With Anthony Gordon there are just enough good plays on tape to entice you to think maybe he can be an answer. In the game I watched, as the announcers kept talking about his draft status and NFL future, I saw a lot of plays and kept saying to myself...yeah, that's not gonna work. IMO he'll be on someone's practice squad next year but he's not worth spending a draft pick on. With limited picks I see no reason to draft him when we can use that pick to find someone with more potential at any other position.

I watched a game with this Anthony Gordon QB. From what I saw if we draft him his sole purpose will be to make Mitch Trubisky look like a good QB. I think it's a wash between Keenum and Daniel in terms of talent. I think Daniel comes cheaper since he won't be moving his family and he knows the system which gives him a big advantage over Keenum who won't get practice reps during the season.

Who did Eli Apple pay to be put at #50?

I say...what was his knee injury? Because it can easily take a full year to recover which means he won't be available, or won't be playing at full strength for much of the season. I also say I was never that impressed with him when he was in Arizona. Not that he was a bad player but I never thought he was worth the contract he got. But that's Free Agency. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/ravens-release-highly-paid-starting-safety-tony-jefferson-a-respected-on-and-off-field-leader-saving-247-million/ar-BB101e2R "But despite starting 35 of his first 37 games with the team, Jefferson struggled to make an impact in the Ravens’ pass defense. He finished with two interceptions and 11 passes defensed, and he had costly lapses in coverage over the first month of last season, when the Ravens defense was in disarray. He allowed a passer rating of 141.4 in 2019, according to Pro-Football-Reference, and his missed-tackle rate (16.0%) was among the team’s worst."

Your proposal on Leno is very realistic. It also means we can keep him and cut him during training camp.

I think I'm with you here. Hall of Fame type players change the game and improve those around them. Mack does that he just didn't have enough help last year once Hicks was out. OTOH the #2 pick gets you one of Burrow or Chase Young and (I'm guessing) about $20mil in cap space. That cap space could go even higher depending how the contract is structured. Assuming we are not going to win through Trubisky then we must do so with the Defense. We could then go out and sign Ngakoue or Chris Jones. So the trade question is would I prefer Floyd/Nichols/Hicks/Mack or one of: Floyd/Jones/Hicks/Young Young/Nichols/Hicks/Ngakoue After all the money the Bears spent on Mack I'd be shocked if ownership would let Pace shell out another huge guarantee. I have to say I'd make the trade and take the Chris Jones/Akiem Hicks interior with Chase Young on the outside. Inside pressure is brutal on passing and running plays. It negates the worry about Floyd's lack of sacks (he can get pressures) or it also forces QBs into Floyd's direction where he'll be in position to contain the play. You have Young on the other edge too. The gamble is that all this has to happen before FA and you don't know if you can sign any of the top FAs. This opens some wild opportunities but I prefer the bird in the hand and would stick with Mack.

Had that thought for much of last year because in 2018 he used to occasionally pancake OTs. That just disappeared from his game. I realize teams did a lot to isolate him away from the action but his effort didn't appear to be the same.

Brady won't go anywhere that doesn't have a good Oline. I also agree on the Floyd trade possibility although it's slight. It would have to be to a team that viewed him as a long term 1st/2nd down player and that wanted to sign him to a deal representative of that role. That could just as easily be us.

I think you are spot on with Holtz and Horsted being our 3rd and 4th TEs... say bye to Braunecker and Shaheen. I'm not sure we'll go with a TE in the draft even if I've been saying that for some time. At least not early because I think the position is too important to Nagy's offense that Pace will go out and fix it via FA with one of the top 3. Hooper would get the most guaranteed money. The others would be a little more team friendly/less guarantee. Once he settled into the offense in 2018 Trubisky looked ok when he had Burton on the field. If we want to fix the QB...get him a big friendly target. Otherwise a rookie takes too much time to learn the transition. Use that 2nd Rd pick on a fast WR to take the top off the D and to open up the underneath stuff for that TE we just spent money on. If we end up with Ebron then maybe we take a chance on a TE in the 4th/5th Rd.

Yes and Carson Wentz almost had a league MVP award before he faded back to the point some fans were calling for Foles again. QB is tough position in the NFL and when a team is firing on all cylinders it's the QB who often gets the credit. I like to see how players respond under less than ideal conditions. Mitch has not responded well but it could change. The likelihood of that is up for debate even if many consider it case closed. Watson has had a lot of ups and downs and his playoff performance was far from inspiring. I saw nothing in that one game I watched that would make me want him over Mitch, albeit was just one game. Mahomes is the one of the 3 who is really playing lights out on a first rate offense and even he struggled a lot against a good pass rush even with elite talent at TE and WR.

OT and fast WR is cool. I still like that WR from TCU Jalen Reagor. He's built better for the NFL, speed seems similar to Hamler and he's better going up high for the ball which will pay dividends in the red zone. Hamler is fast but he's not really pulling away from a lot of players so he's similar to Gabriel in that a mis-step by a DB and he's open but many NFL DBs will run stride for stride with him. Unless he runs a 4.3 forty I expect Hamler's stock (likely a 4.4 IMO) to drop as we get closer to the draft.

