New GM's thoughts on draft w/ a lame duck coach....
adam replied to ASHKUM BEAR's topic in Bearstalk
Sorry to revive this post, but it fun to see you taking Alshon in the 1st and Arthur Brown in the 4th, whom we might select this year. I was looking for last year's mocks to see how we did. -
If we draft any LB's to play the middle, it at least has to be one of the following: Ogletree, Brown, Teo, Minter, or Reddick.
-
Nice try, but not enough wow factor. Something like he was traded for Carson Palmer and picks would've been better, or that we extended him for Romo-type money. I pinned it, hopefully that will help.
-
This is Cutler's last stand. If he can't put up top 10 QB stats, with the Bears making a solid playoff run, I can't see Emery extending/re-signing him. He basically has to have his best season with the Bears to instill any confidence in the organization.
-
Well they just didn't change the pick numbers, but the order seems to be correct. I don't like the picks though.

Also, another interesting thing about some of the contracts is that they are using the "Minimum Salary Benefit Rule". We have saved almost a million dollars in cap space over the last 5 contracts (before Slauson and McCown): Hayden - $905,000 - $285,000 savings - $620,000 cap hit Bowman - $780,000 - $160,000 savings - $620,000 cap hit Scott - $780,000 - $160,000 savings - $620,000 cap hit McBride - $715,000 - $160,000 savings - $555,000 cap hit Zbikowski - $715,000 - $160,000 savings - $555,000 cap hit 5 contracts, $925k savings The Minimum Salary Benefit:

Backup QB solidified? Blanchard the #3?
-
Williams basically didn't play last year so that comparison is ridiculous. That's like comparing their 09-10 campaign, Urlacher had 3 tackles to Williams 100. The numbers don't tell the whole story. Also, just because you have high numbers doesn't necessarily show how many you missed or were broken. Sure Urlacher's numbers were down due to injury and age, but Williams was suspended, which in a way benefited his body with less wear and tear last year. Urlacher rebounded with a great year in 2010-11, and Williams should trend the same way this year.

Another great signing. Bushrod and Slauson on the left side will really solidify pass protection. Now if we do draft an OG or OC, this line is going to be really solid in complete contrast to the last couple of seasons. He graded out great for pass protection which is amazing considering he was blocking for Sanchez. Also, for his run blocking, how much of that was because he was blocking for Greene who took an hour to hit the hole?

How about comparing Anderson to Roach for the last 2 years: Anderson - 98, 39 Roach - 31, 51 Also, Anderson missed 4 games due to injury.
-
Several? Essentially 2 new starting LB's and a backup Safety/ST is several? Also, these guys are coming in from similar schemes, so learning curves will be much smaller. Also, both Williams and Anderson are vets who should be able to adjust pretty quickly. I don't see this as a rebuild. That would be a year where we cut or trade Peppers, Briggs, Tillman, Jennings, Cutler, and Marshall; pick up a slew of draft picks and start over.
-
I would say we are better in two ways, first on the field Williams/Anderson will be better than Urlacher/Roach. Secondly, the cost of Williams/Anderson is lower than Urlacher/Roach thus allowing the Bears to use the savings to improve elsewhere.
-
That's silly, there is no way that will happen. We are going OG, LB, and CB with at least 3 of our picks. Then probably WR, DT, C.

We won 10 last year and this team is better. Just replacing Davis with Bennett is worth 1-2 games, Davis was that bad. 1. We had a horrible line last year and won 10, our line is better and will improve even more after the draft. 2. Bushrod will be better than Webb, and Kromer will be better than Tice 3. Jeffery just needs to stay healthy 4. I don't think McClellin's sack total is going to impact the team win total that much, as long as he improves we will be good. He had a bunch of hurries, and hopefully those will start turning into sacks this year. 5. Every team does, don't see how this is any different this year than any other year. 6. Absolutely, but I like his chances better with Trestman/Kromer than Lovie/Insert OC. 7. He missed one game last year and we won that game? Again, of course health is paramount, but every team has to worry about that. 8. Bennett will surpass Davis' full season production by Week 4 or 5. I don't see Earl Bennett's production being that important, especially with Martellus' added production. 9. Absolutely, but he wasn't last year and we still won 10 games 10. The way this is setting up, it looks like we can basically go BPA and get at least 2 impact players (one being a OG). For me, most of those are not "if's", every team has questions in various positions and injury concerns. Also, we seem to be better off than most teams, especially with depth. Once the interior line hole is filled, it is hard to see any true weaknesses. To me, we are going in the right direction, and from a 10 win season, that would seem to be an 11-12 win campaign.
-
I would say we are now an 11 to 12 win team. The best part is GB seems to have slipped a little while we have gained. With a good draft we will be right there neck and neck with them. As much leadership that we lost with Urlacher they lost with Woodson and Jennings.
-
Anderson had a great interview on Sirius today. Totally forgot about the Peppers connection from CAR. I really believe he is going to have a great season.
-
Was it one year for 4 million? If so, I don't think we had the space for that.
-
"Campbell drops back and throws over the middle to Kellen Davis, the ball is a little high, tipped by Davis, and ooooohhhh, it is Intercepted"
-
It is debatable, I am sure there may be others, but his two season total of 37 receptions and 435 yards, in 32 games averages out to be just over 1 reception a game for 13 yards. That was with 78 targets. They were almost better off throwing the ball out of bounds 78 times, as he caused multiple INTs with his drops.
-
That is what Ozzie Newsome says, very true.
-
There is a possibility that some players may have been turned off by how the Bears handled the Urlacher situation, but that seems to be the trend with aging vets. It is more of a business now than it ever has been.
-
Hilarious. That was really funny. Loved his shirt too, Exercise to Eggs are sides for BACON! Witt Cassel?

Yeah, this is another solid signing/re-signing by Emery. I still think the first two picks are from this pool: (OG, WR, LB, CB).
