That it is, and you're right, it's hard for a rookie to come in and take command in year 1. Bostic could develop into that guy in year 2. Why would it be different if they draft Mosely, whom you've touted quite a bit, Just give me the most talented player in the draft, if they're considered a "leader" well I guess that's a plus.

I'm sad no one took the bait =(

That would be impressive considering Williams was just .5 sacks behind Jason Hatcher for the most sacks by a DT this year and last year Atkins was 6th in the whole league in sacks (Not just DTs, he had the most among DTs).

PFT: Marc Trestman: Our draft will focus on defense
scs787 replied to madlithuanian's topic in Bearstalk
He wasn't a reach....if we ran a 3-4 lol....Looking at Mayocks top 100 from 2012 it makes me a little sad Shea to see that he was ranked 14th overall but as an OLB. He was even one of 2 guys Mayock specifically brought up when talking about the most impressive guys at the combine. If only we ran a 3-4. -
I can't find his official measurements, but one article said he was 302 his rookie year so it's probably around there. Donald gets compared to Geno Atkins a lot....Atkins was 6'1" 293 with 32 inch arms. So Donald is 8 pounds lighter and his arms are 5/8 of an inch longer. Kyle Williams is another 6'1" pro bowler who had 32 inch arms. He was 299. So he's a little thinner than those guys but not by much. I had been comparing him to Dorsey in the past but just found out dude had 35 inch arms at 6'1"

How bout this guy??? "I can tell you that since the coaches have started to get involved in the evaluation process, this kid's slowly risen." -- Mike Mayock "Blank was one of the true veteran leaders" "Blank is an aggression setter" "Vocal leader that moves teammates to their correct spots." "his production, onfield attitude and instincts for the ball make him a potential mid-round pick and gives him a chance to eventually earn a starting job at the next level."

Walterfootball just released the combine measurements for the DL prospects so I figured I'd highlight some of the guys we've talked about. Jadaveon Clowney- 6-5 266 34 1/2 inch arms- I put him up there as sort of a measuring stick. Kony Ealy- 6-4 273 34 1/4- Pretty much right there with Clowney Kareem Martin- 6-6 272 35- The knock on this guy is his speed, he's projected to run a 4.9 while Ealy is expected to be in the 4.7 range. If he beats those projections he could work his way into 1st round consideration Dee Ford- 6-2 252 32 7/8- Short with short arms, further adding to my thought that he's not a 4-3 DE and the Bears won't draft him. Jackson Jeffcoat- 6-3 247 33 7/8- Really thin for a DE, projected to run in the high 4.7s, probably needs to put on 20 pounds if he wants to stay at DE which probably ups his 40 into the 4.8s. Trent Murphy- 6-5 250 33 7/8- Actually worked out with the LBs, at his weight that's probably where he's best suited anyway. Scott Crichton- 6-3 273 32 3/4- Added him since stinger just brought him up in another thread...Shorter than ideal arms...not a fan. Unless Martin comes out and runs in at least the low 4.8s I don't think there's another guy who can be on Ealys level...If the Bears need a DE I really hope Ealy is there. DTs Timmy Jernigan- 6-2 299 31 5/8- Seems like everyone here is split between him and Donald here. Aaron Donald- 6-1 285 32 5/8- A lot of people tab him as too small, but he's just an inch shorter and his arms are an inch longer than Timmy. I'd rather have the guy with the longer arms. Ra'shede Hageman 6-6 310 34 1/4- Thought his arms would be a bit longer. Intriguing length, wouldn't hate the pick but his inconsistency in college worries me a bit. Stephon Tuit- 6-5 304 34 1/2- See above Only went with the guys we've talked about a lot here....here's the whole list http://walterfootball.com/combine2014DL.php Monday is when the DL runs their 40 times and such, would be nice to keep it all in this thread.

