I don't know about 70%, and even if it were 70%, whoever the Safety is required to cover is going to exploit that major weakness.
-
So you disagree and then basically say that he will be a nickels corner? You draft first round for year one. First round players should start year one. Period.
-
I hate that reasoning for two reasons. 1. If they wanted Safety, they should gave drafted a freaking safety. The two best were there. And studies have shown (link from previous thread) that drafting a first round safety is basically a guarantee. 2. You're basically saying that the safeties we have REQUIRE a stud DL and LB core to succeed. I'd rather have a FS who can succeed without needing a superb front 7.
-
And if Peanut doesn't move? It's a first round nickel corner. Bad value if that's what it is.
-
Thanks goodness they didn't go LB. That just doesn't make sense. CB makes more sense, but not as much as S and DT. Also. It's not as easy to finda good safety late...just look at the roster since Mike Brown.
-
Got too cute. FS flew off the board and at best there is minimal value. DT in the second.
-
Not a smart pick IMO. Not with FS being a much greater need and the top two FS on the board.
-
Not happy.
-
I dislike it. DT, SS, and GMFS were greater needs.
-
I think it's Defense all the way. Lovie sucks
-
SF picks Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State
-
But what if ALL THREE are on the board?! Then I say you make the move.

bradjock is probably away...let's go ahead and draft for him. San Diego already grabbed WR and CB, two of their biggest needs. At 89, San Diego selects Daniel McCullers, NT, Tennessee. Massive dude. Big need. Starts immediately in their 3-4. Indy (Stinger) is on the clock
-
I'd like that draft a lot. It's just too bad there aren't any B10 Safeties worth a damn.

The Bears' 3rd-6th picks equal out to about the value of a pick in the bottom of the second round. Bears 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 6th for a lower 2nd round pick. Would you make that kind of move? Suppose the following: 1. Donald is gone in the first, but Pryor and HHCD are available. 2. One of three DTs falls (Hageman, Jernigan, Tuitt) 2. Someone we like is there. In this scenario, I would be pretty happy to see: 1. HHCD - Starts at FS immediately and reminds us of Mike Brown 2. Jernigan - Any of the three would make me happy at this point, but 2. Bucannon - Starts at SS immediately and It'd be unconventional for sure, but I don't think I'd be super unhappy with it. They're more likely to start than a 6th rounder anyway.

Just for fun, an all Notre Dame draft would work as well: 1 - Zack Martin, OG - Not a good fit for the Bears, but many scouts believe he could play OT or OG. 2 - Stephon Tuitt, DT - Possible 3 - Louis Nix, DT - Unlikely he falls this far, but that would be a great pairing. 4 - Troy Niklas, TE - A lot of y'all like TE. He's maybe the 2nd best. 5 - TJ Jones, WR - Meh 6 - Prince Shembo, OLB - Meh 6 - Chris Watt, OG - Wasted pick, but it'd complete the Notre Dame draft.

With Emery, there is a hall-pass at this point. But the same can't be said of all GMs, and the link in a recent thread pretty much showed any one of us could have guessed and had similar or better success than Jerry Angelo. I have no doubt in my mind that JA should have been sitting on a PC somewhere typing his thoughts into a message board rather than running the Bears.

