I think in the case of a draft pick you can. They are not trading for a known commodity like the Bears did with Cutler. RGIII is awesome, and I love him as a player and hope he has a great career, but you can't mortgage that much of your future to get one guy. The way I see it, the draft is where you get value on your team with the new salary constraints for rookies. Basically Washington is doing that, but only at the QB position, and they were not just one player away from being a contender. Instead of having cheap talent, like Denver, they will have to find everything else thru FA, which you can only do so much with the cap. That division is pretty brutal with NYG, DAL, and PHI to play 6 times a year. They would've been better served to draft Tannehill at #6 (or even later for that matter) and keep their future picks to build around him.

Except when your first pick in the draft for the next two years is 47th-52nd. I don't like the deal for Washington to give up that much for so long just to move up 4 spots. Take the player out of the equation, they are giving up 2 firsts and a second to move up 4 spots this year.

Ok, his base salary was $10.75 for this year, that entire amount would have been a cap hit. They reduce it to $1.75 million with $9 million as a bonus, still totalling the same amount paid to him. So $1.75 + $9 = $10.75, the same amount. However, they can now apply the $9 million bonus over the remaining 4 years of the contract ($2.25million per year) So this year's cap hit will be: $1.75 Base Salary (new amount) $2.25 Pro-rated Bonus ($9 million spread over 4 years) ------- $4.00 Million Cap hit So they started with a $10.75 million cap hit and reduced it to $4 million, saving $6.75 million in cap space for this year.

I wouldn't say it is significant, normally a couple of million depending on how creative they are on the salaries. If the base for this year is only $1 mill, then the cap hit could be down to $5 with the $4 million applied annually.

For Vincent Jackson, he has a few killer stats: 83% of his catches go for a 1st Down, and he only has one fumble in his entire career. Besides the 3 out last 4 years with a 1,000 yards and averaging 18 a catch and 8 TDs.

So you can easily name 9-19 better WR's than Jackson? He may not be in the top 5, but he is definitely in that next group of WR's and I would definitely consider him a top 10 talent at that position.

It depends on what the salary is each year. So they may sign him to a 5/40 with a 20 mil signing bonus. If his salaries were 2, 2, 4, 4, and 8 mil; then the cap hits would be: 6, 6, 8, 8, 12 mil with the bonus or guaranteed money ($4 mil per year) pro-rated over the life of the deal. In reality they are paying him $22 mil this year, but only $6 mil counts against the cap. After that point, they can release him at anytime, but would take a cap hit immediately for the remainder of the bonus that was not yet applied to the cap. So if Forte was released after year 3, they Bears would have a cap hit of $8 mil in year 4 without Forte, but would not incur anything in year 5. So to Forte, he could essentially double or triple his guaranteed money with a new deal compared to the $7.7 he is getting now. A new deal, with creative salaries also could reduce the cap hit for the first few years compared to the franchise value at RB.

I would think we are the most attractive location out of those three for a WR looking to play on a championship caliber team and with a franchise QB. Minnesota and Jacksonville both have question marks at QB and their teams are not really contenders.

Interesting to note that neither Jackson nor Bowe have been hit with the franchise tag yet.

I was just thinking of one of the two would be great. Then add someone like Carlson as TE and get a mid-tier FA for the other area of need (OL or WR) that you didn't fill and we would be set for the draft.

How much of $7.7 is guaranteed? I am assuming it all is and that would be a 7.7 cap hit this year if they can't work out a long term deal.

After the first round, it is a crapshoot to predict the draft. I doubt any of those picks will be correct. It is fun to look at the mocks, but looking back at past mocks, very few got many players right, especially after the first round - and before free agency. At this point, I am just hoping for BPA from a need area for all of our picks and with no injury risk or history (and no reaches or projects).

I don't know how feasible that would be. Even if we miss on one of the Tier 1 Free Agents for a #1 WR, I still think we will pick up a WR via FA, but it might only be a #2. Then we draft a WR at #19 as our #1. Drafting two doesn't seem realistic with the other areas we need to address, especially with youth.
