In his defense, it sounded like he was going to be a project when drafted. He supposedly had some good raw tools but bad mechanics that needed to be overhauled. Martz was supposedly the guy that was going to work on that project (with the help of his guy Pep), but with them out, things might change.

If you listened to McKenzie, the dude sounded like a complete idiot. I'm not saying speaking ability says everything but he made Jerry (who wasn't exactly the slickest talker) sound impressive.

I'm a little confused. I understand your argument but when you are making the argument that a broke down 39 year old TO is better than all of our wideouts, it seems pretty clear to me that the team drastically needs a legit wide-receiver. Note: I personally don't believe that TO is better than 3 of our wideouts at a minimum but thats just my opinion. There is a reason (outside of personality) that this guy wasn't picked up after his tryout (which was widely regarded around the league of being an absolute joke).

Why no talk of Saints personnel people?
DABEARSDABOMB replied to WheresMyronBaker's topic in Bearstalk
The Saints have done a very good job drafting wideouts and lineman but it is hard to say how good they have done drafting vs. how they have benefited from the Payton/Brees combo. There defense is pretty poor and they haven't excelled there. As a whole, I just have a hard time giving there personell guy as much credit as some of the other candidates out there. -
I think Eddie Royal would be a really solid fit on this squad, especially if the Bears add in a #1. He's quick, good hands, solid route runner and comfortable with Jay. Put him with a #1 and Bennett (plus Knox and Hester) and I think that gives you 5 quality wide-outs who possess a multitude of skill-sets. It would also give Toub some intriguing options on special teams since Bennett, Royal, Knox, and Hester are all at least pretty solid returners (some being elite returners).

I'm in agreement with you. If you look at Hernandez he's the more talented guy, imo. Soft hands, great cuts and a better work ethic. I'd take either of them but if it weren't for Hernandez going down for a couple games early, he was the one who started off putting up the record breaking numbers. However, while I feel that way about Hernandez, it is hard to argue Gronk's production in the red zone.

I dont' know why but my two favorite candidates are the Chiefs guy and the Chargers guy. My only question on the Chargers guy is how involved was he in some of there poor pro-personell decisions. They've made some bad choices in who they have let go but at the same time, they have brought in a ton of talent and he was widely responsible for it. And the chiefs, for as mediocre as they have been recently, have done a great job of bringing in a lot of quality talent via the draft. I honestly believe he is the most likely candidate the Bears hire given his past experience with the club and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. He knows talent and would be a nice fit as a whole. The one guy I stay away from is the Pats guy. They have drafted pretty poorly in the past and while people talk about there 2 TE's and yes they are great players at there respected positions, but look at there defense and look at all the misses they have had in the draft. The only reason they have kept producing is because Brady is a rockstar at QB and there offense can outgun everyone. They have not done a good job the past few years in the personell department as a whole. In terms of the Giants guy. On one hand, I'm impressed with the amount of talent the Giants have brought in, however, I've also read some articles talking about Ross as being lazy and that concerns me. I want a guy that is not only smart but that will work his ass off to make the Bears better and if there is a question about his work ethic, I stay away. As a whole, I really feel the Bears have targeted some pretty impressive candidates and I have zero complaints with who they are looking at. I even have zero problem with the Bears keeping Ruskell in his current role because he has some nice experience and has had his own level of success (he's not a bad GM but he's not a good GM).

I realize our wideouts are not good but Terrel Owens is not good anymore. For anyone who watched the workout or listened to people with NFL experience, they all talked about how slow he was going and how hard of a time he was having. The dude is 39 and coming off a very serious injury and while he is one of the all time greats, he is not a good fit and it is an utter exageration to think he's better than every wideout on the roster. Earl Bennett is better and I'd probably make the case that Knox and Williams are too and I don't even like either of them. The Bears need to add talent at the wide receiver position but they need to do it via free agency and possibly the draft as well. I think that in the right system Hester could be fine and he's shown good strides as a pass catcher and if utilized property the Bears could see some success. Hell, I'm not even willing to write Knox off. The biggest problem with the Bears is the true lack of a #1 wideout. Add that and everyone looks significantly better and they all slide into positions where they are more likely to succeed. Bennett is a rock solid 3rd down target; Knox is a good downfield weapon; Hester has the shot to be a really nice slot wideout; The problem is right now we are looking at all of them as #1 and they clearly aren't that. It is why the team needs at least a #1 and possible another above average wideout. Note: For a long time I was with Jason in the support of a wideout like Owens. The guy was a stud and his lockerroom issues were widely exaggerated in my opinion. The dude is a good guy with no off the field history and is an all time great. Diva, absolutely, but the dude was one hell of a wide receiver.

I love to but he's not good anymore. No thanks.

Those are some really strong candidates. Chargers have drafted a ton of talent. Chiefs and giants too. Pats have stunk in that dept in recent yrs.

I'm not trading the 19th pick for Marshasll, not with the free agent wideouts available.
-
Interesting concept. I wonder what the Bears would get in return. I also wonder what they would intend to do at OLB if they moved Briggs (who is darn good). Are there any good FA out there? I'd assume we could get a quality OLB in the draft at 19.
-
I have no idea.

For those of you interested, his twitter feed is www.twitter.com/jaycutler6 He is treating with Bmarshall and it looks like Marshall was the first to mention it. I also saw Ryan Clady involved in the tweets.

That would make a hell of a lot of sense. I'd also fully support bringing Eddie Royal over as a FA signing. He's had a lot of injury problems but would be a solid depth addition who would work nicely in the slot. Should be pretty cheap too. It does sound like we are going to see Hester take on a more significant role in the passing game next year out of the slot position.