Going into this draft I think about Emery+Trestman vs. Angelo+Lovie. If it were still Angelo and Lovie, I'd wonder a few things: 1) Would Lovie be making all the picks but one like usual? 2) Would he be ignoring his scouts and overall team needs to placate a coach? 3) Which pool-jumping dickhead is on his radar? 4) Which small school DB are they enamored with? With Emery and Trestman, I don't feel like that. I feel like they've done their due diligence and are going to draft the BPA at position of need unless BPA is too ridiculous to pass. Just look at the last two drafts: 2012 w/ Lovie 1-Shea McClellin - The obvious need was OL (Riley Reiff and David DeCastro available), yet they went with McClellin. This reeks of Lovie. 2-Alshon Jeffery - Great pick that pleased just about everyone on the board, but OL was still the #1 need and there were guys like Konz, Mike Adams, and Kelechi Osemele available. 3-Brandon Hardin - Didn't look like a bad pick at the time, but it also looked like a Lovie decision. Meanwhile, OL still #1 need. 4-Evan Rodriguez - This looked like an Emery pick that never got a chance to take hold because of Lovie and his offensive leanings as a HC. Meanwhile, OL still #1 need and Bobby Massie was picked one pick later. 6-Isaiah Frey - Lovie pick. 7-Greg McCoy - Lovie pick. 2013 w/o Lovie 1-Kyle Long - Definitely a need + BPA pick that fits with Emery's "superb athlete" comments 2-Jon Bostic - Same thing as Long. Bostic had/has intagibles. 4-Khaseem Greene - Good athlete with great coverage/zone/recognition abilities, moves like a safety 5-Jordan Mills - What we've seen from Emery is, if there is a need, he's going to flood that need with help (also see the DE position this offseason). Mills is powerful and athletic for his size. Fits Emery's M.O. 6-Cornelius Washington - What was I saying about flooding a need? Three LBs in one draft. This screams Emery. 7-Marquess Wilson - Troubled, but extremely athletic and poses a matchup issue. With that said, I think we'll see two safeties drafted this year. It's the biggest position of need. Further, I believe Emery is less inclined to listen to a coach - see the nonsense about Clint Hurtt's Louisville connection to Pryor - than JA was. I wouldn't be shocked at all if the Bears started with two Safeties given Emery's propensities. Maybe HHCD in round 1 and Deone Bucannon in round 2?
-
Acceptable. Two DTs, two Safeties, two DBs. None of the names I love a lot, but Anthony Johnson is a good 4th round pick, and Sunseri has the chance to be workmanlike in the pros.
-
Simple fact is, his size is a slight concern, and that's enough since it's not a position of immediate need. If Donald, HHCD, and Pryor are gone, then maybe ILB is on the list, but I hope not. There are plenty of high upside guys in later rounds.

It's something they have to consider. Does Matthews take the Bears to a position where they can score 30 every game guaranteed? If so, the defense will certainly suffer, but the injuries last year might make them think that they will improve this year simply because of better health. Conversely, adding a defensive stud, no matter how good, is unlikely to move the Bears' defensive ranking much this year. I'm an OL fan, obviously, and I'd be giddy if they did something like that.

With the 85th pick in the 2014 draft, Green Bay selects: Will Sutton DT Az St Both DTs are on one year contracts. Raji is declining. Green Bay's M.O. is BPA. Philly (Adam) is on the clock.

Phil Emery: 40% of NFL rosters are undrafted free agents
jason replied to Bears4Ever_34's topic in Bearstalk
If he said that, and it's true, it's a very misleading way of painting a picture. Based on the 2013 64-man rosters posted on pro football reference, the NFC North supports that stat. Team-UDFA Bears-17 Packers-25 Lions-15 Vikings-14 So, yeah, 256 roster spots, 71 UDFAs, that's 28%. How many of those guys are starters? Bears-1 Packers-4 Lions-2 Vikings-2 This sounds like GM-speak for "yeah, that pick was a miss, but almost half the league's rosters (not starters) are UDFAs!" -
Agreed, there will be good trade down opportunities. For a guy like Matthews, however, who I view to be a ten-year bookend, it better be a damn good deal. Maybe even requiring a future first rounder.
-
Sorry, but if the draft plays out like below, and Matthews is there, the Bears should absolutely take Matthews and tell Mills, "Tough luck." HOU Clowney STL Robinson JAX Manziel CLE Bortles OAK Watkins ATL Mack TB Lewan MIN HHCD BUF Evans DET Barr TEN Dennard NYG Donald STL Pryor This could happen. If TB likes Lewan more than Matthews, the only teams likely to pick an OT are Buffalo and Detroit. Buffalo needs WR help, and Cordy Glenn is their LT for a while. Detroit is a threat to take Matthews, but their D needs much more help than their O. That's why they would likely go with Barr. St. Louis is also another potential, but they'd be unlikely to draft two OLinemen with two first round picks in the same draft.
