People are making an awful lot of conclusions about the coaching staff and Emery's drafting ability based upon preseason production. Sure there are tools that you see and things to be encouraged but what matters is regular and post-season production. Conclusions should be made based upon that. Right now...this is just preliminary information that gives you a bit of an educated hypothesis as to what these players and the coaching staff may be capable of. All of it is happening with very vanilla playbooks (both on our team and for the other team).
  3. The bigger question is, in what world isn't Edwards a better option then both backups we have on board. Edwards is a smart QB that actually is a pretty solid fit in the WCO. I was watching the Seahawks game last night and I was quite jealous of their back-up situation. Nice to have guys like Tavarus Jackson and Brady Quinn behind you. And everyone will laugh at me for saying Tavarus Jackson but he's a good back-up with some upside. He was rushed by the Vikings and clearly not a good starter but he's making a lot of progress and looked pretty darn good in his first two preseason games. We have taken a major step back in the quality of our QB depth this year. In fact, I'd argue it is worse then the year we had Caleb Hanie as our primary back-up. If Cutler goes down for an extended period of time, McCown probably isn't good enough to win us a few games and he certainly hasn't looked good this preseason. He's a good 3rd string QB and a bad back-up. And our 3rd stringer really isn't at all prepared to be out on the field and lets be honest, there is a very small chance that he ever amounts to anything worth a damn. The upside potential in him is nominal and I think its a big mistake this team is making in not having a quality backup who would be capable to help this team win one or two games if Jay were to go down for 5 or 6 games. I say that because if you go 2-4 with your backup over a 6 game span, you probably still have a shot at making the playoffs if you are good. Going 1-5 you are out and my guess is, depending on the level of teams we'd have, the upside with McCown would be 2 games, likelihood would be 1, and unless you were lined up against the 3 worse teams in the league in that 6 game stretch, you aren't going .500.
  4. Edwards would be a much better back-up. To be frank, he'd be better then McCown who hasn't really looked very good in his 2 preseason games.
  5. Remember guys, its preseason. Doesn't take much guts to step out of the box in the preseason. The proof is in the pudding and the lt results. Lots to be encouraged about yesterday but it was the preseason and it was against a really terrible team.

He has to work on technique but holy cripes are the tools there. Dude was a freakin stud last night and It was amazing to see. I look forward to seeing him grow and pancake the shit out of people. I hope he turns into a perennial all pro!!!
  7. 3 of the 5 throws to Marshall were on designed plays. You had a quick slant where you went to Marshall...a one on one in the red zone and then a designed screen play for Marshall. The other throw he was pretty open in the middle and the 5th I'd give you was a force (but Marsh was opened). Hard to say a guy isn't spreading it around when he makes 5 throws.
  8. I actually think part of the plan was to get Bmarsh some action as I don't think the coaches want to show too much. Plus other then the one pick, which was a bad throw, Marshall was pretty darn open.
  9. When you have Marshall one on one in the red zone you go to that play every time with the back shoulder throw. That is one of the highest percentages plays in our offense in that situation. That was perfect.
  10. I agree with you and think the team needs another quarterback behind Jay.
  11. He actually was open but Cutler waited too long and put the ball in an awful spot. He had to go earlier and over the top (the help from the safety was too far away). Really bad pick.
  12. No way. He's got a cheap contract and can play all 3 LB positions. Completely agree with Dawhizz!
  13. This also might be the coaching staff just sending a message to Webb. Figuring he needs a swift kick in the butt. We shall see.
  14. For those of you who were concerned there wasn't going to be a competition. Webb was demoted after his poor performance in training camp and the preseason opener. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/footb...0,2978879.story
  15. We'll see Carimi kick butt at RT somewhere else, LOL.
  16. I was probably most impressed with one thing from this game...Cutler manning up and saying he should have put the ball on the back shoulder (on the pick to Jeffrey). For all of Cutler's pro's, his biggest inability in my opinion has been his overall leadership qualities and the fact that historically it is everyone but his own fault. Maybe I'm crazy but I felt like in the post-game this was one of the first times he's taken full responsibility for his actions. I also heard an interview from Forte on NFL network earlier this week where he commented that Cutler is a lot more mature this training camp (said it must be the fact that he's married and had a kid). A more mature Cutler would be the best thing to happen to this franchise. He still has all of that skill and plenty of time to win a superbowl or two (or three!). All things considered no major injuries and some of our young players stepped up.
  17. Just let them be healthy. I won't even make any judgement until the 3rd preseason game and even then, knowing this is a brand new system, those judgements will be minimal. I will say this...if we stink (like win 4 games bad)...I want both Emery and Trestman fired.
  18. Melton concussed in the game. Patrick Mannelly knocked out of the game as well.
  19. Bowman is a perfectly competent nickle back, imo. The problem is, if one of Tillman/Jennings go down, Frey is the other starting corner so we will be hurting (unless he steps up and shows he can start...which would be sweet).
  20. Another thing that would be huge would be Hardin developing. I haven't heard hide nor hare about him which probably means he isn't playing all that great.
  21. They have officially ruled him out and indicated it was a concussion. My guess is he misses at least a week, if not two, but he should still play in a couple preseason games and be ready for the opener.
  22. Echo your sentiments. Plus its training camp...a lot of picks get thrown by all QB's.
  23. Reportedly needs surgery on his hamstring. Given our lack of depth at the CB position, this is a big blow. On the bright side, Frey apparently has been having a great training camp. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/footb...,0,324278.story
