  1. Polian also said if he had his choice, he'd trade for McCarron (because he has won in high leverage situations before) over Jimmy G. The Bengals supposedly turned down a 2nd and 4th for him last year. He was a guy I wanted the Bears to draft years ago.
  2. I wonder if a trade centered around Alshon Jeffrey + 3rd and like 5th round pick makes sense (or something like that). Michael Floyd playing so well in New England, might have minimized the potential value / need they had at wideout with Jeffrey though.
  3. You watched the rose bowl and are talking about Penn State's QB vs. USC's QB? USC's QB looked like a total stud. McSorley on the other hand, played well, but didn't at all look the part of an NFL QB. In general, his arm strength is suspect and he is not known for being overly accurate. The turnovers he had were pretty poor too, especially that pick that set-up the game winning score for USC. Patriots timed things perfect to move Jimmy G. With the draft class so bad, it is why I think we absolutely need to address QB via trade (or go with Romo and take a later round flyer and re-evaluate QB again in a year). I don't see how they can keep their jobs if they stick with Hoyer and a late round flyer in a weak draft....just to be back a year ago. They put themselves in this mess when they passed in last years draft (despite all those 4th round picks).
  4. You & I might disagree on Jimmy G, but I think we can both agree, no matter what, we need to target a real solution at QB now. Whether that is in the draft or via trade. By the way, I should point out, I would not have supported signing Osweiler a year ago, but I do like Jimmy G (because I think his tools are superior across the board...he's got a strong arm, quick release, is accurate, and appears relatively poised. He's also learned from the best. If a Mariotta or someone like that were in this draft, I'd opt to draft a QB vs. being so pro Jimmy G trade (because the value of the cap savings would be nice), but I just don't see that player in the draft. If someone put a gun to me, I'd still be okay with Kizer / Trubinsky because I don't think we have the luxury of waiting on the QB position another year. As a fan, maybe they can deal with another bad season while we build other parts and then go QB, but you have to remember Pace / Fox have their jobs on the line, and with that, I just don't see how they can ignore QB, unless the "ignore" is using Romo as a temporary solution.
  5. I would never ever in a million years send a top 15 pick for Jimmy G. I would hope our 2nd and a 4th could get it done and if it took a 1st, we'd have to move down and accumulate other assets. If it took the 3rd overall pick, I would never in a million years suggest it. I was surprised Magazu isn't being retained (I don't know if it was a mutual thing and he is looking for something else or if he was just let go though).
  6. Just cause he was Brady's backup doesn't make him not the best option. This is a guy who after being a relatively high draft pick, hasn't actually had his value crash or do anything that makes people think he can't start vs. so many other guys. This is a guy who was drafted and thus far, looks like a guy who can be much better then the position he was drafted. There isn't a QB in this draft who has a better chance to succeed in the NFL then Jimmy G does. That isn't to say Jimmy G is a sure thing...none of these guys are, but Kizer / Trubisky are only two with all the physical tools and they have a lot of things that lack desire. Watson is way to iffy (not to say he can't change). Jimmy G is the best of available talents.
  7. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/footb...0104-story.html Thought this summary was a pretty good read and I generally agreed with all of his answers. Two things that stood out was how he is trusting the process and being patient and highlighting how despite various reports, John and Ryan are absolutely on the same page. As long as that is the case, then I fully agree with the decision to keep with the path, but I do agree this is going to be a pretty defining offseason, mainly because we have to find a way to get a QB and It might be that out of all the guys available (via draft / trade / free agency) only one guy (if that) might be that guy and somehow we have to hope our front office is lucky/smart enough to get him.
  8. Both coordinators will be retained. RB coach is off to Texas and our oline coach and assistant DB coach are out.
  9. If he is, it won't be as OC. Fox evidently retaining all of the main coordinators. Oline / RB coach are out along with an assistant RB coach.
  10. Hopefully we reach the right conclusions based upon this great opportunity.
  11. What exactly does Talyor do? He clearly isn't a good starter and if we are going to stopgap, why not just stick with Hoyer, who knows the system? I see no reason to look at Taylor. We know what he is, so spending money on him solves nothing.
  12. The key to me is if we can get him for a late 1st, ideally a 2nd and a 3rd day pick (if we say made a deal with the Browns for their 10th pick plus some other good picks and could maneuver to where the positioning made sense). We can't just ignore the QB position, because if we do that, we have zero chance of getting better, so when I look at the landscape, I think Jimmy makes by far the most sense. The next most logical answer to me would be Tony Romo as a stopgap which gives you time to play around with some "flyer" QB's or to wait another year to address (there is obviously health risk though). Jimmy G though has much greater odds to me of being solid to good then any other QB available (with exception of Romo...and that is a short-lived window or Cousins, who probably won't be available and is clearly not ever going to be elite, although he is a solid starter). And I don't know that any of us want to be picking in the top 3 2 or 3 season from now, and that is really the only way to get the slam duck franchise QB (who still has major bust risk) and maybe next years draft would have it (USC's QB) but who knows. This years QB crop, on paper looks very weak. Of course, if Pace and company look at any of the QB's in the draft and think they see the guy, clearly they need to take them. We can't ignore QB this year and we can't just use a "flyer" pick on a QB. We either bring in a veteran who can help us contend now (and focus everything else on building an elite D) or you go a route that you think can get you a franchise QB (cause it takes time to see if that player will pan out or not anyway). Look at the Rams, they waited and waited and then when they finally couldn't wait anymore, they jumped for Goff, ugh.
