  1. Not to mention free agency hasn't even begun at this point so what may be needs now might not be needs come draft time. It's damn near impossible to predict at this point, but it's still fun to talk about. I like all the DL picks, the secondary picks, not so much. Kiper said the depth of the DL in the draft is pretty weak while the depth in the secondary is plentiful so he and I both think we can't afford to wait on drafting for the DL.
  2. Ya, I view Jernigan as more of a 4-3 NT whereas Donald is a 3-tech DT. If we resign Melton and Wootton then sign Bennett I'd love to have Jernigan next to Melton. Bennett-Melton-Jernigan-Wootton sounds a whole lot better than say Bennett-Jernigan-Paea-Wootton.....I like Donald more just because he can get after the QB, and he would allow the Bears to move on from Melton and use that money on a safety, or more depth.
  3. any reaon why you like him over Donald??? I see CBS now has Donald ranked right above Timmy, which I believe is right. (Kony Ealy is 5 spots ahead of them, I'm slowly slipping into wanting him RD1). Both played in the ACC, Jernigan had MUCH better talent around him, and yet Donalds "disruptive numbers" (sacks and TFLs) blew Jernigan out of the water. Either of them would be a wise choice, but if both are there I, personally, would take Donald.
  4. I of course would love this. Was talking about the draft the other day and deemed him "Lil Scrappy". He's just so scrappy in his pursuit of the QB, he can come at you with every move in the book. His size doesn't concern me one bit when you look at guys like Glenn Dorsey, Geno Atkins, and Kyle Williams who are all maybe 1/2 an inch taller than him, dominating at this level.
  5. Even better if you think he makes less than 8M. Again your mock had them signing Melton, who I believe will make no less than 6M, and in my mock I don't have them signing Melton or Brown so right there you have the money for Whitner. I'm probably off base here, but I'm not that big a Jerrnigan fan just because he wasn't THAT productive in college. I know with guys like him and Hageman it's more about potential but still with that potential you'd think they'd be more dominant in college. Jernigan had 11 tfl and 4.5 sacks this year. In a game against 1-11 Idaho he had 4.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks, so in 13 other games he had 6.5 tfl and 2 sacks. Yes he had 9 tackles in the Nat'l title game, but Auburn ran the ball 53 times so there were a lot of tackles to be made. I don't think he'll be terrible by any means, he's got loads of potential, but I personally like to see production over potential.
  6. I should elaborate and say that you can hide a bad safety behind a good front 7.....See Conte/Wright 2012.

