    UDFA Thread

I looked into a few of these UDFAs. The ones who stood out to me are Norwood WR/KR, Callaghan CB, Vogler TE, and Meredith WR. Norwood seems to have more play speed than his 4.6 forty indicates. He certainly left a lot of guys behind him on the highlights. Meredith has great hands and I love the way he goes after the ball. His play speed seems slower than the supposed 4.5 forty he runs. I can't see him breaking away from NFL DBs. Vogler seems like he has the potential to develop into a 3rd option as a TE. Callahan has the speed to cover and the natural ball instincts you want to see in a CB. He's not very big but might develop into a NB.
  2. I would be surprised if they did that because Jimmie Ward 5'11" 195lbs and was very quick in coverage. That quickness is needed in the slot position. Watch highlights of Amos and he's not that quick changing directions. Amos is a very good athlete but he's not at the same level quickness as Jimmie Ward. OTOH he has enough coverage ability and the size/strength to handle TEs. If we choose to have him play centerfield he has enough speed to cover the deep routes, and enough punch to make players remember he's there waiting for them. It doesn't hurt that Amos has a background as a CB and if we're in a bind with injuries having that flexibility isn't a bad thing. I just don't think we should make this his main focus.
  3. I read that article from SBnation. The character of this kid is really good. Initially I thought a kid who changes around from school to school, in and out of football, doesn't really have the dedication needed to succeed at the professional level. After reading his story and how he worked to take care of his sister and the struggles he's had with no parents around since high school he's done very well for himself. For all that he has gone through in his life he never got on the wrong path. He's had little experience on the field and little coaching so there's plenty of upside on his technique and I think he will put in the work now that he has the opportunity to focus on nothing but football. I watched the sole video of him on draftbreakdown.com. He's a beast with tremendous power if he can just learn to stay lower he'll be moving people all over the field. In that one game against Oklahoma the DEs coming up against him just quit trying to get through or around him. He might need a year to put it together but he could very well be our starting RT for years to come.
  4. I hope they don't play Amos at NB. Keep him at FS and let him learn how to play it well.
  5. I can't remember how much cap space we freed up when we traded Marshall but when you evaluate that deal you will have to include McPhee, or Rolle, along with White's contributions minus whatever player we could have had in the 7th Rd and/or the idea of having Marshall and Vic Beasley (since we could have also drafted another position. I think we'll come out ahead.
  6. I saw the subject line and first though, without even looking, is this has to be from Jason. When we go across the board I'd say that you are correct. Not a lot of sizzle in this draft but I like all of the picks until we got to 6th Rd. But at that point it's whatever. I don't dislike Fabuluje per se but when a guy moves around from one place to another throughout college it's a red flag to me that he might not have the work ethic needed to take advantage of his talent. He gets to prove me wrong. From what I see Goldman looks like a twin of Ferguson at the LOS. I don't mind seeing them side by side on 1st and 2nd downs. They will almost always command 3 blockers between them on running plays. Never more than two on passing plays though. I do like the RB pick. I was calling for it for weeks, 2 years really, especially the need for speed. I liked Carey coming out of UofA but he needs to do more to impress me this preseason. I still think he'll be a good backup RB for us and hopefully the transition to a more run oriented offense will benefit him.

    6th Round Pick

Do we move him inside? His skills at OT seem raw but that kind of power inside is a good fit and he can work in his technique without as much risk.

    5th round pick

I like Amos and finding him in the 5th seems like good value. Kid needs some coaching and time to develop but has the traits you look for in a FS. Despite his size he's not that physical in the box but he's productive. CBS had him as 2nd best FS prospect in the draft behind Randall who the Packers took in Rd 1. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players...909/adrian-amos Against Ohio State… http://draftbreakdown.com/video/adrian-amo...hio-state-2014/
  9. First of all he has the long speed we haven't had out of the backfield in some time and I think that's a welcome addition. The way he runs reminds me of a 9/10ths version of Tevin Coleman. Not quite as fast, not quite as much elusiveness in the open field, not much power, but like Forte he's versatile and can play split out as a WR.

    GM ability

Easy to go BPA when there are needs at every spot on the field. We'll see how this works down the road.
  11. Collins can't go into the draft next year. If he chooses not to play this year (or if he can't) then he'll have to be a UDFA. In this case a 4th Rd contract is a whole lot better than being a UDFA.

    anybody Thinking. ...

