  1. Isn't Levi Jones the guy who got punched out by Joey Porter? I guess injuries aside his behavior is too bizarre for the Bengals. I wouls really do my homework on this guy before I added him to the mix.

  2. IMHO, this was a good, and solid offseason, for Detroit.

I would say they did well not to go after the big ticket difference makers. I don't care what they did this offseason. After going 0-16, and considered the number of changes at both staff and player levels, there is simply no way this was going to be a team that could compete this year. They should have, and did, look more toward the future.

The list of players added may not make them a great defense, but it sure as heck upgrades the D, is something which may be built upon in the next few years. Ditto on the offense.

Detroit is not a team I worry about this year, but if Stafford develops into a legit QB, they could become a "player" in the next few years. Frankly, that is fine w/ me. I am all for the division looking good, so long as we are on top :)

Nfo the Dolphins just pulled the trick this pass season with new everything also and who were their receivers going into the season Ted Ginn and some guys I can't name.Ronny Brown was coming off injury and Chad Pennington was similar to Culpepper in he had a lot to prove. Plusthe main factor is that the Bears always have played someclose games against Detroit no matter what the records are.

  3. Too new for everything this season. Maybe if we see something this year, we may be more concerned next. But it's hard for a team to change their legacy around overnight...regardless of what new coach and players are brought in.

How new were the Miami Dolphins to their new schemes? 1-15 to the playoffs. Don't underestimate what the right coach could do in a bad situation.

  4. Locally here they were singing the praises of Northwestern's former players CJ Bascher and WR Eric Peterman ( who might have an outside chance because he is a good special teams player). Both these guys are longshots and Bascher is an ultra longshot.

  5. He was closer. Pegues measured in at 5'9-5/8" 199 at the combine.

I liked him during the season all the way until Senior Bowl week. During the season, you could always tell he had some size issues but still always looked quick to the play in CF, but he was just brutal SB week. That was when I completely sold all the stock I had in him. He looked small and played small, looked slow and played slow. Got manhandled in every 1-1 drill, and couldn't keep up with any real speed either. Even playing CF and off man coverage left a lot to be desired, with him showing poor range and no ability to close. I hope he can turn out well and overcome his size and athletic issues, but I wouldn't be putting any money on it.

I watched him that week and if I'm not mistaken they were playing him one on one in press drills on outside routes. He was completely over matched. But our scheme can hide some players that are challenged in man coverage and the description of a centerfield type is kind of what the Bears are looking for. They have been searching for this type for years.

  6. Reports out of the minicamp were that Louis was not as fast and quick while playing that the numbers would indicate. He ran at left guard and left tackle. So maybe this guy can use his athleticism to become a left tackle.

He is intriguing to say the least.

Thats what I'm talkin' 'bout. We need to develop O-linemen and I thought I saw one report say he had athleticism similar to recent HOF lineman Randal McDanial. I say make him a versatile back up.

  7. I agree about Hester. He does a lot of body catching to me and not with the hands. Most number one guys snatch the ball out the air.

The other thing I want to say is that maybe we need to make it easier for WRs to get on the field as rookies. I have yet to see this happen under Turner. The fact that we have a QB from day one of OTAs that is the undisputed starter may help this cause. He can lobby for who he develops a rapport with. Thats why I like Bennett's chances. I would compare this favorably to if Donovan McNabb had gotten to play with Kevin Johnson early in his career. They were together at Syracuse.

  8. Kreutz and Urlacher are HOF'ers right now, IMO.

I disagree on both these guys when I compare them to recent HOFs at their positions.

The last two centers in the HOF If I recall correctly are Bruce Matthews the all evereything O-linemen who made all pro at three line positions and Mike Webster from that great Steelers team of the 70's. Kreutz is not in that class. The guy who made it previous to those two was Dwight Stevenson who had a very short career but was regard as one of the best to ever play at the position. Thats not Kreutz either. I also can compare him to Bears' HOF center who back in the 50's and 60's Mike Pyle who also was one of the best to play the position. Kreutz doesn't measure up to him. A guy who I thought deserved some consideration and compares favorable to Kreutz is former Bear Jay Hilgenberg good solid career made all pro and a few pro bowls but is not in the HOF. Lets face it OL get the shaft when it comes to being considered and centers seemed to be the lowest in that regard.