Mitch had some good games last year and still fans ragged on him for missing a pass here or there. I don't really have time to go back and dig up quotes. Mitch does not play as well as Mahomes that's a fact. But in that last game when under pressure Mahomes looked an awful lot like Mitch has.

You can really protect your WR if you throw the ball to the LB in front of him.

Thanks for the schedule. Now I just need to put together my shopping list.

If Trubisky played exactly like Mahomes did in that game Bears fans would still want to cut him. That's the Mahomes I saw in college when he was under pressure and I was surprised to see him that rattled by the SF pass rush. Imagine him behind the Bears Oline. Many of his passes were off target (deep passes as you mentioned) imagine our fan base who complained about Trubisky pass that was 6" too short of being in stride. JimmyG was even worse under pressure constantly throwing off his back foot. With a clean pocket he looks good, even on those little screen passes they threw a lot of. He was inaccurate often when he had a clean pocket or his team would have won the game. He had several opportunities for big plays if he led his receiver correctly. We need to fix Trubisky and get his head on straight and get a running game. I like what Nagy did bringing in Flip and Lazor to help here and moving Rags behind the scenes as passing game coordinator. He could have cut Rags for all I cared but it has been clear Rags is not getting through to Trubisky. Gotta throw a different pitch and see if it works. After posting a possible off-season earlier where I cut Floyd I'm really starting to think signing a big FA pass rusher and cutting Floyd (if he won't sign a very reasonable extension) is definitely the way to go here. You just have to have pass rushers at all times and that was clear by the way SF rattled Mahomes. We're not going to win because of Mitch but we can win with him if we have the right defense (which is very close to elite) and a running game. I'm going to start building my offseason wish list. Last...I'm really glad Andy Reid finally has his Superbowl win. Loved watching his emotions as he closed out a career long goal.

Not even close to that...and that's a good thing. While there were a rumored 10 teams interested in this guy the market just simply wasn't that high for a CFL CB who is going to be 28. For this pocket change I'm ok with the deal. https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1223229520666398720 Follow-up details on Tre Roberson’s two-year deal with the Bears: $75K signing bonus, $50K Week 1 roster bonus in 2020, $25K workout bonus each year. Base salaries of $550K, $610K. Good developmental prospect for Chicago to work with.

Can't....stop.....laughing.

Of course he has a chance but he's also going to be 28 and he's still learning a new position, now at the NFL level. There's not a lot of runway left in his career. If he were 24 then a year or two as a backup/special teams player might get him where he needs to be.
-
I'd be ok with both of those picks except I really prefer we grab an OT in Rd 2. IMO TE is a position we can fix via FA and one of the top 3 FAs will be here. We could possibly add depth along the interior; depending on how people feel about Bars and if he can be RG or RT. OLB with Lewis there represents good value depending on his injury prognosis but without the injury he's clearly a top 20 or top 15 talent. Pass rusher is a premium position so we absolutely take Lewis there. Then with the next pick we draft an OT because you don't find many drafts where this much OT talent goes this deep into Rd 2. In the 4th Rd go get Joe Reed WR out of Virginia.
-
I'll predict right now David Montgomery is going to pancake him the first time he tries to tackle him in camp. I have low expectations for anyone coming from the CFL because the athleticism alone is such a big jump. However, Tre appears to have the athletic talent to play in the NFL as he reportedly ran a 4.52 forty and some of his highlights show some good quickness. Maybe he can win a roster spot as the last CB but I don't expect much more from him.

This site gives you an A+ for drafting a 3rd Rd talent in the 3rd round?

I feel better about the potential of the practice squad players we already have: Horsted, Holtz, Dax Raymond, , and even Darion Clark. Clark was a basketball player the Bears are trying to convert. For those who played basketball he has more natural strength and balance, and quicker feet than Shaheen. He can't jump very well but his spin move at the 2:50 mark would put Shaheen on the floor if he tried it. He's also a more natural runner than Shaheen which you can see when he gets out on the fast break. In the highlights he has natural hands for catching the ball in traffic as seen on several quick inside passes. Of course it's not always easy to translate that to a football. You never know how a transition to a new sport goes but all I'm saying is from an athletic standpoint Clark is the better inline TE prospect over Trautman. I will keep telling myself that Trautman is nothing more than a smoke screen and hope that's true on draft day. https://thespringleague.com/?p=3873 On TE Darion Clark (6’6″, 240 lbs, USC): “Clark was one of the more interesting prospects we had in this years camp. A former basketball player at USC who has decided to make the transition to football, Darion showed great deal of potential. He possesses elite size, speed and athletic ability needed to become a force at the next level. Most impressive, Clark showed that he is a fast learner who under the right coaching can be a great asset to any squad that’ll take the time to work with him. Reliable hands, strong base, good hip flexibility and good acceleration. Clark is someone to keep an eye on as he develops. We’re excited to see what the future holds for this talented TE prospect.”
