  1. Since the Bears have brought in two previous former Rams O-linemen(Miller and St.Clair), I wonder if the Bears might be going after Pace. I personally would like to see them draft and develop some linemen. That has been the one of the things that has been lacking with this coaching staff since they have been here the other thing has been developing a drafted WR.Beekman is the first O-lineman that was drafted by the Bears who started and played more than one game under this staff. In defense of this staff if we look back over the history of JA's picks you can count the O-linemen he has picked on 1 hand.He has always chosen to bring in FA or fringe OL and plug them in.This year its Omiyale.Rueben Brown,Fred Miller,John Tait,Roberto Garza and St.Clair all were similar in the fact that they were veterans that had limited shelf life left.I think they should blow the whole line up and rebuild it with younger players including Kreutz.

  2. I had a little time on my hands so I looked up all the guys the Bears have taken with their second pick excluding Grossman since he was in the first round. Here is the list:

2002 Roosevelt Williams Tuskegee actually a 3rd rounder. What's he doing now?

    2003 Charles Tillman Louisiana Lafayette

    2004 Tank Johnson Washington

    2005 Mark Bradley Oklahoma

2006 Devin Hester Miami he along with Daniel Manning were picked in the second round with Manning actually being the Bears top pick.

2007 Dan Bazuin Central Michigan What's he doing now?

    2008 Matt Forte Tulane

  3. Good to hear from you. It's been some time.

Yes, I would consider Andre Smith. If I had a top 5 or even a top 10 pick, I would probably pass. As bad as it is to ever miss on a 1st round pick, top 10 picks have the added bonus of killing your cap on misses. At 18, I think you can begin to afford taking greater risks, especially on such high reward. Many considered Andrea Smith the #1 OT prospect in the draft until the combine, even w/ the character flags. So if we could get potentially the top prospect OT at 18, yea I would consider that.

The real question is, would Angelo? He has been burned by some players w/ character issues of late. Even the ones who did not ultimately burn the bridge, it is likely they added to Angelo's heartburn. Will Angelo see past the red flag and take the risk.

I would also point out that he took a risk on another OT last year, also in the 1st round, who had red flags. Yes, those red flags were injury while Smith's is character, but I question whether Angelo would draft consecutative 1st round OTs who many others dropped or removed from their boards due to red flag issues.

Major point nfo! That coupled with the fact that his very first OT pick was Colombo and he too suffered injury issues. So much so that now he is the starter in Dallas .I don't understand what motivates his choices in the first round but your point is well taken and I could see him maybe laying off of an OT in the first round. If he decides to go first round WR I could see him maybe going OT in the second round but I'm not sure the guys from the lesser conferences at OT warrant a 2nd round pick.We know Angelo likes to go for a reach in the 2nd round so names like Sebastian Vollmer of Houston,Augustus Parrish Kent State and Troy Kropog Tulane come into play.

  4. http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/2009/03/be...sh_bullock.html

I remember liking him when he was coming out, but getting a guy from the terrible New Orleans secondary does not seem like the best move.

I also liked him coming out and its ironic that he gets a chance to replace another former Cornhusker. I watched the way Zack Bowman played in the one game he got a chance to play in and maybe what ever they teach at Nebraska may translate well to the Bears system.

  5. Wouldn't you at least wait until you had your camp next week to see how he looks compared to Omiyale (who hasn't actually played guard yet)?

No doubt any money saved will immediately be used to bolster our impressive free agent haul this offseason...

There's got to be more to the story than just simply releasing him.I agree with you.Why not wait until mini camp? This only makes sense if the money is being earmarked to bring back St.Clair who is more versatile.

  6. That would be a great draft as it covers our 2 biggest needs. I would not mind a starting O-Line of Williams-Beekman-Kreutz-Omiyale-Oher. Signing St. Clair for depth would be nice, but I'm not sure we would still sign him if we drafted Oher.

I like the Robiskie pick in the second as we desperately need help at WR, but we also need a #1 WR like JA said and I don't follow college ball enough to know if he could potentially fulfill that need.

Overall though I would not complain at all with those first 2 picks so that means that it won't happen.

That would be 2 very good picks if it fell that way but if the Bears passed on Macklin who according to that mock was still on the board I would be sick. This guy could hep immediately in the return game and WILL develop into a number one reciever.

  7. Yeah, I read that as well. He could be a steal at 18. I think he just got out of shape after his suspension and isn't back yet. He would be one where the Bears would surely have to monitor his diet and training activities pretty closely, but has loads of athleticism and talent.

IMO he would fit right now on the right side where he would not encounter as many speed rushers which he does have trouble with. With Chris Williams penciled in on the left side he would seemed to be perfect to start off on the right.

  8. If he drops to us I'd be all for taking him. Sure, he's got osme problems, but he also has the talent and has shown it in the college game.

Thats what I'm thinking and he should also have the necessary motivation to prove everyone that passed on him wrong. Plus we would be getting a top five talent for a bargain at 18.

