Here we go again, the ongoing 'it's everything but Jays fault' argument. Just because I'm curious I looked up "good Qbs with bad olines" and found this: http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/06/ranking-nf...-patriots-brady Here are a few names from this article with their particular olines and where they ranked going into last season. With each name I put up I would add not always are they (QB) successful but the team, despite their Oline ranking. Brady - 26th, A. Smith - 20th, Tannehill/Dolphins - 27th, J. Winston - 21st, R. Wilson - 30th, E. Manning - 25th, Mariota - 32nd, Luck - 28th. So you see, it isn't so difficult to find a successful QB/team after all. (and I didn't add Rodgers). If Jay signs on with another team and LEADS that team to the playoffs and the Super Bowl, I'll eat crow. Until then I wish him the best in whatever he does next.

What's your QB choice?
I don't think this is about settling on the journeyman backup. It's certainly not about falling in love with him. (Not for me anyhow). Hoyer just made the most sense since he was here last year and had worked with Loggains before. I think the majority agree that a QB needs to be drafted. The question is whomever that is; whether drafted earlier or later, probably won't be ready to start. Thus the discussion of having a veteran in place for the "bridge" to whenever that rookie is ready to play. Personally I'd like to see 3-4 QB in an open competition for the starting position. Whether it's Glennon at this point, Shaw, Barkley and a draft pick I just want the best that will come from that . Glennon should not be guaranteed the job if he signs.

We are screwed at QB
Id still prefer they have at least one other veteran. Unfortunately, justified or no Shaw has an injury history going back to college. Nothing chronic it appears. Just bad luck.

Well crap (about Hoyer not Taylor). They must not be having any luck in dislodging Cousins from Wash. Read they were looking at getting Garçon too.

Hmmm. Good question. If for nothing else maybe it'll help the Bears from overpaying for Glennon if they are bound and determined.

Rather than rehash the last 10(?) years of this topic I'll say; 'tomato / toMAHto' and I mean that as we pinpoint problems on the team for different reasons yet knowing there are (were) in fact, problems.

Anthony Becht the former Tight End? That would be like having Martellus Bennett weigh in on Cutler...oh wait. If they sign him (Glennon) to a deal, I hope he does prove his worth as a starter, if only for the short term. Of those who will potentially be on the roster (and depending on who they draft for the position) my money's on Shaw winning the job.

That's almost a 'double negative' sentence. Have we ever agreed on anything?

I think the better alternative (IMHO) would be to try and keep Hoyer AND draft a rookie QB. With Hoyer you have the known of not only how he'll perform while in Chicago but has worked with Loggains system more than just in Chicago. And he could be had for virtually the same deal (or better) than Glennon. When I speak of unknowns, I'm comparing Glennon with Hoyer and either being in Chicago. Not a rookie.

