That was crap. Nagy outsmarted himself in the preseason and his offense just wasn't ready for this at all. One more thing is clear: If he does not have a good U TE on the field his offense doesn't function. That goes back to when he was with KC in the playoffs and he lost Kelce in the 2nd half, Burton out against the Eagles and here again tonight. After he was hired and he was on the flight to Chicago with Pace he told him how important that position was to his offense. He wasn't joking. If he's a good coach he'll find a way around this problem. On a positive note we have a really good defense even if there were a few calls in secondary that looked like players didn't know their responsibilities. That'll get fixed within a few games. Roquan Smith is elite. The energy he played with and hit with were really fun to watch. I don't know if we'll have RRH next season but if not we're going to wish we did. Floyd with a bull rush sack and he was in/around several other pressures too. Cody Whitehair didn't play well at the end and really killed the last drive all by himself. Charles Leno killed one earlier in the 4th quarter all by himself. Whitehair is about to be a new father which reportedly will happen any day. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he had family on his mind. Really the Oline as a whole looked out of sync too often. Did Javon Wims have more snaps than Miller? I never saw Miller until the last few minutes of the game. Trubisky looked lost most of the game. We see this every year in the first week or two of the season where teams play really poorly. Good teams fix it. No need to panic yet but of course we will.

He helped us win 12 games last year and has missed just a single game for which he needed surgery. He was 10th in receptions among TEs and 4th in TDs last year and fans want to get rid of him. http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=1&season=2018&seasonType=REG&d-447263-n=1&experience=&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-p=1&conference=null&statisticPositionCategory=TIGHT_END&d-447263-s=RECEIVING_TOUCHDOWNS

Bray apparently was a week or two shy of hitting the PS limit so he remained eligible.
-
Me too. Perhaps MIzzell was a quick study on the playbook which may have made him good for scout team work but he simply lacks the physical skills needed to compete in the NFL. Depending on what you think of Bray there are 4 to 7 players there that have potential to develop into depth players for us. That's about all you can ask for on the PS. Jesper has the hands, can he run and block at TE weight? https://www.nfldraftdiamonds.com/2018/11/jesper-horsted/
-
Neither did anything for me. Vaughters only looks good when he's not blocked. in the future when he's stronger Duck might hang on with a team that runs a lot of cover 2 or zone but I don't think that's us under Pagano. He has neither the speed nor size to matchup with NFL WRs. In terms of quickness he's not close to what Duke Shelley can do on the field.

I'm just gonna throw this out there but I'd love to see Vedvik signed to our practice squad. I'm not so sure it would help Piniero with his confidence but it would help me with my confidence. Others I'd like to see added: 2) Horsted 3) Bunting 4) Fitts...see if he can finally work his way into shape. At some point you'd think the embarrassment of being pushed all over the field by TEs week after week would motivate a guy. OTOH it might not be hard to find a better PS candidate at OLB than Fitts. 5) Nall...keep the clydesdale in the stable just in case. 6) Michael Joseph...he's improved a lot over last year but still has a ways to go to be NFL ready. 7) John Franklin III...he too has improved a lot over last year unfortunately he has an even longer way to go to be NFL ready. 8) Bars....of course 9) Denmark...athletic stud who did nothing this preseason. If it's a choice between him and Franklin III, keep Denmark. Franklin looks a bit soft in his game and if nothing else we know Denmark will hit somebody. 10) Anyone not named Mizzell

I think the Daniels/Whitehair position swap will pay solid dividends this year too. Kyle Long has had an entire offseason to workout and is looking more like his pre-injury days. You didn't list Wims who looks like a legit depth this year. WR depth is solid especially when you consider Cohen spends a lot of time as a slot WR. I'd say Wims replaces Kevin White while Patterson was brought in to be the one to split time with Cohen. IMO giving Cohen less reps means he'll be running more deep routes at least I hope so because he's tough to stay with in his cuts.

