Not as silly as his response lol. I wonder what a 33 year old Briggs fetches the bears. 3rd round pick? I wouldn't HATE the idea of trading him, esp. if they feel like they already have his predecessor on the team. Adds 6.5M to the cap pot.
-
I get the "sour grapes" but trade all the picks?? c'mon Lance, that's silly. Tillman's still a possibility. But I understand letting a player go before it's to late I reckon. Peppers was just turrable last year and at 14M it's just a bad investment. People need to let go of Urlacher. Hester doesn't help the D, so ya, not sure why he's included when talking about the D.
-
Ya I really think, even with the injury, he's gonna get 5M from someone if he hits the open market....Dude was a pro bowler just a year ago.

Moon posted this earlier... John Mullin @CSNMoonMullin 3h #Bears question w/ DT Henry Melton: would u draft a DT rehabbing ACL tear? would you pay him $2M UFA? #BearsTalk http://bit.ly/1ijdi6M If Melton's really only gonna cost 2M, which if he hits the market I doubt, sign me up. At 2M I think it's possible to sign both him and Bennett. I love Aaron Donald, but in some of the latest mocks I've seen him go 12th to the Giants and 11th to the Titans. The SI mock added that it wouldn't surprise anyone if he goes in the top 10. It might be wise not to count on him being there like I have been.

Since PFF is kinda my thing around these parts, ya I've seen it, but didn't post it since at this point I think it's pretty much irrelevant. That's the projected lineup for what we had signed which was basically nothing. I will however go ahead and disagree with some projections (yes, you read that right, I'm disagreeing with PFF). I agree that Bostic was a poor starter, but I still project him as more than a below average starter. I can imagine it was hard to project based on what we saw on the field, but based on his preseason, when he got some snaps behind an adequate line he looked like he'd be at the very least an "adequate starter". I'd also probably throw a yellow ring around Frey as well based on what we saw in preseason. I also think Long was solid with a chance to be a "high quality" starter.

Those 2 contracts(Bennett and Marshalls) may be a bit too high but you gotta factor in that the cap will be 7 million dollars higher next year and another 10 million dollars higher the following year. That's a TON of money. But yeah, at least for Bennett, I'm now thinking the Bears could end up throwing a big signing bonus his way to lessen the cap number like what they did with Bushrod and Bennett.
-
The 2012 team had Conte/Wright and still ranked 5th defensively. Good corners are an absolute must, esp. in todays NFL. I don't even think it's wise to have 1 average one, a lot of good duos out there..... Speaking of rumors and WR duos Detroit is rumored to be highly interested in Sammy Watkins. That's fuckin scary. Watkins probably won't be there but if they still decide to take a WR like Mike Evans those guys can be really scary.
-
Good CBs? Absolutely. Good safeties? Debatable. I'll always come back to the 2012 team when it comes to the safety argument.

I didn't read anywhere where he said they will be going after VALUE vs quality. He didn't say the opposite either. The article was just talking about FA in general. I did like the Cash vs Cap section though. I think the Bears can do something like this again with Bennett. For those who don't wanna read the article I'll pull the part I'm talking about. in 2013, Bushrod was 11th on the Bears in terms of his cap number of $3.015 million ($2.2 million prorated signing bonus + $715K base salary + $100K workout bonus), but was second on the team in terms of his cash number of $11.815 million ($11 million signing bonus + $715K base salary + $100K workout bonus). Throw Bennett a huge signing bonus, while keeping his cap number at a respectable number in the 5-7 range and boom, no problems with the cap.
-
And why the hell wouldn't they dip into it for 2 mill? lol the way I see it the less they have to the better. There's literally no reason why they wouldn't. That makes zero sense. The money for Bennett is without question there...After I broke it down I'm surprised this is even a dispute.
-
Gah, could you imagine going from Seattle to one of those teams??? Hopefully he cares about winning as well as the big money the Bears can offer him. A subliminal message from Marty???? Martellus Bennett @MartysaurusRex 9m So @mosesbread72 and I may have a new tv show airing Monday. Or we may not. Stay tuned.

He'll have competition on the open market. Broncos don'r wanna pay Trindon Holiday 1.3M to come back despite him having 6 returns for TDs the last 2 years. Kinda tells you how much teams value returners if they don't wanna pay the dude a measly 1.3 mill. I haven't got in on this convo because I'm not one for nostalgia...Though Jason did make a compelling argument on him being more than just nostalgic when he brought up his stats from this year. Since Chris Williams was signed during the season I wonder if they saw enough of him in practice to know he's capable.
-
Nothing changes is you have the money. And they do... No chance that's how low it goes. I think he'll get around 8M in year 1 but it'll increase every year after that which I don't think is a problem at all. Esp. when you factor in the cap going up another 7M next year and another 10 after that. PLUS the Bears cap number for next year right now is 82M. Nearly 60M under the cap. the 12M i suggested in year 2 is nothing. I've never said anything about taking 10M out, I said 2, which isn't shit.

