I think they brought Pace back to live with the train wreck he has put together for the 2021 season. No other GM in their right mind would want to take on this mess and then get blamed for a 4-12 season right after an 8-8 season.

The cap situation with the COVID impact has made this basically an impossible task. I bet they brought Pace back but said you cannot push anything into the future. So no trading of future picks or extending/restructuring contracts of players unless approved by higher. Also, no dead money can extend beyond 2021. If they do that, I actually like the decision. Let Pace try to save himself without handcuffing the future. If he pulls it off, he may get an extension. If he fails and the team gets worse (highly likely), then he is the scapegoat and he is fired. Then the new GM comes in with a much better cap situation and no lost draft picks in 2022 and can shape the roster to their liking much easier.

It makes sense, but it's flawed from a management and ownership perspective. Why permit the anticipated failure? It would be better to cut bait, tell any incoming HC they have carte blanche on personnel decisions, and expect it to be a three year process. I distinctly remember people on this board saying the very same thing in Pace's defense when anyone challenged is wonderful picks.

Then a new guy comes in, blows it up one year early because he doesn't have a relationship or loyalty to any players, and the Bears are on the road to recovery assuming the new guy makes good picks, etc. If I'm the new guy, the first thing I do is look for guys who aren't performing up to their salary and have huge cap hits without dead cap numbers. I'd attempt to trade the following guys for picks, immediately:

    • Akiem Hicks ($12M Cap, $1.5M Dead) - Easy choice. He's fallen off the last two years. Get something for him while there is still a market.
    • Bobbie Massie ($9.3M Cap, $2.3M Dead) - He sucks. Next.
    • Jimmy Graham ($10M Cap, $3M Dead) - Thanks for the year of tutelage; it's time for Kmet to prove himself.
    • Charles Leno ($11.2M Cap, $5M Dead) - He sucks worse than Massie. Bye.

The other players to consider either don't have a significant cap hit, or have a prohibitive dead cap figure.

I’m voting with my dollars. I will spend no money on any Bears items. I will not attend game unless I have to (I'm currently on the waiting list) and not buy any concessions. All until I see 2 seasons in a row of real success. I do not trust the Bears to do anything right. This is amateur hour.  The only potential that this isn't a complete joke of a franchise is that they are just being cheap.  They see the schedule next year and know it's doomed.  So, why eat these contracts.  Let it play out and let them go after.  You can fire Nagy and just say Pace is a FA next year.  Then rebuild.  Maybe Georgie Boy told Pace he can't change draft stock, so draft where you are, so he doesn't sabotage future seasons.  I'll be curious how the draft plays out.  it might speak more to this theory...

That's me for 2+ years now. It's also why my viewing interest is so low. If I'm not excited about the Bears, why watch the NFL?

I think Jason is predicting what Pace will do now that we know he is back. He forgot the small shifty WR, because we need more undersized RB/WRs.

LMAO. You're right. I forgot about that, but, then again, I didn't put much thought into it...like Pace.

So you traded the 1 , 2, 3 5 to trade up to get Lance?, seems like a bit much to trade 10 spots, about where he will go. He is being the 4th QB off the board, not sure where he falls but I think he would best fit our scheme. I also like Wilson.

Bro, that was 1000% sarcasm. I'd Epstein myself if the Bears did that in the draft.

  5. LOL. Since Pace and Nagy are coming back, this should be easy: First, they'll re-sign Trubisky, and probably overpay for him

    Draft
1st. TRADE UP! Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State.
6th. Deontay Anderson, S, Houston (bEcAuSe He'S tAlL)
7th. Drew Himmelman, OT, Illinois State (BeCaUsE hE's TaLl)

And there you have it. They got a QB; they keep Trubisky around as a mentor ; they "invested" in the OL

3 FA, Foles and high draft pick.

That's my pick, but with a caveat: I say trade down in the first round, and gain an extra 2nd. That means the FA is mostly supplementary, someone very minimal in terms of cost and expectation.

Teams that could jump up: IND, TB, PIT, NO. Each of those teams have an aging QB on the edge of retirement and some degree of uncertainty.

Use the late 1st rounder, and both 2nd rounders, on a combo of QB, OT, OT in whatever order makes the most strategic sense based on where the chips fall. Both Mac Jones and Kyle Trask are available in the 2nd round in the Walter mock; so, it's at least possible.

    This looks great:

    • Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama
    • Kyle Trask, QB, Florida
    • Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame
  7. 1. Play calling has been horrible

    2. OL has been bad

    3. Trubisky will always be a one-read QB

    4. That slow-mo, telescopic lens replay of the INT was horseshit

    5. I’m sick of watching the opponent on 3rd&8 or so, and seeing the DBs 10yds deep

    6. I’m sick of seeing the Bears’ WRs Never wide open, but the Saints - and every team the Bears play - seemingly have someone open every other play

    7. Blow this whole thing up. Pace, Nagy, both need to go. Fire sale trade players to get draft picks if needed. Revamp the whole thing. The whole “let’s hold the other team to a low score and try to get a turnover while being passive on offense”-strategy doesn’t work. Even with one of the best defenses of all time it didn’t work for Lovie, who is a great defensive coach.

  8. Bears 17

    Saints 30

The Saints jump on top early, as Kamara is unguardable/unstoppable. Brees picks the zone apart and there is nearly no pressure from the Bears’ front four. Bears are forced to blitz and get torched as a result. One or two huge plays and momentum clearly rests with the Saints going into half. The second half continues with a virtual stalemate because the Saints are just running clock.  The Bears score late to make it look closer than it really was, but the Saints are high-giving on the sideline as it happens, because it doesn’t matter.

