Just got an email from him - said he was away for a couple of days, will be here soon to make his pick.

My My, I must be getting old, how could I have forgotten about the babes?

Hi Grouchy Bear, it sure is great to see you return. I understand your frustration. I think we all share that with you. Many of the old guard have migrated over, some missing, but this time of year many of us took a break from the action until it got closer to preseason. Hopefully, by the time the 1st game in August kicks off, many more will join us. Again, welcome back, all of us hdere from BearsTalk missed your posts.

I have to go into work this morning for a few hours to finish up the work on my Team that I supervise. Had to take some time off do to some health problems and that is why I was around for the past couple of days (decided to audition for the Summer Olympics gymnastics team, did some somersaults and cartwheels down a slope in my back yard only to have my progress stopped by a large immovable object just as I was picking up some good speed, LOL). Anyway, if Tampa Bay goes on the clock before I finish, just thought I would let you all know that I hope to be back by noon and will make my selection at that time. Hopefully by disclosing this the teams following Tampa will be advised that they will be on the clock at about that time.

I agree with you Parker, a second day QB selection would be fine with me, especially Dixon or Johnson.

Minnesota has many needs. DE - OL Depth - DT depth - QB to develop behind Jackson (current backup is Bollinger) - TE that can be a downfield threat for Jackson. After reading around the internet and checking out various mock drafts, it seems most feel Defensive end is the number one need for the Vikings. One site stated it this way: All three mocks I saw (NFL Draftcountdown, Footballsfuture, Draft Tek Simulation) had Minny selecting a DE in the first round, 2 having them select D Harvey & 1 P Merling. Some sites have Merling the #3 DE in the draft and Harvey #4. Some reverse the order. My understanding is many are thinking Merling may slip down the boards because he has had injury problems and this has kept him from working out for the scouts. Therefore I will select for the Minnesota Vikings with the 17th selection of the 2008 draft: Derrick Harvey DE Florida Next up: 18 Houston Texans - DabearsDabomb

Who would of thought we would ever see a Delaware Blue Hen QB rated #1 in the draft? I also would have liked to have seen him in a Bears Uniform but as you said it is a bit unlikely now.
-
I also would like to see a trade down in that situation however, sometimes you just can't find a trading partner.

Detroit has many needs from what I have read. Their OL sucks as bad as ours. Their yds per carry by RBs was the 2nd worst in the NFL last year. They have suffered with CB coverage ever since trading away Dre' Bly They have no effective pass rush and need a DE They have an OLB playing out of position at MLB and need a true Tampa 2 type of Mike They need a RB bad, having released Kevin Jones. If either of the top 3 RB prospects were still available I would definitely have selected one here. Unfortunately for the Lions none made it to their slot in the draft and none of the other backs would be a smart selection at 15. OL is deep and can be found in later rounds. DE & ILB are interesting prospects here but IMO the best value here is at CB. Very seldom do you get a chance to select a CB in the draft that is capable of starting as a rookie and make an impact. I feel that in this case, Detroit would be foolish to pass on a chance to resolve this area of need. Therefore with the 15th selection of the draft, Detroit selects: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB Tennessee St. 16 Arizona Cardinals - ParkerBear7 - you are on the clock......

If that is true, projected in the 4th, it means Angelo will consider him in the 3rd? Seems to be his M.O.
-
I could not fault the Bears for considering Ryan if he fell to us, I would however prefer not to risk a first round draft selection on a QB if possible, instead, a trade down or a selection of a top OLT would be my preference at 14.
-
Very interesting article. 90% success rate for first round OL selections over the last decade. Amazing statistic!

Yes, a bit disappointing. At this rate we will not finish round 1 by the 26th. I actually sent a PM to Prophet & Ashkum after the 1st pick was selected hoping we could knock off the 1st 4 picks fast. I saw Ashkum around a lot last night waiting for Prophet. Prophet never showed. I am sure he is tied up with other important matters. He is an excellent member of the forum and I have no doubt he would have been here if possible. That being said, not sure what we should do.

Has Urlacher been quoted by any source saying he was not attending the workouts because of his contract negotiations? I thought I read he refused to discuss the reasons for his not participating. Has it been quoted anywhere that he has addressed the team about his contract negotiations? I know he is negotiating a contract, he has friends on the team, I am sure some ask him how the negotiations are going, but that is not addressing the team with the issue. Has he gone public bitching and threatening a holdout. No. Aren't we jumping the gun and assuming because it is so commonplace for a player to hold himself out of workouts when they are in contract negotiations that this must be the reason for Urlacher as well? My guess, just coming off of neck surgery and having an arthritis issue with his lower back he felt the smart thing would do would be sit out workouts which quite frankly will not hurt his ability to play this year. It may help to get him to the first game of the year in Indianapolis in better condition to kick a**. Some veterans who are invaluable to the team should not, IMHO, should not be subject to any unnecessary risks.

LOL, I assure you I have had bigger bloopers to my credit....

Well, since no one else is stepping up, I took all the Bears divisional rivals, Tampa was at one time in our division before the reallignment, so I will take them. Now let's get this draft on the roll. By the way, as most know, Tuesday through Saturday I work very very long hours. I will do my best to stay on top of things and do not think I will be late with my picks, I will be set to select asap.

No problem. We should include a link to the site I took it from NFL Draft Countdown And I would also suggest giving a couple of links for team needs: Team Needs - NFL Draft Countdown Team Needs - FootballsFuture.com Team Needs - Draft.com This always helps speed things up.

Are we going to have a master list of players that will be updated as selections are made? I have run these types of drafts in the past and I took lists from a draft site with the top ?? players at each position and put them in a locked thread. Everytime a pick was made I noted it alongside the player on the list. When people selected, they could easily see which players were remaining to be selected and their ranking per the site used. It seemed to help a lot and speed things up.

Alright!! Thanks ConnorBear, now that leaves 3 to go DBDB took Houston & ConnorBear took Tennessee & San Diego - once the chart is updated the only teams left should be: Jacksonville Washington Tampa Bay Anyone want to step up to the podium??? LOL
-
Looking things over, excluding the Browns, we have 3 teams left Jacksonville Tennessee - ConnorBear San Diego - ConnorBear Washington Tampa Bay DBDB said he would take Houston and it has yet to re updated on the list - Connor just took TEN & SDC If I have it right: Balta 1 team ConnorBear 2 teams Pix 3 teams Parker 2 teams Fenom 2 teams Askum 2 teams DBDB 1 team Hester 3 teams NeoBear 2 teams Drunken 2 teams Mad 2 teams Brietch 2 teams Prophet 3 teams SoxFan 1 team By my count that makes 28 of the 31 teams for round 1 taken. 3 to go, we need to get this started - anyone else want to sign up?

I would miss posting on the forum, so that is a consideration as to my draft day plans. Great day to hang out on the board. I do know DBDB had plans to add a chat room for this TalkBears forum. Not sure when he plans to launch it.
-
I also would love to get together for some more games. Hopefully with a better outcome than last time we hooked up to see a game together

LOL, I LIVE in Rockford, but after this winter, I am not sure I LOVE it.
