It's a slow time of the year
-
He really wasn't using a committee last year. Players kept getting hurt and another guy stepped up. Ball got hurt, then Hillman got a majority of the carries until he got hurt. Then CJ Anderson came in and dominated. He didn't lose many, if any carries as the others got healthy.
-
Why would it matter if a player helped this year? It's not like the Bears are likely to be playoff bound.
-
I honestly would give up extra picks to get him. I think he has a chance at being something special in the league. Plus, there is no way this trade is offered. The deal would likely be closer to the Browns 12th and 43rd for the Bears 7th. If the Browns were giving up both 1sts, one of the teams not wanting a QB would have pulled the trigger before the offer got to the Bears. According to the Value chart, the 12th and 19th are valued just 125 lower than the 3rd pick.

Edit: took me a second to figure out the whole youtube thing again

He was always something to look forward to during a win or loss. He seemed like a genuine great guy with a lot of passion for Bears football.

I completely disagree with the line of thinking that QB's are more mistakes than hits. The simple fact is, if you want a QB, it's going to have to be in the draft even if it is the most failed position. There is usually 10-15 QBs drafted a year and maybe one or 2 will be successful. That said, it's more likely that it will be a first round pick that turns out. That's why I said I think it's important to go big or go low. The mid round QB picks are even more likely to not pan out. There is no reason to waste a pick on one, so draft one of the top QBs in the first round or just draft really late and hope something pans out. Players late won't likely make the team anyways. It's ok to not want Mariotta or Winston if you don't think they will turn out. I just disagree with the notion of avoiding a QB high just because other failures. I myself don't think Winston will turn out. I think Mariotta has a lot of the things you want from a QB on and off the field.
-
I understand if you don't like the QB's available, I just can't see a better QB prospect being there next year if the bears go 8-8 or 9-7 and draft at 20. QB is just such an important position to hit on, it's worth wasting the extra picks. If you have to throw in 2 more, and get decent players, the sum of those and a star at the 7th pick won't equal a franchise QB if he turns out.
-
You have to go big on QB, or go low and wish for the best. Someone like Petty is just wasting a pick. Mariotta may turn out to be a waste, but I'm sure we all hope the bears won't be drafting this low again. It's their once chance to get someone with that much potential. I really hope they try to make a play to get him.

Winston's high number of turnovers last year combined with his issues in his private life make me think he will fail in the NFL. The QB's who usually turn out best usually have very high character. I really hope that Smith sticks with drafting Winston and the Bears find a way to acquire Mariota. If he does fall, I don't want to see a trade down, as the Bears need impact players and haven't drafted this low in 10 years.

The Bears have to be shopping more picks, if any of the trade rumors are true. On the value chart that came up first, the third pick has a value of 2200 and the 7th one of 1500. That leaves 700 left, or the value of the 26th pick. Forte is just not worth that at age 29 and his contract. The Cutler to the Titans rumor would have been the 2600 for the Titans number two overall, with the Bear 7th pick being worth 1500. That leaves 1100 or the value of the 14th pick overall. Once again, well above Cutler's value. If there are any truth to either rumor, it's quite possible that next years first or another high pick this year are included in these deals. http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

Yea, the lack of loyalty is a problem, but that's not why I am down on Pace at the moment. Tillman's injuries haven't been leg related, he just reinjured the place on his arm he had surgery on the year before. They have been signing relatively old players so age isn't a factor. Tillman's loss isn't only a loss of one of the top corners in the league imho, but leaves yet another hole in the secondary. I can understand moving away from Briggs. I thought hitching their wagon to Cutler like previous regimes was a bad idea, as was giving away one of the top WR's in the league. It created an unneeded hole on an already porous team. I wasn't big on the huge contract they gave to a nonstarter or paying Royal the kind of money he received. Given Pace's experience is on the pro side, I expected a more inspired free agency. Now he faces what may be his weakness the draft. Ultimately, his drafts will define if he was better or worse than Emery and Angelo. The coaching staff assembled was amazing, but that's been about the only thing I'm excited about he's done.
-
Big loss for the team and the city. I think he still has it. Pace is heading towards Emery/Angelo territory on how I think of him. Hopefully he can draft better than them and prove me wrong.

If he is lucky, he will become a Kyle Orton. I want better for my team.

Bleacher Report: Bears looking to move up for Mariotta
'TD' replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
Their support of Cutler may be the smoke screen instead. I think that is highly unlikely though, I just can't see Cutler having the value of the 14th over all to move up. I'm sure Pace knows his market value, as their had to be some inquiries and offers. I can't see him turning down anything close to that value, yet alone gambling by turning down something that valuable in hopes of a trade with the Titans. If they were saying the Bears 7th over all, a first next year, and Cutler then I would believe it. I wish it was true, just not very likely. Edit: or a trade with Washington, not involving Cutler would be believable. -
Granted, Devin is a bit of a stretch. I just used him as an example, as we are all familiar with him. At one point, people thought he had all of the physical gifts to be the next Steve Smith. It could be argued that Hester just makes mental mistakes like lining up wrong (reading defenses), poor route running (bad mechanics), inexplicable drops (errant throws), and so on that kept him from becoming Steve Smith. I'm sure it's things that he understood, but when it came to execution it just wasn't there. That's just a broad comparison of why I think it's not just as simple mental fix for Jay. Of course we hope it is just that simple, but it's quite the large task. That's why I was saying it can't really be compared to changes we make in life.
-
I'd equate it to making Devon Hester a number one WR at this point of his career. He has all the talent to be a top WR in the league and we have seen him use those skills at times.
-
I'm sorry, but the changes you have in life do not apply here. You may be able to work on your golf swing, but you'll never reach an elite level that only the top players of the world can reach in an offseason or 2, even if you had all the tools. You're talking about changing a persons mechanics, mindset, vision, and decision making to from seriously flawed to top in the world in little time. It's just impossible, imho. There has been ways to mask this as in McCown and Gannon with Trestman. He had a system that did all the work if followed and it covered up many of their problems. That was just a mask and one that Cutler didn't want to wear. Cutler has never been considered lazy or a poor student in the offseason. From every report, he has worked hard each year and even looked like a different player in practice than you see on the field every Sunday. IMHO, he is just so fundamentally flawed at his core, that his instincts take over in the heat of the moment, and it can never be fixed. I don't understand the reasoning of why Gase and Fox would be able to change what many before him have tried and never been to accomplish, especially at this stage of his career.
-
You expect a 32 year old QB to be fixed?
-
Not to sound like a fan of Emery, but I disagree. What players did he try to sign that was to win free agency? Players like Slauson and Young were cheap players that is part of the lots of good foot ball moves. While signings like Bennett and Bushrod filled major needs while being paid mid tiered for their positons. He was left in cap hell from Angelo, and navigated it while adding players, and the Bears had their most cap space in years this year. I think Emery's approach to the offseason was spot on, while his talent evaluation was piss poor.
-
He said he had a dream of being a tackle in one interview or he dreamed of being a tackle, been a while and I forget the wording.
-
I am sorry but no. Jeffry isnt close to the level of Thomas, and Royal isnt in the same neighborhood as Sanders. He never has been close in his career to what Sanders did last year. Plus, they dont have Peyton Manning throwing to them. They had a guy that missed a game, threw more passes to a RB ever, and still lead the league in turn overs.

He looked very crisp int he game against the Lions. I think in the right scenario he could push a starter. Its just not going to happen in Chicago with a QB with that salary ahead of him, or for a coach he got fired. Im not saying he looked grat, but I didnt see muchin his performance to say he cant be much better.