I dunno if this is just trying to gain leverage, or he means it, but apparently Watson is following Chicago weather forecasters on twitter LOL

If Nagy and Pace get one more year, can you imagine them trading the future to get this guy to prove that Nagy was good and it was Trubisky that was the problem?

And do you think that would work?

To me it sounds like it would just cost us the chance to get more OL, and other players, and end in the same result.

I think he's just posturing. Probably pissed about the DHop thing. And I think you're right about the draft picks. He'd end up running a lot more in Chicago than he has in Houston.

I'm simply looking at a possible SB window in the next 2-3 years if we can get the defense to return to it's former dominance. I absolutely agree that we need to find our own solution and would want them to also draft a QB.

How about just next year's 1st round pick?

    Peace

That would be more tolerable, but I'm still not a fan. IF this team were closer, as in one or two key pieces from being a contender for the next handful of years, then maybe. But I just don't think this team is built like that. I think there is over $40M of dead cap next year in Foles, Quinn, and Leno. On top of that, the top five cap hits next year are on a defense that couldn't get off the field against GB to save their life. In fact, the defense was confused!

Either draft a rookie or get a really young guy.

Side note: Deshaun Watson can be added to the poll above. He's unhappy.

  11. The Saints playoff game could very well be his last as a Chicago Bear. If he's a good QB, an NFL QB, wouldn't he want to truly display that for a future employer? Wouldn't he want to have a small piece of film to use to say, "The Chicago scheme severely limited me," and prove his actual abilities?

If I'm Trubisky, this is the time to open it up. I'm going for a new contract with a different team, because the time in Chicago is almost certainly over. I'm trying to make a highlight reel to impress GMs who think that not only is Chicago where WRs go to die, but it's also where QBs go to die.

If I'm him, on nearly every 50/50 opportunity, I'm throwing it up to give my WR a chance. If I'm him, when there is a read between a check-down and a deeper pass, and all other things are relatively equal, I'm going deeper every time. If I'm on the bootleg and nobody is immediately open, I'm tearing ass downfield trying to show versatility. There have been multiple games this year where he did not run, and should have.

What I'm saying is, he really has nothing to lose. If he gets hyper-aggressive and succeeds, he just got a bigger contract and an excuse. If he does it and fails, everyone will still think he is a one-read QB who has accuracy issues downfield.

I voted for Mayfield but I am intrigued with the idea of trading for Stafford if Detroit is willing to part with him for a 1st and a 3rd.

    Peace

Intrigued? Maybe. For a 1st and a 3rd? Absolutely not. Stafford is going into his 13th year in the league. The Bears should give up a 1st and a 3rd for a guy who only has a handful of years left, and likely doesn't have the same type of success in Chicago as he did in Detroit? No thanks. The Bears need to get out of the habit of attempting to find sloppy seconds, and actually find their own gem who will stick around for a decade or better. Otherwise that same old "this is how many QBs the Bears have had since the Packers had Farv and Rogers"-graphic gets displayed until we're old and gray.

Five pass plays over ten yards and only one completion.  One interception.  The coaching staff does not have more faith in him than that game plan was the best he could handle..

Great post. I quoted you because that graphic needs to be seen multiple times.

Yeah Ryan Walter Pace is an idiot.

Philly is a hot mess. How can a franchise go from model franchise with SB win to this clown show? They couldn't even win a division with 7 wins and we got in playing with the #1 seed in our division. Howie Roseman was the Exec of the year in 2017 and look at this team now. That award is hot garbage, the 2016 winner was Reggie McKenzie of the Raiders, Roseman in 2017, and Pace in 2018. None of those franchises are in the top 10 of the league.

To be fair, Reggie McKenzie got fired at the end of 2018, likely directly related to the Khalil Mack trade. Which is odd, because the tide is turning for many in regards to whether or not the Bears actually got the better on that trade given how infrequently Mack's name pops up with big plays.

But back to the point, Ryan Pace is an idiot.

Yeah, if you could plug in any GM, HC, DC, and QB and have similar, if not better results, what's the point? This franchise has severely underachieved with the opportunities it had. It starts with the front office and ends with scheme and play calling on the field. How many times to do we have to watch a square peg try to get pushed into a round hole?

That's hilarious! I hadn't thought of it that way. The Bears could literally hire just about any combination of GM, HC, DC, and QB as they have now, and get similar results to those they have now.

    Dreaming Big here:

Trade Mitch and three future 1st rounder picks to Cincinnati for number 1 pick 2020. Mitch gets a fresh start in his home state while Bengals start rebuilding.  Bears select Joe Burrow and and then use the two second picks to bring in OL talent. Address other needs via draft and FA.

Nagy then has one season to work with a Franchise prototype NFL QB. Assuming he is not extended, Jim Harbaugh’s contract expires at Michigan in January 2021.

HELL NO. That’s a horrible idea. The Bears need MORE picks, not less. And it’s arguable that a better pro WB May be there when they draft anyway.

When you condense the field to ten yards,  all defenses can look good.  Trubisky has shown that he can't go deep on an acceptable level.

Bingo. I called the late Trubisky INT 2-3 plays before it happened. It may have even been on the first play of the drive. As soon as they were behind and needed to stretch the field a bit, the INT was inevitable.