As for Urlacher, think of all the guys that made it to the HOF at MLB Butkus, Huff, Nitchske(sp?),Lanier,Lambert,Singletary and more recently Harry Carson(who I was not so sold on his selection) all have championship rings except for Butkus who was a beast. Currently the only sure 1st ballot HOF MLB is Ray Lewis and Urlacher will have to step up and play like he did earlier in his career or he can join the Mike Luccis and Hardy Nickersons of the game having good but not HOF careers.

  9. Instead of judging the players we don't have, why not judge the players we have? Based on the guys we have, we don't have a free safety. If we think Grahahm can play FS, make the switch.

The main problem with Bowman is that our safeties are more likely to get injured. Bowman lasted one game . . . why not switch him and Graham? Bowman can battle it out with Vasher & Moore for the #2 CB spot, and Graham can be the starting FS. I personally like that idea.

I think Graham is a heckuva CB prospect and filled in very well for the injured Vasher. This would give us to big CB's that both come up and force against the run. I happen to think Vasher may be on the way out if its finacially right.

  10. Combine times were all slow this year, for whatever reason. Probably the new surface, but every position seemed to average like a tenth slower than last year. You had guys like Maclin, who was never caught from behind a single time in college, running like a 4.49.

The big issue with Pegues isn't going to be his speed or even his character, it's his size. The Bears are looking for size at safety, since they've had problems with durability at that spot. Pegues is all of 5'10" 199 - he'd need to put on 10 pounds of muscle to even get up to Mike Brown's size, and Brown was part of the problem as far as injuries go.

Still, given the shape we're in at free safety, I'd have no problem with at least trying Pegues out (along with giving Afalava a shot at FS.) If he can step up and the Bears think he can add enough weight, we definitely need help there.

I have information listing Pegues at 5-9 194

Other knocks on him is he is a centerfielder type safety that drags down ball carriers instead of putting a solid hit on them.

  11. I agree, Mike Brown is the face of the Bears' defense for me, much more so than Urlacher. I was so glad to see him back on the field for a whole season, flying around and leveling people. I'm still a little shocked that they didn't want to bring him back, if only to tutor the new guys.

Still, Moore seems like a guy who'll work hard and live up to his billing. I'm not saying he compares to Mike Brown at all, but after hearing a couple of interviews with him, I won't mind him wearing #30.

How would you guys like to see a player wearing Dick Butkus' number? Thats what a lot of us had to deal with when Jim Morrissey was wearing that number as a rookie on the 85 squad. Butkus is the defensive face of this franchise.

Prior to Mike Singletary's arrival the numver 50 was worn by HOF center Mike Pyle who also used to do the analysis on preseason games with Johnny Morris #47 who held quite a few of the Bears' receiving records until Marty Booker broke them. Imagine how I felt when I saw a Ken Grandberry RB and Brian Baschnagel waering his number 47.

How did you feel when Shane Matthews wore Jim McMahon and Bill Wade's number 9 or when a guy like Tank Johnson , Tim Ryan and Jim Flannigan wore Dan Hampton's 99?

How dare Brian Urlacher wear Tom Hicks and Larry Ely's number! LOL Its almost as bad as when Wilbur Marshall wore Bob Peferini and Jerry Muckensterm's number.

Rumor has it that Len Walterscheid and Shaun Gayle are trying to receive royalties as a result of Devin Hester wearing their jersey.

Guys this has been happening for decades and now with the constant movement of plsyers via free agency, trade and salary cuts I have grown very accustomed to players wearing a recent legendary number.

  12. What have we did yet to make a judgement on any of our players? We have to go to camp , before we can start judging players.

    Great Post!

