This unit has been a top defensive unit for years. It was under Lovie's tenure, soured under Babich, and was once again an elite defense under Marinelli. Rod is one of the most respected defensive coaches in the game. I know that you hate the Cover 2 but last I saw the 3-4 was torched by the Niners (vs. Packers). The fact of the matter is the Bears defense has worked and it has worked incredibly well. Not only that, I've seen young members of the defensive line take steps forward under Marinelli (Wooten, Melton, etc). You hear what ex players have to say about Rod and that says a lot. Not only that, but he's a leader and a voice that our players relate to and our comfortable with. They might find a great new guy to be the DC, but when you have one of the top units in the league (and this past year the defense played at an absolutely elite level) you damn well aught to be concerned when you lose the coaches which led that unit. Especially when you have an aging unit with a lot of talent still on it. Makes zero sense to change schemes at this point in time. Not when you were a 10 win team that underachived. That is a team with superbowl potential and it makes zero sense to risk what could now be an overhaul to the defensive side of the ball. I also think it is very clear that trestman doesn't have the relationships with defensive guys (now I do think if I were a top defensive assistant I'd want this job cause of the talent) but this is a major major blow.

Dude hasn't even watched film on the Bears. What the hell else did he have to do?
-
I won't lie...I'd have preferred that.
-
This hurts a lot. Takes the wind out of the sails from the hire (which was a questionable one). If you have Marinelli stay on, I'm okay with it, losing him is a huge huge issue.
-
Wow...didn't see that one coming.
-
Since Kromer became the Saints OL coach they have ranked 4th, 5th, 2nd, 3rd in sacks allowed.
-
Keep Marinelli and they should be in good shape. They loved Lovie but they also love Rod. Love who we brought in as OC/Oline coach. Since Kromer became the Saints OL coach they have ranked 4th, 5th, 2nd, 3rd in sacks allowed.

Why would a team not hire Marinelli? He's had a top rated defensive unit throughout his tenure was DC with the Bears. Additionally, he was respected despite his failure as a HC and with the Bucs he was the most respected Dline coach in the entire league. You are smoking something if you don' think Marinelli gets hired pretty quickly. Especially since there are a lot of new HC's which will be looking for DC's.

This was a pretty exciting quote.

I buy Trestman before Arians. I don't want Arians.
-
I call BS. I guarantee Tice finds a job elsewhere (probably not as an OC) and you can damn well bet teams would be all over hiring Marinelli to be a DC.
-
I'm hoping Flacco leads the game winning drive here so if McCoy is the guy, Emery can hire him without having to wait another month (and potentially passing up on him because it took too long).
-
I don't buy it. There aren't many leaks in Halas Hall this days. I think it was simply Trestman telling a good friend that he had a good interview. Maybe even going as far as saying he was told he'd be brought back.

Bowen would break it down a bit and mention how little the Bears really run the cover-2. It is still the base defense but they don't sit in the cover 2 shell all game. It is well below the majority of the time. Outside of the Babich era, that has primarily been the case. Lovie ran it a bit more then Rod and Rod/Rivera both used it as the base defense but a lot more wrinkles and a lot of different looks (which aren't cover 2). Also talked about a lot by Dilfer and some NFL films people as well.

That is what I think it will be as well. Will be disgusted if they don't interview Shanny though.
-
Disagree. Bears can screw this up pretty easily.
-
Papa Shanny has indicated that it won't be until after they were eliminated. I didn't know you could force a team to wait. I'm guessing Papa wouldn't force anyone other then his son to wait (and I'm guessing his son is okay with that cause he's young and knows he will get a shot eventually).
-
I think Trestman is a guy I wanted the Bears to interview back when they were hiring Lovie (IIRC).
-
Its been quite a while outside of major football for him. I'd think at some point he'd realize his best shot is coming back to the NFL. I saw an article on soxtalk (I'm guessing maybe you posted it) and the article was talking about him as a head coach but was dated back in 09. He's been out of this league for a while. To hire him as a HC would be a joke in my mind. That isn't to say he doesn't have qualifications but after not interviewing some of the better proven candidates to then pull this out of your ass would just disgust me. I'm going to be irritated if we don't interview Shanny. I want McCoy, Shanny or Sullivan if we are going for a coordinator.

But you wonder how being near the crap that was Carimi and company impacts Louis production. Was he average because he was busy covering up for the others (and if he had average guys around him he'd have even been better?). Not sure but all I know Louis looked pretty damn good based upon my eyes.
-
Pretty darn good OC as well. That said, I hope they are looking at him more as a lets get to know you because we think whomever our HC is might want to hire your as the OC.
-
I can buy Sullivan as a good hire.
-
Sullivan did some nice things with the bucs offense this year and got a lot of credit regarding Eli's development from his time in San Fran. He was only an OC for a short time but seems like a very bright mind.

Reports that Chip Kelly is set to become the Browns next head coach. ian Rapoport @RapSheet BREAKING: Chip Kelly is close to a deal to become the #Browns coach, according to a source informed of his situation.

@MikeGarafolo Sounds like Mike Sullivan and the Bears had a very good meeting the other day. Went six hours, about twice as long as expected.
