Before anyone suggests this is a 'jinx' let me first say such a notion is entirely nonsense. Atleast from the position of an anonymous fan on a message board.
I ask because, when the White Sox were in the World Series, I seriously couldn't envision life in the event they had fallen short. Not that I would have ended it ( ), but just the possibility of having to deal with my favorite team reaching the pinnacle of their sport, only to fall short, was a scenario my brain couldn't conceptualize.
Think about it -- recently Chicagoans haven't had to experience a championship letdown. 2003 NLCS aside, both Bulls and Sox have provided this city with teams who finished the job upon reaching the 'big' game. Just imagine, for a second, the enormous letdown following a loss. I honestly don't know how people would react. Does it seem like a Chicago response to cheer the Bears at Midway (or O'Hare) if the Lombardi trophy isn't accompanying them? Sounds more like something you'd expect out of California, or Florida. I personally believe if Grossman has a poor performance during a loss, he might as well stay in Miami. His ass will be BURIED in this town.
For baseball fans such as myself, Spring Training could serve as necessary solitude in the event our worst dreams come true. But for the true football fans, some perhaps posting on this board, where football is first and foremost their prefered sport -- I hope you have an additional activity to relieve the pain.
Although none of this will be necessary, since the Bears will win.