Two players I don't get are Whyte who did almost nothing as a RB all preseason and Lucas who did nothing as a blocker. I'm a fan of Nall and felt he could provide a little as a h-back type but we never really saw him do much blocking in the preseason so I get cutting him and likely moving him to the PS. We've already got Patterson as KR and part-time RB so what is Whyte going to do? As an interior OG Bars outplayed Lucas but at OT it might be a simple case of short-term depth needed while Coward heals from his elbow injury. Lucas' experience might make him the better short-term option. Then there is the decision to keep 6 ILBs. Either we love them as special teams players or there is a trade being cooked up swapping one ILB for an OLB. Congratulations are on order for Nick Williams and Abdullah Anderson who have both worked their way into being solid depth players for us.
-
It's all about the blocking (or lack thereof) for these two. We should have one or both on the PS and give them another year to work on their strength and technique.
-
Nick Williams played really well and his athleticism surprised me. He has some real versatility across the defensive front.
-
I think we'll add Jesper Horsted too. That's two TEs that have some promise for roster depth down the road.
-
After hearing the Colts are bringing in Brock Osweiller I presume at their first home game the Colts will have signs around the stadium: Got no Luck? Counselors are available.
-
Have you watched all the highlights of Sowell missing blocks? Even Nagy has admitted he's struggling with the position change.
-
Miller plays through injuries... Kevin White no so much.
-
Nagy wants a good blocking TE and at least in that aspect Shaheen is ok. He's better than what we've seen from Sowell this preseason and he also has good hands which makes him a strong redzone threat. He's just not nimble enough to really threaten a lot of the field. There is no benefit I can see to cut him unless they suddenly find a better replacement through the waiver wire. That's not likely at this time of year. https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears/2019/8/27/20835754/bears-adam-shaheen-tight-end-eager-to-prove-himself “I look at the glass [as] half-full, and I always try to give everybody the benefit of the doubt,” Nagy said. “From what I’ve seen in practice, where he’s at, I feel like he’s in a good spot. I don’t feel like we’re in a spot where we have to worry that he can’t help us.”
-
I see no reason to keep Whyte on the roster. He hasn't done anything IMO. He runs with little vision, little wiggle, and little power. I definitely want to see him on the practice squad because next year he might be in a place to take Patterson's spot as KR, part-time RB, part-time WR. Although watching him run into the back of his blockers over and over makes me doubtful that will change next year. I'd put Bunting on the 53 ahead of Braunecker. He has shown enough for me to think he can become a primary backup for Trey Burton, something Braunecker will never be able to do (that was obvious in the Eagles game last year). No other TE on the roster has shown anything close to what Burton and Bunting can do on intermediate routes down the field. I think Sowell makes it just because he's a coaches project, two he has the proven work ethic to know he's likely to improve, and lastly Shaheen is no sure thing and there's no other good blocking TE on the roster. Sowell hasn't been good at blocking but see that previous sentence about his work ethic. I can't figure out anything at ILB behind the starters. Kwit finally showed up last game like a man fighting for a job, and it was a welcome sight. I suspect that's enough (along with Iggy not doing well) for him to stick. Iggy I think is headed to the PS. He has one fatal flaw for an ILB: he doesn't like head on contact. He's always trying to tackle from the side and that softness ends up with him often appearing out of position. He's been ok in coverage but so has Josh Woods. Woods has really started to shine the more snaps he gets and he's shown some aggressiveness making tackles which I think bodes well for his future. I"m taking Woods over Iggy. With the lack of talent at OLB I could see us keeping 5 ILBs for special teams purposes. In that case I can see KPL making the 53. He's shown good hustle and speed despite some bad coverage lapses. That spot could also go to Braunecker.
-
I still think Nall makes the 53. He appears to be getting every chance to be one of the core special teams players because he's out there early in each game. Plus tonight when it was Whyte's series in the first quarter Nall was inserted on a 3rd and long. either that's a breather for Whyte or the coaches have more trust in Nall in passing situations. FWIW Bunting appears to be in a similar situation and getting the same opportunities as he tries to earn one of the last 3 spots on the roster. I like his chances too over Braunecker.

Best thing I saw on Reddit was fans calling him "Pineirsky".
-
Back in 1985 QBs didn't want to play against us. In 2019 they prefer to just retire. He is going to be sought after for years to come every offseason.
-
Yes, that desire to bring in Clowney makes little sense to me. We have a young roster that is going to need two things in the near future: First some significant contract extensions for key players and second some good n' cheap draft picks to help fill out the roster depth. Meaning we need a few young players in next years draft to start filling in for starters. Some of those might be on the roster (perhaps Tolliver for Prince) but others like Trevathan's replacement are not. Spending a lot of money on Clowney and his injury history, even if it's for one year, and giving up draft picks to do it makes no sense to me. It is still possible the Bears and Trevathan agree on a 1yr extension, possibly 2yr. That would only happen if Trevathan really wants to stay here which means a below market deal. He's just young enough at 30 that he might get one more big deal for 2-3yr especially if he plays well being surrounded by all this talent. Kyle Long looks like Kyle Long of old. Why would we give up a key piece protecting Trubisky when we are in a Superbowl window and there is no viable backup on the roster right now? Bars might be his replacement next year but he does not look ready now.

We had some debate about this over the offseason. I felt at the time since we were seeing Mizzell take snaps away from Cohen even in the playoff game that coaches felt he was maxed out. Looks like they want to pare things down even more from what he did last year. This might explain why we went after Patterson which I don't think anyone was expecting. At least I wasn't expecting us to have interest in him and certainly not at $5mil/yr. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/21/matt-nagy-we-gave-tarik-cohen-a-little-bit-too-much-at-times-last-season/

The Bears reportedly converted $7mil of Charles Leno's salary this year into a signing bonus. That gives us an extra $5.3mil in cap space this year. We will have to wait and see what Pace does with this. The Whitehair extension has been rumored all offseason but we could have done that without this extra cap space. https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1164179053223567364

Not much changed for me after watching the 2nd game although Kwit was back to his usual self in run support but remained his usual self in pass coverage. Nobody else really stepped up at ILB so that might be helping Kwit's cause. Whatever workouts Kylie Fitts was doing have seemingly cost him all of his lateral movement quickness. He has enough strength to hold the edge and unfortunately that's about all he does even in pass rush mode. Irving hasn't impressed me at all, and to be fair he didn't impress me much last year either. Like Fitts he is more or less a straight line player with little bend to his game. I can see Pace keeping an eye on cuts to find some OLB help but decent edge talent rarely hits the market at this time. Game 3 will tell us who the likely bottom roster guys are. Will Nall get the start at RB or will it be Whyte?

Kicker Battle - Elliott Fry waived, Pineiro's job to lose
AZ54 replied to Connorbear's topic in Bearstalk
For all the team has done to find a kicker I don't think (within reason) that compensation would be the deciding factor. In fact we kept the kicker who will likely cost us a 7th Rd pick. If they were even we could have kept Fry and our 7th Rd pick. I say within reason because we weren't giving up a 4th Rd pick for a kicker. That's where we've draft Eddie Jackson, Cohen, and now Ridley so there is too much value there. It seems to me the kicking coach has been able to work with Pineiro and improve his consistency. While Fry might have been the more accurate kicker in the near term I think they were close enough, and with Pineiro improving, that they went with the upside. Given the cold weather conditions he'll be kicking in that is where the stronger leg matters because the ball won't travel as far. Add in the fact that there won't be any kick returns to deal with.