If he's there, and the Bears have a hole at DE, he absolutely should be the pick. If they bring back the guys you said and cut Pep they'd still have a hole. Hell, I wouldn't hate to see him be the pick even if Wootton and a FA DE are brought in because I'm not 100% sold on Wootton yet. Corey could end up being quality depth in the Izzy DE/DT role.
-
Agreed with everything you said here. Sign both of these guys for cheap and go with a 2nd or 3rd round CB and they should be set with Jennings-Rookie-Frey-Bowman-Hayden. Bowman competes with the rook and Hayden competes with Frey.
-
It does seem a little strange to talk about bringing back a buncha guys we already had, but look at who we're mostly talking about...Melton, Ratliff, and Wootton are the 3 guys that get talked about the most. Melton was pretty much hurt all year, Ratliff was hurt for 3/4 of the season, and Wootton played out of position. The hope is they come back healthy, and in Wootton's case goes back to the position where he looked like he could be pretty good at. Tyler Clutts is the FB you're thinking of and he was actually cut by the Dolphins last year (then picked up by Dallas) Only other guy that come to mind are Greg Olson and Corey Graham.
-
Eh, idk, it's possible, I just think that guy is Kony Ealy if he's there. Ealy scouting report from nfldraftscout..... If he's there how do you pass on that? Perhaps if Ealy's gone or the Bears have traded down maybe Phil and company fall in love with a guy like Trent Murphy, Kareem Martin, or Jackson Jeffcoat and take them in the first so they don't miss out on them in the 2nd.
-
Melton was a pro bowler in 2012, was a pro bowl snub the year before and he's still in his prime, saying he's the #3 DT like it's a bad thing is kinda silly. He's not what you would call elite, but he is really good. He wouldn't really be viewed as a "splashy" signing here but that's essentially what he'd be should they resign him. I also disagree about Peppers, I put him in the same category as Jared Allen who doesn't even show up in the top 10 despite racking up 11.5 sacks. Other than that your post does hold some truth to it since it's somewhat rare for elite players to hit the market.

?? WF has 3 different mocks, none have them taking Mosley... Lol where'd the PFF comment come from. They don't need to fool anyone if it's Dee Ford that they want, he might not even go in the first round.
-
I'd be a little shocked if he isn't brought back. He won't be that expensive for what he can bring if healthy, and he can play both the 3 and 1 tech.
-
He's 6'2" 240, I highly doubt it after the comments Phil made about size and length.
-
We keep hearing good stuff about Boggs, and with Kromer being able to develop "low end" talent I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes that guy. I also believe in Kromers ability to get a rookie to handle a starting role, see Long/Mills, so with the deficiency on the defensive side of the ball I say just go with Garza/Boggs this year then a rookie next year.
-
Meh. If Garza is back I don't think they should go center that early, and if they bring back Boggs I'm not sure they'll go with one at all. I'd also probably just go with one or the other with Desir and McGill, esp if they bring back Tillman like you kinda suggested. CB depth isn't a bad thing, at all, but they'd then have Tillman-Jennings-Frey-Desir-Mcgill-CJ Wilson. All while, depending on what they do in FA, lacking depth on the DL.
-
While true, the problem there is finding one in this draft. Past Clowney, who won't be there, and Ealy there are a bunch of question marks.

PFT: Marc Trestman: Our draft will focus on defense
scs787 replied to madlithuanian's topic in Bearstalk
Agreed, but there's a good chance whoever they bring in to compete with him, even if it's a mid round pick, could win the battle. I actually like the depth at FS in the draft. Kenny Ladler, Marqueston Huff, and Tre Boston are all expected to be mid round picks that looked good during the Senior Bowl. Then there's Christian Bryant, who many here should love because he was the leader of the Ohio State D, who is coming off an ankle injury that is hurting his draft stock. -
lulz, we were a win away from going to San Diego one year. We've sent a portion of our team to Vegas to compete in the Vegas 7's invitational. Everyone had a voice on those teams, we didn't need a lone guy to rally around, we rallied around each other.

Walter Cherepinsky @walterfootball 24h According to @TonyPauline the #Bears are very interested in #Pitt DT Aaron Donald - http://walterfootball.com/combinerumors.php … That Tony Pauline fellow runs the website www.draftinsider.com. Though I don't think he'd be a reach, at all, I still think they can trade back a few spots to get him which would be real nice. I moved on to wanting Ealy more but if the Bears bring back Wootton, sign another DE, and pass on Melton I'm all for Donald.

Brad Biggs @BradBiggs 25h Emery said one thing he learned with Shea McClellin pick, would focus more on size and length in defensive end. Atta boy Phil, learn from your mistakes......Eliminates quite a few DE prospects in the draft. -

Also sounds like they really wanna resign Melton. -

I'm shocked. More tidbits to converse about..... Brad Biggs @BradBiggs 24h Emery says Chris Conte needs to come in and compete to win a starting job. "I'd like to be talking to him about an extension." That tells me they won't spend big money or a real high draft pick on a FS. That's just my opinion since he's leaving the door open for him to start. They'll probably bring in a vet or a mid round pick to compete. Brad Biggs @BradBiggs 25h Trestman: Shea McClellin knows he will be a linebacker. Will work at Sam and some at mike as well Thank god, I know it was talked about before but I don't think it was actually confirmed. -
Meh, I played 3 years of rugby, and 4 years varsity football. High school ball was 8-12 years ago so I don't recall it as much as I do my time on the rugby pitch. We were all more of a band of brothers, we rally around each other, there wasn't 1 guy who was the "leader". Everyone should be talking out there. I digress though, I'll let you guys have this.