I know what your point is but you also just contradicted it by saying we need to look at more than one thing. That list is filled with studs and Hughes who had 10 sacks in 228 less snaps than Hardy. Again all that list is is about percentages. I kinda look at sacks as a home run. Adam Dunn was 4th in the league in home runs last year yet over half the fan base wants him gone. Sacks and home runs are both sexy stats but I'll take the guy who gets on base more or gets disrupts the QB more. While Greg Hardy may have more "home runs" than Bennett and Hughes, the last 2 got on base more consistently when they had playing time.

I edited the original post, I think he and Lane just battle for a spot on the team. Would love for one of them, Bass, or Washington to surprise me and be more than just depth. He did have that one good year in Oakland awhile back with 40 somethin tackles and 7 sacks so who knows. Hope he's put on a little weight since 2008 because ya 256 is a little undersized.
-
Had a good year in 2009 but has fell of since. Started 2 games 2 years ago for the Pats, recorded 3 sacks. No question a vet min deal which doesn't hurt. Probably competes with Austin Lane for a spot on the team.

Indeed, and the 2.5M I was guessing was his cap number. Michael C Wright just told me that based on his contract he thinks his cap hit will be around 1.4, which would be fantastic for what he can potentially bring. If he's right, and they decide to bring back Collins that's potentially 2 solid guys signed for under 2M in cap space. My hopes is they add Donald who would cost them 1.7M and then a 5th round run stuffer who will cost them 467k.....DT would be fixed for just over 4M.
-
Not sure where they got the numbers since none of our beat guys have said anything but per rotoworld Bears re-signed DT Jay Ratliff to a two-year, $4 million contract with $600,000 guaranteed. I was expecting no more than 2.5 so 2M is a great deal in my eyes. EDIT- Michael C Wright has confirmed it.
-
Ya, if we continue to play with 2 deep safeties they won't have much of an impact in the run game. If those guys cheat up then teams will exploit that over the top. I still can't think of a team that had an "average" DL but a top notch secondary that had "great success". Seahawks DL made over 30 million dollars last year. Brandon Mebane- 5M Chris Clemons- 7.3 Red Bryant- 7 Cliff Avril- 6.5 Michael Bennett- 4.8
-
I absolutely agree with the bold statement, and that's exactly what I'm doing.....You apparently don't though since all you're looking at is sack numbers, so where's you're logic?
-
The stat is all relative to percentages. Let me try to simplify this a bit. Hardy played 806 snaps that's 50 snaps a game. Hughes played 228 less snaps, so it's kinda like Hardy played in 4 and half more games right? Well looking at Hughes game log there was a 4 game span where he had 5 sacks. If he duplicates that then BOOM they have the same amount of sacks. And I'm just looking at sacks here because that's what you're saying makes you elite. It should be pretty easy to comprehend. I know you said you're a Sox fan, so you apparently follow a little baseball. Are you familiar with sabermetrics? What PFF does is pretty much the sabermetrics of the NFL. If you don't know what sabermetrics is, have you seen the movie Moneyball? That's basically what that movie is about.
-
Jerry Hughes had a a really good year. If you wanna look at sacks instead of pressures, Hughes had 10 sacks in 578 snaps, whereas Greg Hardy who you might call elite because his 15 sacks were 3rd in the league, played 806 snaps. Had they played the same amount of snaps Hughes could be right up there with him. Who do you think lead the team in pressures? In a recent Biggs article he said Peppers only had 15.
-
But..but... Brad Biggs thinks we'll be in on Bennett/Johnson/Houston....=p just messin with you. They'd have the money but that's not where they need to invest. Should be BS
-
Uhh no, it means our DL wasnt any good.. 1 Jerry Hughes BUF 305 59 15.4 2 Robert Quinn SL 477 91 15.3 3 Aldon Smith SF 289 55 15.1 3 Elvis Dumervil BLT 319 61 15.1 3 Justin Houston KC 332 59 14.1 6 Cameron Wake MIA 397 71 14.0 7 Michael Bennett SEA 379 65 13.5 8 Von Miller DEN 234 38 12.8 9 Tamba Hali KC 500 77 12.2 10 Greg Hardy CAR 536 82 12.1 are you telling me those guys aren't any good? Before you say anything about Jerry Hughes being on top of the list dude had 10 sacks as a backup.
-
All PFF is look at the important things that don't show in the stat sheet. I know their pressures stat has been questioned here but oh well....Bennett ranked 7th in pass rush percentage, Robert Mathais who led the league in sacks didn't make the top 10. Greg Hardy ranked 10th.
