Done Deal. Bears signed him to a 1 year contract. Still won't be ready for a few weeks though.
-
Easy for him to say that now. Lets see how that muscle feels when he actually attempts to take snaps, change directions, and load off that back foot to make a pass. I'd be shocked if he plays before the 4 weeks are up, and even then it's not a given. Then once he gets on the field, how productive will he be? Usually takes several weeks after coming back before you can get back to form, if at all. Since this is a contract year for Cutler, you can bet he's going to make every attempt to get back on the field as fast as he can.

I don't know why I like McCaron, but I just do. Smart, accurate, nice delivery, good mechanics.. He wouldn't be in my top 5 wish list for quarterbacks, but as a 3rd rounder? Could do worse. Johnny is another guy that is a risk as a 1st round pick, not because of his ability, but because of his size and off-field issues. Kid is about as high risk/high reward as they come. I would not cross him off my list, though.

Just going by the eye test, the line has been slowly getting worse as the season goes on. 2nd worst? Nah. I haven't paid that much attention to Jordan Mills individually, but it's hard for me to believe he's the worst RT in all of football. I don't see it. Bushrod on the other hand, has been exactly what I've expected coming into the season. He's a stop gap LT. Within the next two years, Kyle Long will move over to that spot and will play well.

I see 3 more wins minimum with McCown. Vikings, Browns, and Rams.. Possibly the Ravens. If we lose any of those games against the first three teams, we'll be drafting in the top 10 this year. Hard to see the Bears, even with all the injuries, not be able to pull out wins against Brandon Weeden, Josh Freeman, and god knows what in St Louis.

He was disruptive enough to consistently bring double teams. Without that guy, Melton's numbers don't look as good, and I'm not convinced he would have played nearly as good this year, had he been healthy, without Peppers commanding doubles. I've always felt like Melton's pass rushing ability was overrated. You are probably not going to find many teams throwing money at Melton this year while he's recovering from ACL surgery. The Bears shouldn't either. Only way I would keep him around is if the contract is cap friendly, and still allows us to sign other guys who fill needs. Quite frankly, I'm sick of 3 technique crap anyways. If you can find me the next Tommie Harris, I'll take him, but otherwise get me a bunch of fatties that can clog the middle and allow the young LB'ers to have free reign to make tackles.

I would most definitely not re-sign Henry Melton. I wasn't in favor of giving him the franchise tag this year because his success at DT was heavily reliant upon Julius Peppers being his usual disruptive self taking on double teams. He's not a Nhdamakung Suh that can dominate a game by himself. Now he's coming off season ending ACL surgery. Doesn't make any sense to me to re-sign him now.

Michael C Wright just trolled everybody..

Yeah, Greg Jennings came back from the same injury last year and wasn't the same player. Amendola this year has sucked after coming back from a torn groin. My initial reaction to the "4 weeks" news was relief, but it is very possible that he's not going to be nearly as effective when he does come back. The only positive is that it wasn't a complete tear that would have required him to miss the rest of the season + part of next year, which could have ruined his career.

The Bears have many different ways they can approach the offseason, but I've condensed it down to 3. #1- Partial rebuild - Keep offensive personel the same - Use draft picks to rebuild the defense - Cut ties with Melton and Peppers to free up a little money to franchise Cutler and perhaps re-sign Jennings and Tillman to modest deals. - Compete next season #2- 3/4 rebuild - Cut ties with Cutler, Melton, and Peppers - Draft a QB in round 1 - Use the rest of the picks for defense - Attempt to compete next season with a young QB, expect growing pains (fringe playoff team with the arrow pointing ^^) #3- Complete rebuild - Cut/trade everybody (Briggs, Tillman, Jennings, Melton, Cutler, Peppers, Marshall etc..) - Stockpile draft picks - Draft a QB in round 1 - Suck for another year, but use two drafts to brighten your future with young, talented players.
-
That is much better than what I expected. If he only misses 3 games with that injury, I don't know how you can be anything but relieved. I was thinking he'd be out bare minimum 8-10 weeks.
-
Interesting.. I hope it's Mel Tucker, but I seriously doubt it.
-
The good news is that he doesn't require surgery, but the bad is that the Bears will be without their best LB'er for atleast a month. This hasn't been a good last 24 hours for Bears fans.

If Cutler's season is over, what do you do next year?

I like the idea of a safety, but if the Bears choose to let Cutler walk, a QB is a MUST in round 1, assuming the ones available are worth taking in the 1st round. -

Combination of good play calling, terrible defense, and lack of preparation for a Josh McCown lead offense, as opposed to a Cutler-lead one. I still think McCown can be serviceable enough to win a few games, but I don't see him replicating his 119.6 QB Rating many more times the rest of the year once teams start preparing for him. -
He played okay in Mike Shanahan's west coast scheme. Brett Favre thrived under Mike Holmgren's WCO as a renown gunslinger. Hell, Cutler was playing the best football of his career before going down with this injury. I don't think the scheme is a problem. I actually think it's ideal for him, because it encourages him to get rid of the ball quicker and establish a rhythm instead of throwing down the field so much and taking more chances with interceptions.

Prior to this most recent injury, I was leaning towards that way. I, personally, have never been sold on Cutler as a franchise quarterback, but I've always said you might as well keep him around until you can find a better alternative. If he doesn't play another snap the rest of the year, that changes things dramatically because the Bears will be drafting inside the top 15, which gives you a better opportunity to draft that potential "Franchise" QB. -

They signed him like 5 seconds after the game got over today. -

Bridgewater, Boyd, Hundley, Manziel, Mariotta all look like first round picks right now. Bridgewater probably goes #1 or #2. If the Bears could get one of those guys.. I also like the Price kid from Washington as a prospect later in the draft. -
I though Bass had a few nice pressures, but other than that, they got man handled by the read option and Jordan Reed in the passing game. In my opinion, this was their worst performance on D, followed by the Lions game.
-
When would that be? I thought it was easily their worst defensive performance of the year.
-
The offense did seem to open up a lot more with McCown at QB over Cutler, which seemed odd. They ran more screens today than they have all season combined. I don't know if that was the plan going into the game, or because they didn't want McCown to have to throw the ball down field like Cutler is capable of doing.

I agree. If he's done for an extended period of time, it might be time to move on to somebody else. Can you really re-sign him to a long term deal after coming back from a serious injury (hypothetically speaking)? I don't think you can. I don't know if a franchise tag would even be worth it at that point. He'll be 32 years old after next season, and is now building up a history of injuries. The thumb, the concussions, the knee, and now the groin. I think they should draft a young QB early in the draft anyways, regardless of this injury, but If the plan is to move on from Cutler, you really need to draft one in the 1st round. -
With the news that they already have signed Jordan Palmer, you have to believe the outlook for Cutler's injury is not good. They are saying he was moaning in pain, and couldn't even walk to the locker room when he got into the tunnel. If he's out for the year, what do you do next season at quarterback?
-
You really think he can hold that up week after week after teams get more film on him? They also won't be playing the Redskins defense every week either, so I have to take that into account.