Please no Bryce Petty until we get to UDFA signings.
  13. I like this pick. If nothing else running against a front of Ferguson, Goldman, McDonald/Ratliff is not going to be easy for any team. ILB will have plenty of room to roam and make plays.
  14. I need to add there was a bonus in the 1st Rd when the Packers took Damarious Randall. Back to back FS in Rd 1? Kid went from a 3rd Rd grade to Rd 1 ahead of Collins all while there was no football being played. Rumor is they plan to convert him to a CB but despite what I've read and heard about Randall, I haven't seen him be a physical player and he won't match up against Kevin White. To me, what GB did was just like what we've seen from the Bears in the draft in years past.
  15. Among the choices there I prefer to fix the Dline. I'd even take an OT/OG over Harold.
  16. I'm very happy with Kevin White. Kid had a blue chip grade, or higher depending on where you look, and that's what you want out of a top 10 pick. http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0ap30000004...s-and-red-chips I said weeks ago I preferred him over Cooper. I think Cooper is the better WR right now and I had pretty much accepted that we'd get Cooper (not that he'd have been a bad choice at all). White is by far the better run blocker among the two IMO and I think White's upside as a WR is higher because of the way he goes up after the ball on contested throws, which leads to preferring him over Cooper as a red zone target. Either of these WRs would have added the speed element we needed in our WR corps.
  17. To borrow a phrase….make it so.
  18. Rd 1 #7 Amari Cooper I think some other team bites on the hype surrounding Kevin White and takes him ahead of Cooper. I'm not sure we'll be able to trade back. There usually aren't that many teams willing to pay the price to get into the top 7. I think the Redskins, and to a lesser extent the Jets, are desperate for more picks and will accept a lower offer than we will. I've already said I want a blue chip player out of this draft so trading all the way back to the late teens to take someone like Landon Collins is not my preference. I think the trade targets for teams trying to get into the top 7 are Beasley or Fowler. With Shane Ray and Randy Gregory going stupid before the draft the urgency to get one of the elite pass rushers is heightened. I don't put Bud Dupree in the same category as those guys and teams know we need a fast edge rusher. If Cooper is not available I think we take Beasley. If we trade back a few picks to around #10 the targets are Danny Shelton or Trae Waynes. If we trade back to middle of the 1st or later I start thinking Jerry Angelo is still running the show.
  19. It will take more than we can afford to give up. We need to reload the roster at almost every position and if anything we could use more picks. However, this league is driven by stars and you have the best odds at finding them in the top half of the draft so I don't want to drop back more than a few spots. Any deal beyond that I wouldn't accept.
  20. I don't want to trade Bennett but I think the new regime is not accepting his sitting out demanding a new contract. So they are sending him a message: We'll shop you around and see if anyone else wants to pay you and us in a trade. It is a way of demonstrating his value. Bennett is not a player another team has to game plan around and never will be. One deal I would take is Wilkerson (Jets DT) in exchange for Bennett and yes we'd have to pay Wilkerson but he'd be an anchor on our Dline from day 1.
  21. Even if he does play well in the new scheme there is nothing in his performance that would earn him a contract as high as his 5th year option. This is a no-brainer decision.
  22. Entering the league already on the substance abuse program means another violation and he immediately starts missing games. That's not the risk you want to take at #7 and by the time you get to Rd 2 the contract and guaranteed money makes the risk-reward calculation more in the team's favor.
  23. Wow another million dollar puff of smoke. Dumb or really arrogant thinking he can or will get away with it. I personally don't think marijuana is a big deal but I've been around it enough to know it does affect motivation. That aside, it's the decision to do this at the start of such a lucrative professional career that really makes me question a guy's judgment and not just on this issue.
  24. Just saying how I feel after watching a couple games of Dupree. He seems a little less mobile laterally than guys like Beasley, Gregory, or Ray.

    What if

If we were going to reach for an Oline player this early it makes more sense to reach for Flowers who plays the position we need most (OT) as opposed to drafting a player who most likely will be an OG. Flowers was chosen at 9 by the Giants in this draft and has the athletic ability to develop into a starting LT down the road. LT might be a stretch for him but he should at least end up a very good RT. Same goes for Andrus Peat who has questions about his tenacity but he has all the physical tools needed to play LT. Either of those guys' size and strength next to Long make the right side of our line as dominant as it would be with Scherff/Long combination and we wouldn't have to make a position switch for Long which I prefer. That aside, I prefer to go elsewhere if the top 2 WR are both gone. I'd take in no particular order: Trae Waynes paired with Fuller in man coverage would make our safety issues less of a problem and free up the front 7 to rush the passer Danny Shelton to anchor the Dline up the middle (more of a need than OG) Beasley or Shane Ray (whoever they have rated higher) speed off the edge unlike anyone we have on the roster. I prefer Shane Ray the way he plays to the whistle. Devante Parker would be a nice addition too but he's not in the same class as Cooper or White IMO, and I don't think the drop off in talent after him is that significant in Rd 2. His run-after-the-catch ability is outstanding.