I agree. Mario manning ham makes a lot of sense. He's a speed wideout that the head could add if they decide to target wideout via the draft. Personally I think the bears should sign Mario and one other wideout and worry about de And lt via the draft. If they have the.money for three moves go vjax/Bowe/Johnson plus Mario Mann and Williams. Address lt and cb via the draft plus the lb spots.

You need to post more. I almost always agree with your perspective and I think this pass coordinator will allow the Bears to hire an exciting young name with some potential and upside. This will put the Bears in position to promote him to OC in the future if Tice succeeds and eventually gets another HC job. Note: All of that is major ifs and is dependent on the club suceeding but I believe in Lovie and I think the Bears are going to have a great off-season. I think this team has a lot of potential and a big reason is I think we will address LT and WR and we'll see continued development in the oline to the point that this team is going to have a few year stretch of dominate oline play (not saying it will be as early as next year, but it will happen). They will have to figure out a way to infuse young talent into this defense. The big areas of concern aren't safety, where Conte looks to have some nice potential (we'll see what Wright ends up doing), but DE and LB. I'm okay with our talent at the tackle position with Melton/Paea.
-
Williams and Louis is a very good potential guard combo. Add in Spencer who is a solid guard and I'm happy with the depth at guard (E. Williams is solid depth too). I'm also okay with Carimi as the RT and will trust in Tice who says he isn't an LT. Bears have never said he was either. Webb is the guy that needs to be replaced, but that doesn't mean you cut him, he has a lot of value as a swing tackle coming off the bench. Bears need to address LT and than I'll rely on Tice to draft a guard/center of the future (to replace Garza in time). People can complain all they want about the pass blocking but this team ran the ball fantastically this year and a big part has to do with the run blocking of the line, including the blocking of a guy like Williams who was huge at getting the initial block and than getting out down the field and making another down block. This created a lot of big plays and is not something most guards can do. The Bears have one of the more athletic olines in the league. Note: I'm not saying it is the best oline and pass blocking is important but when the biggest sack issues happened (and I'm ignoring the early stretch of football when Martz was hanging the line out to dry and they were still growing with each other) when Williams was down and you had Louis playing tackle for the first time ever (he's a guard) and other issues going on. Add in Hanie who was clueless and I was not surprised the line would give up a bagillion sacks.
-
I can't even fathom the logic in this. I've seen this proposed many places, however, it is very evident the Bears have decided Williams is not a LT. What he is is a very athletic guard who has shown a pretty damn good ability to run block and that is where he should stay. I have very little concern with our guards and truly think this line needs continuity, more experience, and an upgrade at tackle (Webb might be an athletic beast but he's proven he's nothing but inconsistent).
-
My big issue is I think LT is a bigger need than guard so I think my off-season focus would have to ensure we get a tackle, whether in the 1st round (if one falls) or via free agency (although I don't think any are out there). I'd probably spend my free agent money on wideout and end and would also probably throw a little more money at Briggs. He's an elite linebacker and well worth keeping for the time being. I would consider moving up in the draft if the top 4 tackles are gone, but I might also consider moving down if they are gone and nothing else the Bears really like is available. Stock up on additional picks and the Bears should still be in a position to find a few starters in this draft (given we have the extra pick from Olsen and would get another pretty high pick if you moved down 10 or so slots). Basically if a good DE or LT isn't available with our 1st rounder, I'd move down. Unless of course the Bears haven't addressed wideout, which means I'd have to add WR to that list.

If the Bears promote Ruskell after firing Angelo, than I really have to wonder what the hell is going on. No way is Ruskell the best guy out there. I'm not saying he's as terrible as some of these Seattle people say he is cause his teams made the playoffs the majority of his tenure but I just don't get how you fire angelo to bring in his best buddy. That makes zero sense, unless, the Bears ultimately have come to the conclusion that staying the status quo for one more year and if it doesn't work, you do a full overhaul, in which case I could understand, but they'd have really blown the pooch cause they'd have been better off sticking with Jerry one more year than. I'm not going to believe this is true, I just can't. It would be so assinine.

As I had mentioned, I've heard quite a few national guys talk about Chris and they say he has a very very bright future and that more of the smoke in Indy is just stuff they are throwing out there to better explain the firing and that really Chris has a really bright future. Basically put, the Polians are getting thrown under the bus. I just know the track record is fantastic. I also want to point out that I'm most interested in bringing in a college personell guy than a pro personell guy. I want the person with the scouting accumen running the draft and hopefully we can find a good pro guy. I wonder if the Bears would hire Gabriel back (he was the pro guy, correct?). Snead or the Giants guy (Ross?) are my new top choices.

They still got to bring Bates in but I saw your post and was like damn, great call Terra.
-
Cutler supposedly has recommended the Titans QB coach. Supposedly a young up and comer. Lovie has asked for permission to interview him but no one thinks they will grant the Bears permission. A lot of talk Bears would also be interested in hiring Koetter (Jacksonville) who is expected to be fired when a new coach comes in. Atlanta wants to hire Koetter as well. Both would be exceptional hires, but sound unlikely, which probably puts Bates as the most likely hire. Oline coach: Andy Heck? I have seen a couple posts on other forums suggesting this.
-
Another name I'd support hiring would be Chris Chandler or Rich Gannon as a QB coach. No idea what they are doing but both are smart guys that I know at one point in time wanted to get involved in coaching.