I'm curious of this "upside" you speak of. . Isn't that what the Texans said last year?- What's your QB choice?
The only way I'll like this is if they draft a QB this year. There are way too many unknowns with Glennon to consider him "starter" quality. The guy hasn't even played for a few years and there don't appear to be anyone else after his services. We'll definitely need other options besides Shaw.- NFL Free Agency thread
Not sure I understand the logic in this. You have a 'known' with a Hoyer on the team but you're willing to spend that type of money (1 year deal or no) on a relative 'unknown' in Glennon. And that doesn't consider the guy hasn't played for 2-3 years? And there are no other suitors to boot? That should tell you something. This makes almost zero sense to me. Granted I'm intrigued in Glennon but not enough to cobble this type of deal.- NFL Free Agency thread
Is it me or does this draft analysis list more negatives than positives?- What's your QB choice?
I chose the Hoyer option but would say 'draft a 1st (or later) round' QB and make it an open competition with Hoyer, Shaw (maybe even Barkley) and the rook. Why not?- We are screwed at QB
Isn't his style of coaching similar to his dad's? To me Cutler would make more sense(?) since he had some success under Shanny Sr. But perhaps Hoyer makes more sense since he actually witnessed his play calling first hand. Same could be said for Loggains. Guess we'll see.- NFL Free Agency thread
So in reading more up on this and knowing they 'spent' big on Massie last year, I see Pace had an escape clause in place. Maybe Pace knows what he's doing after all? http://bearswire.usatoday.com/2017/03/07/b...e-ricky-wagner/- NFL Free Agency thread
Wasn't sure who this was reference to but it appears to be Patterson. Hmmm.... http://bearswire.usatoday.com/2017/03/07/b...elle-patterson/- We are screwed at QB
Maybe still a little high but this (to me) makes more sense.- We are screwed at QB
So was Shanahan coaching there when Weeden was starter or when they drafted Manziel? I was looking at his contract history, especially with Cleveland and Houston. It looks like in 2013 he signed with Cleveland (after being released by Arizona) for a two-year deal for $4 million (?). Going in he was expected to be a backup Weeden. Then in 2015 he was signed by Houston for 2 years $10 million. He "fought" back and forth with Mallett for the starting job and eventually led the Texans to the playoffs where he flopped. Eventually he was released and ended up in Chicago on a one year $2 million deal. With the situation unsteady in QB with who is going to be the starter does he have that much solid ground to stand on to demand $10 million? Is the market open for that? He knows what potential Shaw has and he's already signed. He also knows chances are that if he's (Hoyer) signed in Chicago he'll only be a placeholder for one maybe two years. If San Francisco is that desperate for a QB why wouldn't they just draft one? If worse comes to worse and Hoyer acts the turd, then we still have Barkley. I still wouldn't mind giving him another look personally.- Combine Open Thread
Was watching a late broadcast of the Combine and saw some talk about a kid named Obi Melifonwu out of UCONN. Played Safety in college but looking like he'll convert to CB in the pros. Kid is huge at 6'4" and nearly 220# and "slayed" at the combine. Doesn't Fangio like him some big corners? http://www.theuconnblog.com/2017/3/6/14838...ngland-patriots- We are screwed at QB
I used to make excuses for Cutler too. Until I saw how flawed he was. Hoyer is who we know he is. He's capable of being a Kyle Orton type QB not a Franchise QB, which is what we need right now. And he'll cost a lot less. I'm glad we agree on Watson and look forward to agreeing more.- We are screwed at QB
Since I've been openly critical of Cutler over the years I'll pose the question of 'how much more screwed could we already be'? Take into account that until his injury, Hoyer was actually playing pretty well. He was playing smart and not turning over the ball and getting multiple 300+yd games. Problem was he wasn't converting a lot of that to TDs. Which could have been attributed to a few things. First thing; running game. Before week 4 when there wasn't much of a running game at least not until Jordan started cranking out 100 yard games. Even then it took a few weeks for teams to take him (Jordan) seriously and give the passing game a chance. But again, Hoyer and Howard never really had a chance to mesh too much as Hoyer was out before mid-season. Passing game. There really wasn't a consistent receiving group for Hoyer to go. With White in and out, AJ in and out and Royal out more than in, Hoyer had to throw to the likes of Bellamy, Wilson, Thompson and Meredith (although as the season wore on he proved his worth). Also throw in that once Martellus left for greener fields he had the fragile Miller and a host of unknowns at TE. I should reiterate that despite that he manged to still throw for over 300 yards in each of his appearances. Defense. We know that 'in order to win championships you need defenses' and I think it safe to say ours is almost there. If you take into account once about three years ago our defense was ranked near 30th in every category to last year when they were ranked 10th (?) overall; they've come a long way. If Hoyer holds true to form and maintains his ability to not throw games away (ala Cutler) our defense will be that much better, we'll still have Jordan and our receiving corps will more than likely improve. If not we'll have what appears to be a pretty talented player in Shaw backing him up (or perhaps vice versa). And if I have my way, they'll have the next Dak Prescott in Deshaun Watson chomping at the bit to play. All hope is not lost.- Connor Shaw re-signed
Hey it can't be all bad. Our last Spurrier coached QB got us to a Super Bowl. That guy Grossman.- Arthritis in both shoulders for Jonathan Allen DE
Perhaps. But after getting White two years ago and signing players like Royal, Pace might be a bit hesitant in getting a player with a known injury history. - We are screwed at QB
