With the 21st pick, the Green Bay Packers select Brock Jensen, QB, North Dakota State. If only I were the Green Bay GM. Seriously though, they select Calvin Pryor, FS, Louisville. Big need, potentially BPA. GB friends tell me a TE or Center would be nice, maybe even OL help, but all would be a reach at this point. Philly (Adam) on the clock...

I mentioned those teams because I either live in the area (Titans), and/or have very good friends who are fans that I can bounce ideas off of. Neither Titan fanatic I know believes Manziel falls that far, but both believe he's a can't pass selection despite Locker.

With the 11th pick, the Tennessee Titans select, Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M. Titans fans have taken to calling Locker "Mr. Glass." That's not good. Barr is another possibility, especially because his connections to the coaching staff, but Manziel is potentially one of those game-changers that can't be passed on. At the very least he reinvigorates a franchise that is somewhat stagnant. The NY Giants (Adam) are on the clock.

What I'm saying is, he should have never gotten the spare tire.

1. QBs need not be athletes if they have Brady's abilities. DEs and LBs are way different. 2. Strength and speed are relative to position. It's why low reps for DEs and DTs mean something most of the time. But it's not the be all end all. Players must still have a combo of abilities. Having said all that, a non-QB player who is not performing needs to bust his ass to improve the various measurables you mentioned. He needs to improve speed, strength, etc. to beat his opponent. Maybe Jared Allen figured out how to improve anticipation, burst, and leverage to overcome his unimpressive bench reps. Therefore, nobody gets concerned about that. But if a player is not improving? A spare tire is the evidence of a lack of off-field effort. And if he's doing all within his disposal, he would probably look much better shirtless than SMC. Otherwise it's on them (unless the GM and HC try to plug a square peg into a round hole and set the player up for failure).
-
Agreed. Lovie will draft D to preserve his misleading reputation as a defensive guru. "Josh McCown is our quarterback."
-
No no. You misunderstand me. I wholeheartedly agree, which is why I always harp on the idea that we fans could pick just as well in the draft as the GMs. Just about all of us knew it was a bad idea to pick him, but they did it anyway. And then they had him bulk up, negating SMC's best asset (speed). Double stupid. Now they are basically admitting their flop with his move to LB. As for him getting cut, you could go back in this board's history and see where I hoped for his success numerous times. I hope he uses his average looking build and turns into another Urlacher. I hope every player on the Bears turns into an all-pro. Obviously. But I don't think he will even start, and I believe he will cement his bust status. The frustration stems from the fact that he had the choice to put on good weight instead of bad weight when he was told to gain. He could have hired dietitians, nutritionists, chefs, personal trainers, etc. and packed on explosive muscle with his multi-million resources. Instead, he clearly didn't put in a full effort, since he was able to transform his body this offseason.

With the 5th pick, the Oakland Raiders select Jake Matthews, LT, Texas A&M. After the shock of the Sammy Watkins pick, the Raiders look to replace Jared Veldheer. The Saffold fiasco was embarrassing, and Penn is not the answer. Passing on a QB was tough, but QBs are somewhat deep and this is a win-now move for a coaching staff and front office that signed a veteran QB, a potential #1 WR, and needs to show improvement this year to keep their jobs. Atlanta (stinger) is on the clock.

As always, eat shit. This dude is a professional who gets millions to do nothing but be super strong, athletic, and play a sport. It's his obligation as a professional athlete to be in superb shape at all times. Maybe he would have done better, and fans would like him more, if he had taken that professional obligation a little more seriously.
-
That's probably the fairer, less knee-jerk take. Virtually everyone on this board thought it was a bad pick because of the reasons we have seen SMC do so poorly. I just wish he would have busted his ass to put on solid weight instead of the spare tire.
-
Maybe we need to have a way to inform the person on the clock?
-
But was he busting his ass BEFORE?! Apparently not. And comparing him to a guy like Urlacher makes no sense because Urlacher was able to do amazing things with his body...regardless of outward appearance (not like he was fat). He was doing wha the needed to do to be extremely successful. If SMC did the same he'd get he same pass.
-
I now hate McClellin and hope he actually gets cut. How does a professional athlete have the same build as me? Ridiculous for a guy who has the money, motivation, and need to do nothing but learn a Playbook and look like a brick shithouse.
-
Pretty much this. Also, I've watched lots of Bama games since I'm in the area, and I believe he has elite FS range, angles, and intelligence.
-
I can join, but I barely pay attention to most other teams. I could really speak for the Niners, Titans, and Seahawks well, but most others would be based on prevailing internet opinion.
-
I could easily see a first round safety starting.
-
Yeah, I'd actually prefer a FS/DT/DT start since I think there is a lot more depth at DT than FS. This would outstanding: 1. HHCD, FS, Alabama 2. Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame 3. Johnson, DT, LSU
-
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200000034...ers-trade-block I'd send the Niners a 6th rd pick for him. That dude was/is fast as hell. Great change of pace.
-
That's exactly what spurred this thought. I didn't want to give it away completely, but I've seen more than one mock where Tuitt falls to the Bears or past them in the 2nd. That would be a no-brainer in my mind, even if the Bears were to grab Jernigan or Donald in the first. He's a stud, and adding him in the second would be a coup.
-
Lots of mocks have the Bears getting Donald or Jernigan in the first. Most of us are fine with that. But what if there is another guy there in the second. Maybe Hageman or Tuitt? Would you be fine with that? I think I would simultaneously dislike it while being excited about it. It's a definite gamble, but it's one of those gambles that has a decent chance of paying off. You could place bets in multiple places, but sometimes you just have to put your money in one place and let it ride.
-
I've seen, and done, lots of mocks where Donald gets picked by the Bears in the first, and Tuitt is available in the second. That would be a definite statement by Emery.
-
This goes back to the debate we had on the board about height. Sure, ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL, if there is a difference and it's speed, then you go with the faster guy. That's obvious. But that's usually not the comparison. Jerry Rice ran a 4.71, and it's an obvious choice to select him over pretty much any other WR in NFL history, many of which were much faster.
-
Good points. This just reinforces the concept of JA and Lovie being a horrible duo in regards to drafting and developing talent. You'd think at least ONE UDFA would have made a significant, positive impact greater than Rashweed Davis.
-
At the same time, there is a reason track stars don't automatically transition into the NFL. Football abilities mean a lot. You get a team full of superstar 40-yd dash warriors and they'll get beat all day by a team full of pretty good athletes who are just damn good football players.
-
I like it better this way. There are more days to enjoy it. Talk about it. Analyze it. When it's all in one day, there isn't as much to digest. Now when the first round is over, I have a flurry of emails from friends talking about which team screwed up, what each team should do the following day, etc. And, on top of that, it's extra money for the networks.