For example at Rams camp the number 2 overall pick Jason Smith drafted as a LOT is penciled in at ROT. With the amount of guaranteed money that this pick will get if he is not protecting Mark Bolger's blind side then they might as well be the Raiders who dropped big coin on their number 2 overall pick who stiil has not assumed the position he was drafted at Robert Gallery lined up at LG when he was the top LOT prospect.

  13. I'm with you...and I think Joe Jurevicius would be a great addition for probably a bargain. He's a good portion why TB won that SB against the Chokeland Faders.

Oh yeah, and he's Lithuanian too! ;) More appropriately pronounced "YUR-EH-VIH-CHUS" by the Lith's...

Look guys I liked Jurevicius coming out of Penn State and thought he did help Tampa in the Super Bowl in 2001. How old was Joe J then? Its 8 years later and quite a few injuries accumulated by Joe. He also has some family concerns that may be more important than football. We tried to bring in veterans last season with Booker and Lloyd and as soon as they got injured they basically shut it down. Thats how some veterans in the NFL act. They know that this is a business so they start to go into survival mode.

  14. Trust me guys I will not let this die and I really like everyones input. This makes me feel like we can get this accomplished and I really like the fact that we have someone like Pix who has tried this and can give us some good sound advice. If I had to pick an area that I would like to focus on it would be the Midwest and I like watching the MAC conference games because they come on a couple of networks here on my cable provider. I also get quite a few PAC 10 and SEC games on various networks so there are players in those conferences that I may get to see and have a "Fans" opinion of.

I hope I made it clear that I am not to technical with things like hip movement and really focus on if someone passes the eye test in pads in games.

For example: I can remember when Pix was singing the praises of a guy the Bears signed to the practice squad out of Canada named Israel Idonije. The way Pix had done the research was so impressive that I had to follow this guy just because the way Pix spoke so highly of this unknown prospect.

Another example was Nfo speaking highly of Devery Henderson when he was coming out of LSU. He recently has posted a follow up about Henderson I think comparing Bears' draft pick Johnny Knox to Henderson and said that Henderson hasn't developed into anything more than a deep threat.

These are the kind of tid bits that everyone here adds to our conversations that leads me to believe that we could do something that would be very exciting.

  15. Per the Bears' website, Earl Bennett is changing his number from 85 to 80. Apparently he wanted to go back to his college number (10) but the NFL won't let you switch from an 80-89 number to a 10-19 number. Seems like a dumb rule to me.

However, he's now got 80, Berrian's old number. The superstitious part of me thinks that could be a good thing. The article also lists the new rookies' numbers, and there are a couple of other familiar ones:

    Earl Bennett: 80 (Bernard Berrian)

Al Afalava: 46 (Chris Harris, Doug Plank)

Mike Rivera: 59 (Rosevelt Colvin, Ron Rivera)

    Derek Kinder: 83 (Willie Gault)

    D.J. Moore: 30 (Mike Brown)

...then again, Rashied Davis has Bobby Engram's old number, so maybe it doesn't mean anything.

Speaking of superstition back in the 70's the Bears had a helluva cover corner named Alan Ellis who wore number 48 and he tangled feet with a WR named Bo Rather who wore number 80 at practice and tore up his knee so that has been a real interesting number. There is even some defensive players who have wore the number.

  16. Sounds good! Would you be in theory looking for posters to pick a guy per se, and then do the bio like your Stafford Example? Maybe have something close to a sign up sheet?

No since all this would be about guys in your region we would be gathering data about certain players and then like Pix posted we would need someone to edit our data. For instance I can't remember if you were a Purdue fan or not but I can see you maybe being a little more focused on that programs pro prospects.

I for example attended Western Illinois for a couple of years so I always keep an eye on the Leatherneck prospects like this year Jason Williams the fas LB the Cowboys drafted and RB Herb Donaldson who to this point I'm not sure who he signed with. This program has produced Steelers Safety Mike Wagner in the 70's, Bryan Cox and Aaron Stecker.

