.

  18. Hey BrianBear--I couldn't disagree more. We had Polite in here for some preseason games, and it was clear that he was a hammer. The Bears chose to go with McKie, who they like because he can do a little of everything, including carrying the ball. Unfortunately, none of that is really that good anymore, and doesn't really equate to making a difference on the field. Who are they kidding? They don't like to give the FB more than 5 carries a season. He's here to be a blocker first and foremost, and secondarily to catch those little 6 yard passes in the flat. It was a mistake not to upgrade with Polite when they had him in here. It was right there for even us fans to see. I just did a search on this topic, and found some posts from when he was cut along with Dan Bazuin. BTW, I found some quotes from you at the time wanting to keep him around too! LOL! ;-) Here's my note at the time.... Count me among those disappointed to see Polite cut. That guy is a football player that I'd have found a way to keep on the team. Heck, I thought he was a better blocker than McKie as well. Don't we get off the bus running? Then why did we decide to keep the finesse guy around?

  20. Man, all I gotta say is that Lovie and his staff need to re-examine how they evaluate the talent they have in camp. A lot of us here recognized that FB Lusaka Polite was a hammer and yet we let him go despite him busting people up in preseason a few years ago. Last night, that guy was a beast. To me, it's nice to have the RBs that Miami does, but this guy Polite is a difference maker. He was leading the way on just about every run and screen, picked up countless blitzes, and when they needed a yard, this guy would get into his block and get + movement every time. We haven't had that here in ages...unless you wanna count the time that he was in our camp. Doh!
  21. It's something that you could use as a barometer for how well people know the game. Show me the people who actually think it's the line's fault that the quarterback gets stepped on and I'll show you the folks that need to understand that your QB needs to have good footwork and get the hell outta the way. Unless someone went offsides, it's NEVER the line's fault if the QB gets stepped on pulling away from center.

  23. It was most likely the Power O play they so often like to use. Depending on the call and the defensive alignment, the OG and FB will either lead up the hole which could be over the RG/RT area or go around the corner to seal off the edge. It's ultimately the RB's decision to either follow his blockers or cut it back. In this case, it sounds like he either cut it back, or the inside penetration was too much for him to even get to the POA. In a vacuum, it's a decent play, but if we're facing a goal line defense, there is very likely going to be a submarining defensive line, getting some push back. I'd prefer more of a straight ahead blocking play down there. You see, that call against your typical 6-5 goal line front means the pulling guard has to take a deeper drop to get around and past Olin and Garza. If those guys are pushed back, the play is severely sunk. Further, the increased amount of time to get there slows Forte down, allowing any backside pursuit to make the play. The reach or down block used to cover for the pulling guard, if he had a man over him, becomes extremely difficult to make, and that player could track down and ruin the play. I like a pulling guard for Power O and trap blocks more than most people. I've been critical of Turner's O ever since the Salaam years because it was too straight ahead and up the middle, with little line movement. It further reinforced my stance that Turner is an excellent coach for calling the passing game but has a very poor feel for the running portion. You guys are gonna throw stuff at me, but the best play caller we had for the ground game here in the last 15 years was Shoop. Unfortunately, he had a poor feel for the passing offense.