  9. The Score is reporting the Bears released Metcalf today.

Not surprising. He had plenty of opportunities to gain a starting position and never really came close. His suspension last season led me to believe that his days were numbered.

  10. We don't run 5-7 step drops. We overwhelmingly use 3 step drops.

Last season all the close games that we lost in the 4th qtr was it because the offense or the defense not being able to hold the lead? Carolina,Tampa, and Atlanta are three games that the offense lead by Orton did enough to win the game come to mind. Why is there so much negative talk about the offense when the defense let this team down a lot. I think the Bears should consider one of the safeties at 18 also.Whether its Delmas,Cheung or Moore could all be in the mix at that pick. How about our inconsistent pass rush.Could the Bears be considering a DE? I wouldn't be surprised if they went that way.IMO they should get over their fears and draft a WR to give themselves another weapon on offense.I personally like Hakeem Nicks and think he will be a similar fit to the Bears offense as Forte was last season.

  11. Damn, rookie mistake. Double post.

hey nfo whats up? Its been a while.

Word from the Alabama Pro day is that Andre Smith only did 19 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press after he basically put all his stock into this workout.I can see his stock dropping even more and he may be in the mix at 18.Would you take a chance on this guy who up until his behavior just be fore the bowl game was atop five talent.

  12. Repeatedly the Bears under JA have drafted small school guys in the second round with mixed results. He is another guy that looks like he gets a little overwhelmed at times. Remember Roo Williams? He was so overwhelmed that he felt he didn't belong.First of JAs questionable second rounders. The second one was Tillman. TT I know your passion for the Bears is outstanding but D. Manning is what he is a small fish in a big pond.Letting him do something simple like return kicks until he can get the hang of the Cover 2 might help. Why did they get rid of Chris Harris? he had the same problem of being out of position a lot. D. Manning is a good return man but he has had to play too many different rolls on defense for his football IQ to handle. Yes I said it I think D.Manning has trouble understanding the Bears scheme.

  13. Oh just for the record I had the Bears after the first nine game at 8-1 with the loss being to Philly

Why? I have been a Bear fan for over forty years and I have a more realistic view of what they can get accomplished. They lost the leading passer, receiver and rusher from last season and we had no clue who we were going to get production from on offense. We start a new QB and rookie RB plus 2 new receivers .What did you see that would make you believe that the Bears would win their first two games on the road win they haven't done that since 1963?

Its okay to be optimistic but if you are a football fan you know the Bears had some major issues after a lackluster preseason and poor season last year.I realistically think 10-6 or 9-7 is an attainable goal for the Bears.

BTW Didn't your original post say you had the Bears losing to the Colts and now you say you thought they would win the first two games?

  14. Wesson relax man! This is just two weeks into the season and the Bears just played two tough teams on the road.Did you actually have them 2 and 0 after the first two games or 1 and 1? Now they come home after starting off with two straight road games for the first time since moving to Soldier Field in the 70's.Now they have a chance to play two games at home and they are facing a team that might have a little termoil going on in Tampa. After how Garcia played last season for the Bucs I don't understand the thinking of replacing him with Griese but, I'm not mad about it because I think Garcia would have caused the Bears problems with his mobility.

So after two weeks the Vikings who a lot of the talking heads pick to win the NFC North are 0 and 2 the Lions who every one thinks should be a playoff team is 0 and 2,while the Bears and the Packers are 2-0 and 1-1 respectively. I like our chances this week with this defense going up against John Gruden's offense. If we can continue to stop the run like we did the first two games I don't see Griese being able to be the Bears by himself. He has always been a guy who could put up some decent stats but tends to have crucial turnovers when the game is on the line.If the Bears get some hits on him early in the game he will start throwing the ball up for grabs. We witnessed this very thing last season which is why the Bears put Grossman back in.

  15. If he were borderline to make the roster, I am sure it was because of the amount of veteran Safties ahead of him, not because he did not have potential & skills. I like this kid and think he will do excellent in the NFL. I am sorry to see McGowan injured AGAIN, and out for the season. Happy to see Steltz get an opening.

Is Tampa 2 defenses usually this rough on safties or is it just our misfortune that we can not keep safties healthy?

No Pix I think our version of the Tampa 2 is rough on safeties because the most recognized Tampa 2 safety John Lynch was healthy for most of his career and the original Cover 2 safeties with the Steelers where Tony Dungy learned the defense always stayed healthy. Its also not a coincidence that Mike Brown's health has been good thus far this season since he has been playing more of the deep middle this year.McGowan was playing closer to the line.Payne OTOH looks like he is suffering from the same thing that has plagued all the other young players who have been tried there. At times they are out of position.I still think some time down the road that Tillman might wind up at safety and just might be the right mix of physicality, speed an coverage that the safety position in this scheme demands. If you have noticed Bob Sanders of the Colts seems to get dinged up a lot also. Its kind of ironic that he and Mike Brown are both smaller safeties who like to bring a load with them when they hit but Lynch was the same way except he was bigger.