  13. A few things to remember...it is easy to say that it is just the system or that he is the next Cassel, but Cassel was projected to be a clipboard holding backup at best (very late round pick who barely played in college at USC). Jimmy G was a 2nd round pick who many scouts thought had 1st round talent. He has shown nothing (albeit in flashes) to deny that talent. Yes, he was raw and hard to grade out because he played against lesser competition, but he could have also learned quite a few good things from playing behind and being mentored by Brady. Cassel, while not great, wasn't exactly the worst player in the league and had some successful seasons with the Chiefs. We are a long ways away from solving the problem, but I think using a 2nd round pick plus something else (if the Pats would bite on it) is a much better roll of the dice then the alternative (and going with a rookie QB). A lot of smart people have said if Jimmy G was in this years draft, he'd be a clear cut #1 overall pick. He very well could end up sucking, but he not only did he put up very very good numbers, he also looked the part. Reality is QB is a crapshoot and I think the odds of Jimmy G panning out are much greater then any of the QB's in this years draft class. I also think Jimmy G is ready to plug and play today, which actually speeds up the entire rebuilt process and could get the Bears on the fast track much sooner. In an ideal world, we'd move down in the draft, stock up some more picks, and use the stocked up picks to get Jimmy G while then leveraging our typical picks to fill other needs (plus be smart in free agency).
  14. I'm hoping we bring in Mike McCoy as the offensive coordinator.
  15. Not interested. Only QB's I'd have some interest in are Romo, Cousins, Jimmy G (who could be available). that is in no particular order.
  16. Yeah...Bears shouldn't belong on the list. It isn't like we had a bunch of probowlers on the injury list. Yes, injuries impacted this team, but we have no idea who our QB is and have plenty of other glaring holes (not to mention the fact that we can't generate any turnovers) and I don't see enough guys you project magically getting better next year to totally turn the cards. I'm not saying we can't make the playoffs, but as of now, I don't see us having a good chance next year.
  17. We have no secondary and still a pretty non-existent pass rush (yes we got plenty of sacks and Floyd is emerging, but he is the only real guy who has shown high upside potential on the defense). Other guys are solid players and we didn't see enough of Goldman (who seems like a potential high impact guy) due to injuries. We have plenty of other solid players but still some major voids and that is really evident in the fact that we can't force any freaking turnovers. I see us a number of playmakers away from being a top 5 defense. It could happen, but it would take a pretty miraculous offseason, imo.
  18. If one thing is clear, Barkley is not a starter. He could be a solid backup but even that he hasn't proved. As the league got film on him, he got worse and worse. Just a turnover machine without the arm. Old Greg Gabriel was right when he kept telling people the guy probably isn't even a good backup. I'd still keep him around (at least for training camp) and let him battle it out, but I certainly would expect Hoyer to be the starter on opening day (unless we go after Jimmy G or Tony Romo or Cousins). If it is a draft pick, I presume they won't be starting day 1. Barkley absolutely shouldn't be the opening day starter (not based upon what he showed).
  19. I thought Pryor was a free agent? he's probably the one wideout I'd be interested in. I think he's got some real upside.
  20. Pretty spot-on assessment.
  21. None of the other Patriots "backup's" were 2nd round draft picks though. In terms of your comparison to Wilson, I won't say the two are identical, but they definitely have similarities. Russell never wows you, but the total package works very well and I feel the same way, long term with Dak. He clearly benefits from the oline and running game, kind of like Wilson benefited from having such an elite defense (and for a while Lynch).
  22. So I am sure all of us have heard by now about how Cre'von LeBlanc has been absolutely dominating practices since the Bears picked him up from the Patriots (especially in the takeaway department) and we all know about his pick six in last weeks game, but some analytics point out that his actual production the past 4 weeks has been "elite". Thought it was an interesting read and I've definitely seen a lot of positives out of him (not to say he hasn't had some rookie mistakes as well). Given the major need in the secondary, would be huge turn LeBlanc into a starting corner or better yet a well above average corner. I know I have seen some recent gripes on here about our DB coach, Donatel, but he is widely regarded as one of the best in the business and like Fangio has done for this entire defense, I'm impressed what Donatel has gotten out of such an unknown group of defensive backs (none of which have been high picks...with the exception of Fuller who is finally back from injury).
  23. Ditto...my preferred route would be to trade a 2nd for Jimmy G. I'd then trade down a few slots in the first to get that 2nd round pick back.