I would want you to do a bio of as many guys you wish and there may be more than one bio about a player and we could do a Kiper-McShay type of thing and list the bio from both guys or even a few guys. Generally you know there may be a slight difference of opinion from two perspectives of someone you have a gauge on. But in most cases the difference could be resolved with the an impartial party(editor) who can make an assessment based on the information provided by whoever. In my case I didn't have to edit anything because it was my point of view.

  17. Guys thanks for the positive response because unlike some of you I didn't play organized football and have actually played baseball and ran track in high school but have been a football fan since the mid 60's. Since the 70's I have been a big fan of the draft and now I'm obsessed with it. I have a job that has me clocked in at 4am and home by noon most of the time so on Saturdays after work I would slumped in front of the TV watching the college games from that time until I fall asleep at night. Some Saturdays I have viewed parts of 8 games from various networks from CBS, ABC, ESPN,FSN,BTN(Big 10) and VS. A lot of these players I have actually seen play live but I'm not going to lie and say I saw a Johnny Knox or a Jarron Gilbert play but guys like Big Ben, Byron Leftwich,Tony Schefler,Chad Pennington,Greg Jennings and even PJ Pope. I saw play because this area gets quite a few MAC games.

What I have in mind has to be totally from eveyrone's perspective for example: I consider myself a couch potato so my guide that I have been giving my friends has been titled The Couch Potato Scout's Draft Guide. My whole concept is that I make some football related comments but most are like I'm sitting in a room full of guys drinking beers saying man dis guyz pretty good. This way I get to follow something I love and talk about it in my language. I could careless if a 300 lb lineman can run 40 yards. Just get in the way of someone for about 5 and1/2 and let the RB shoot past you.

Here's what I say about the number one overall pick:

    Matthew Stafford 6-2 230 Georgia

He is the best in a weak group and he is an underclassman. He can make all the throws and is a great leader. he is very confident and tends to think his arm will win every challenge. Underclassman QBs tend to struggle in the NFL. Buyer Beware!

I say we do this with no regards to grammar, sentence structure or whatever just say what you feel about a player. I always start my intense research around bowl game time and cap things of with the Combine and internet reports from the pro days. I'm a big advocate of watching Senior Bowl practice because it is conducted by NFL teams and I like watching the East-West Shrine game also. I avoid putting 40 times in because theris sometimes tremendous differences between Combine times and pro day times so I took that out of my guide but I do make reference to a guy if he ran the fastest time at the Combine or if he had a blistering time at his pro day with the comment his stock rose after he ran a xyz at his pro day or at the Combine.

Guys I think we can do this and it will be a lot of fun.

  18. I remember back in the day they had a video of Perry at 300+ jumping up form the floor onto a table. That was 24 years ago. Also we didn't need NFL security to report on Perry's campus exploits. He reportedly consumed 33 beers in one sitting. Lets keep in mind that Fridge was considered overweight most of his career but with the Bears his weight was never over 350. Now we have 300 pound fullbacks in the league. And 260 pound QBs.

  19. I've been talking Bears and football with you guys for aprox. 6 years on 2 sites and know that I would follow you guys to the end of the internet LOL.

For the past 5 years during draft time I have been producing a little generic draft guide based on what I can see on my TV during games and workouts that I can view. Thats why my partipation on this site during draft time has dwindled. I'm busy compiling my unscientific research typing it into my computer and then printing up a few copies for my co workers so they can follow the draft a little better than they would be able to through the newspapers they find in our lunchroom.

So what I'm asking is why not all of us who like this site and love evaluating talent each start contributing to a draft prospect thread at this time of year every year. Though we may not agree on every aspect of a prospects ability we can have some much more informed debates and we can have the satisfaction of doing are own evaluations. I always take you guys tips and comments under consideration when I produce my free guide. The way I do this is unique because I just type it like the guy sitting on the bar stool who loves football btu I clean up the language. LOL Let me know what you guys think about doing this.

  20. I also like #59 as the next Chico? Seems appropriate!

If I had to guess the number to be changed I would guess Johnny Knox wearing 13 unless he is in the minority of those that don't think the number is unlucky.