  16. This must be the year that the Bears are going to go up against a lot of their former players and with the Titans on the schedule we will see Justin Gage also.He seems to be doing ok there.Gireise this week,Moose and Chris Harris last week and Wade and Berrian coming up.

  17. Unless this OG can play OT its not likely he would go that early in the first round.Usually the hot shot guards and centers go towards the end of the first round and into the second and 3rd round.I could see a scenario where they would trade back to get your player since JA likes doing that anyway. Now if there is a stud safety like Cheung of Oregon there at 17 I could see them pulling the trigger on that. I could even see them taking another OT also.

  18. Which TE should he have thrown to because one of the TE's had two critical fumbles in the game. The play that the Bears got stuffed on is the same play that ran on the goal line for a TD. I do agree that they should have used play action but Turner thought he could fool the Panthers or that they could get one yard since he had 3 TEs in the game.On that same play another of the TEs got caved in on the play by the DE who made the initial hit on McKie.So as a group the TEs had a poor game and I would have used play action and went to Lloyd since he seemed to be the only receiver Orton had feel for.The problem with all our speculation is that the Bears have decided that they are going to "Get off the Bus running"and if you can't get one yard in a critical situation you can't back those words up.

  19. I thought I noticed the tackles getting to the second level and throwing blocks while they used the interior linemen to cave in the middle of the defense. The FB would lead throught the whole first and then Forte was right behind him.On one play Olsen was used as a FB out of the Bears 2 TE set and he was the lead blocker. While watching NFL Matchup this morning I found out the TE as a lead blocker is a staple of Ron Turner's.The analyst showed a play from last weeks game and one from 2 years ago with the only difference being Clarke was the TE and Thomas Jones was the RB.The reason why both Jones and Forte have success with this type of blocking is because both of these guys don't waste time running through the holes.

  20. I think this is going to be a field position field goal type of game. The key is the Bears 2 TE alignment on offense. They split Clark and Olsen wide a few times in the Indy game which tipped off whether the defense was in man or zone coverage.Expect the Bears to do more of this. When they go to this alignment look for them to utilize Davis in the slot and that will be key. Lets also keep in mind the Bears have played the Panthers quite a few times under Lovie with some success during the regular season.Orton also has a start against the Panthers with a win so he should be familiar with what they will be trying to do to him on defense.

On defense the Panthers will be without Steve Smith for the second straight game so look for them to try and pound the ball gainst the Bears with Stewart and Williams forming their one two punch. This will be a LB and Safety game for the Bears D and tackling good is a must.Even though there was a great effort at Indy, this will be a much more physical game.

Special teams will be the key with the emphasis on Maynards punting,Robbie Gould FGs and Idonije blocking kicks.I think Maynard will pin the Panthers inside the 20 a few times in the first half resulting in Gould lining up for at least 3 FGs.Idonije may get a block of a FG early in the second half that will be a momentum changer.Don't expect Hester to get any clean kicks punt or kick off and don't be surprised if D.Manning gets a key run back.

    Bears 19 Panthers 14

  21. I think we have to give them a dose of what is affective against our version of the Cover 2 short passes to the backs out of the backfield, neutralize their best defensive players(Freeney and Sanders)and attack the center of the defense with the TE.Also execute what the WCO is all about taking what the defense gives you.If its underneath routes then so be it.Be patient and don't force anything.

  22. The number one thing that will improve the Bears fortunes this season is an improved running attack. This will especially be key in tonights game.Run the ball control the clock and keep the defense fresh and off the field. As I remember from the Super Bowl the Colts battered the Bears with Addai and Rhodes running and threw short passes underneath the Bears zone.Look for them to employ a 3 WR set with Harrison,Wayne and Gonzalez in a bunch and Dallas Clark split on the other side. How would the Bears matchup with this formation. If they go to a nickel the Colts will hand the ball off to Addai. If the Bears stay base Cover 2 then Manning will pick them apart.

    Here's My 5 Keys.

1.Run the ball and control the clock.

    2.Stop the run

3.Try and take advantage of Bob Sanders in coverage with Clark or Olsen.

4.Get the ball in Hester's hands"By Any Means Necessary"

    5.Win the turnover battle.

  23. I agree with you and if we look at the first10 picks of that same draft and see where they are now you would be surprised that the Bears aren't the only team to have made a mistake.

Check that! I just looked at the entire 32 picks of the first round and only 3 of the picks are considered stars Braylon Edwards,DeMarcus Ware and Shawn Merriman(Who will be playing on one leg and has been busted for a banned substance).Thats 29 other picks who have not reached a high level of play.3 of the top 10 players drafted that year are not with their original teams.2 of those are currently out of the league and 1 was suspended for a year. When you look at the draft this way it doesn't hurt as much.
