The odds of either of the UDFA QBs, from what was touted as a notoriously weak class, coming in as a rookie and doing anything are very poor. If both Rex and Kyle end up injured, the Bears probably won't win another game. I think option 2 could happen. Rex always looks great in camp, where he knows nobody can touch him. I can see him raising his worst performances up, which means he probably throws less INTs. Without BB and Moose, his two favorite targets, I can see his best games dropping as well. However, I still think he's a mid 70s QB overall, and that will be because of his poor completion ratio. JMO .

Tom's not alone in suspecting Rex will get more chances even if he doesn't shine this year. Here are a couple scenerios: 1) Grossman plays slightly better football than the 2nd half of the '06 and the '07 season. Half way thru the year he has his another injury. Orton comes in and stinks the place up the rest of the season. What's Angelo going to do? He has no other legitimate QB prospect in the pipeline for '09. Yep, I could see him giving Rex another one-year chance! 2) Orton looks bad in camp, Rex looks great, and is the starter. He plays more consistently, with his "bad Rex" games now in the 40s. However, he doesn't have the huge games like he did in '06. That's quite possible because BB was his favorite target. He ends up with a 75 rating, under 60% completions, and cut his INTs down some, but not much. That's still not an NFL level of performance, but I could see Angelo giving him another one-year chance because he improved.

There are only X number of passes to go around. If you give more to Olsen, there are less given to somebody else. I'm not a Turner fan, but he did a pretty good job of spreading the ball around, IMO. A lot of teams only have one pass-catching TE, whereas the Bears now have the luxury of two! That means sharing the load, and that's what Des and Greg did, almost 50/50. If anything, that was unfair to Clark, since he had 2.4 more ypa. Olsen will get more opportunities as his skills improve. .

I don't mind the Bears being ranked that low if it lights a fire under the team. I think the pack and queens are ranked too high tho. The NFCN plays a pretty tough schedule this year and all four of the teams have question marks. I could see the division title being won at 8-8. The Bears offense looks doomed to me. Angelo promised stability at the QB position. Instead, he made it even more unstable than it was last year by replacing Griese with a couple UDFAs who stand little chance of ever being good enough to play in the NFL. Williams hopefully will be a stud, but JA didn't get an LG, and kept Garza at RG. The two guards are critical for a successful running game. Hopefully the D will stay healthy this year, or the Bears will be picking in the top ten in the '09 draft. .

I've been hearing that next year's crop of QBs looks to be weaker than this draft class was. .

I was laughing so hard watching Rosencrap pathetically begging that my dog was giving me his "WTF" look! .

Look at the bright side - A quarter million more cap space pretty much pays for one of the 7th rounders. Thanks Lance!

Meggett made his living as a return specialist. If he hadn't been a a star doing that, he'd never have made it in the NFL. Wolfe won't have that opportunity as long as Hester is a Bear. That's going to make it a lot harder for him to be productive enough to stay in the NFL for very long. As I said in the other thread, if Wolfe can't run in the middle, he's not going to be another Warrick Dunn by any stretch of the imagination. Having to put him in space for him to produce makes Garrett a specialty back. With Benson, AP, and a rookie who supposedly will have the potential to become the starter, Wolfe is going to have to prove himself with very limited opportunities. JMO .

If Wolfe is going to be another Dunn, then he has to be effective up the middle. Warrick has crashed the line countless times in his career, and that set up his other plays. Terra is correct that if Wolfe is only used on screens, running wide, and other plays that keep him in space, Ds will key on that and shut him down. .

I'm a bit surprised that nobody caught the error in that article. Brown isn't moving to FS, he's actually staying at FS, since that's where they started him last year. I agree that the safety positions aren't virtually interchangable, regardless of Lovie's statement. He's always feeding the media BS. AA was Strong because he's better against the run than trying to cover receivers, and Brown played Free because he can cover, and because the Bears hoped he might stay healthy by not getting into the pile as often. As for citing sources, I'm not jumping on anybody, I'm just stating my preference. I always want to see pieces cited, preferably with the URL or link. There are many times folks paste an excerpt, and I want to go read the entire article without having to search all over for it. If the entire article is pasted, I want to know who authored it to judge it's credibility. .

You're not alone, AZ. I've seen Brennan play enough times that I strongly believe he has neither the talent nor durability to succeed in the NFL. If Angleo pins his hopes on Colt, Grossman, and Orton, the QB carousel will continue for at least 3 or 4 more years before the team can recover from the disaster. .

It's up to Angelo's whim whether to make Rex's incentives LTBE or NLTBE. It would be very easy to make them the latter and still be very reachable for Grossman, and that's why I like NLTBEs in this case. Make Rex perform at a level he hasn't already, and push whatever portion of the $2M he earns into '09. .

Every team in the league knows Angelo is very interested in Flacco. Isn't he the QB the team has a private workout scheduled for? At any rate, any team wanting Joe knows they better jump above the Bears regardless of Griese's status at that time. If the Bears pay Brian his $300K roster bonus due in a couple weeks, they are doing it more to hedge against not getting the rookie QB they want in the draft, rather than trying to use him as a smoke screen that every other GM can see thru. JMO .

Sign-and-Trade is an NBA arrangement with guarantees built in to protect both teams if the deal goes sour. Also, if the trade goes thru, it eliminates any penalty to the trader. The NFL has no such procedure. .
-
That's fine if the QB is able to find the shrimp and get the ball to him. Short quarterback + extremely short Wolfe = problems doing that, especially when our O line hasn't been opening passing lanes. .

The total cap hit of about $6M falls on the '08 budget by trading him. They could designate DM as a June 1 cut and spread it $2M in '08 and $4M in '09, which is much more manageable. That's why the Eagles will be demanding a high trade value to offset what will be that big of a hit. .
-
That's a fact. Since Snyder bought the team, every year they ask (demand) players to restructure contracts so they can get under the cap. So far they've been getting away with it, but it's just a matter of time.... Take a look at the Raiders and the 49ers to see what happens when it does. Back to the sign-and-trade: I don't think there's a clause in the NFL CBA addressing it. The NBA says if such a deal goes sour, the contract is voided to protect the trading team from being stuck with a huge contract they never intended to pay the player. Without such specific terms, the Bears would be fools to get involved in a nonbinding verbal agreement that could damage their cap for years to come. JMO .

I think some of you guys are hitting the Holiday Cheer early this week. Putting Beekman in at LG when the guy can't even play his native RG position??? Are you all Orton haters who wanna see him carted off the field??? .
-
The editor of Bear Report said that Beekman is the smallest-looking 310# guard he's ever seen, that he hasn't shown the strength to hold his ground, nor the quickness to pull. If those observations are correct, he isn't going to touch the field unless he shows some big time improvement. Angelo blew it with that pick.... .