    Excellent 4 Rd Mock

I'll say what I say about every draft that doesn't start with the DL.....As long as they fix the DL in FA I'm cool with this draft... I also don't like Dix nearly as much as everyone else here.
  8. I agree that half those guys won't be there but I used the fanspeak simulator just like you, so I just went with what they gave me....Who are these former scouts you give kudos to?? I think Whitner gets about 8M and Melton gets around 6M, so the difference in what we spent isn't too far away. Remember, to go along with that 16M number you came up with there could be a lot more where that came from. The way Cutler/Jennings/Slaus contracts were signed allow them to free up money as they need it, and I still expect to see Marshall to get an extension as well. As for starting a 4th round player...To me there's a bit of difference between a 4th round starter at DE and a 4th round starting safety. I think you can "hide" a "bad" safety more than you can "hide" a "bad" DE.
  9. I actually like it as a straight up 4-3....A 3-4, or a hybrid? not so much. I'll throw out an updated mock offseason....It's late so I'll only go with the starters.... 14 DE KONY EALY MISSOURI 51 DE STEPHON TUITT NOTRE DAME 82 CB STANLEY JEAN- BAPTISTE NEBRASKA 113 S TRE BOSTON NORTH CAROLINA 144 DE TAYLOR HART OREGON 167 DT RYAN CARRETHERS ARKANSAS STATE 175 CB AARON COLVIN OKLAHOMA Sign Bennett, Ratliff and Donte Whitner....defense needs some swagger, these guys bring that. If they run a hybrid.... 4-3 formations... DL- Bennett-Tuitt-Ratliff-Ealy LB- Briggs-Bostic-SMC....People won't like it, give it a year though, if it don't work we know what they need next year. S- Whitner-Boston CB- Jennings-Baptiste-Frey 3-4 DL- Bennett-Ratliff-Tuitt LB- SMC-Briggs-Bostic-Ealy Secondary- Same My idea of a hybrid defense is being able to throw a bunch of different looks at the offense using the same front 7.
  10. I'm gonna avoid the morality talks and say that it wouldn't surprise me if Tampa is pretty good next year should the draft right. People will praise Lovie for it, but in all reality, those guys actually have a pretty solid squad. Esp. if Doug Martin returns to his 2012 self. Their schedule last year was just BRUTAL. 9 of their 12 loses came against 10+ win teams. Hell they forced Seattle into over time.
  11. Obviously gotta be a realistic signings. Who would sign to go along with that last draft of yours. Looking at it again that draft would be fine if they added 2 starting DEs, a starting 3 tech DT(unless you think Paea/Jones is suitable, which I don't) and a starting CB.
  12. The quote was "He’s at middle linebacker; maybe in the future his best position might be at one of those outside spots" so he never really said "we're moving him there next year. If they run a hybrid D I just think Bostic would be awful outside. I'm also not so sure Briggs is ideal outside in a 3-4 either. IF they run a strict 4-3 still I'm cool with Bostic playing outside. IF they run a hybrid I think you gotta put Briggs and Bostic in the middle with Shea and a guy like Ealy on the outside.
  13. Without knowing anything about him, like whether or not he's a starting caliber player, I'd be down to bring him in to take over the Blake Costanza role of back up LB and special teams ace. I'm still a little iffy on the Bears needing to add a starting LB. I know they said Bostic's future COULD be at OLB but they weren't definite about it. I believe he should get another shot there.
  14. With so many holes on the defense I think we need to start adding who we're signing along with our mock drafts....With this draft we probably need to sign 2 starting DEs and a starting CB (unless you're vcomfortable with a 4th and 5th round pick starting, which I am not).....This COULD be a solid draft, but at this point I'd hate it. I like your first mock muchhh better. You went from 2 guys who can get after the QB in the first 2 rounds to taking more of a 2 gap DT and a DE who's been tagged as an inconsistent pass rusher in the 3rd and 4th.

    Rank the OL

I'd probably go Slaus-Long-Bushrod-Garza-Mills. Guards play a big role in the Kromers inside out blocking scheme. Bushrod gave up quite a bit of hurries and he had more false starts than the guy who was deemed J'Marcus "false start" Webb.
  16. I have no problem with this assessment. That's more than likely why Garza got the 2nd highest ranking because his jobs easier. I never said I agree with the gradings just that I'm not surprised by his better ranking. Heres a tidbit on Bushrod... that quote was taken from WCG.
  17. In case you didn't realize it, I was being sarcastic. I thought he played really well last year.
  18. Favorite tweet I saw during the game.... John Mullin ‏@CSNMoonMullin 3h Whatever #Bears need to spend on DL in draft, free agcy they have to do. Seattle living on front 4 rush. .....LOB gets the hype but man that DL was suffocating. They(LOB) don't look as great without those guys up front.
  19. I refuse to get in another PFF argument, so I'll stear it a different direction.... Our friends over at windy city gridiron only had Garza tagged with .25 sacks. It doesn't surprise me that he's ranked 2nd highest. WCG had Bushrod tabbed with 2.5 sacks.

    Rumor has it

Allow me to clear up what I mean by 3 girls "on the hook". I don't date while I'm jobless, so these are just 3 girls I'm getting to know. They're all into me, they all know my situation, and they all "hope I get a job soon"....Pretty much getting to know em with the intent of picking the best one once I start working....Making my scouting report on the prospects before I draft em

    Draft DAT

Depends on what they've done in FA, and where he ends up falling. If he ends up being projected in the 3rd and the Bears still lack quality depth, or god forbid, a starter then I'd pass.
  22. Oh no, you're using grades in reference to an OLman!!! Blasphemy!! 2nd best?? no way!! Lol for reals though I'm fine with him returning as starter, and I'm also fine with them grooming Boggs another year to be the eventual replacement.
  23. The bold part is the reason for my speculation. Our DL and LB coach have worked exclusively in the 3-4 when in the NFL. Those 2 guys also come from the Wade Phillips coaching tree, as we know Wade was one of the best 3-4 coaches around.....It doesn't necessarily mean they will, but at this point it would surprise me if there isn't at least a hybrid aspect to it where they flip flop guys around so they don't look so vanilla. I'd be fine whatever way they wanna go, and with barely any defensive players signed ATM I think they can go whatever way they wanna go.
  24. You, as well, are assuming we move to a 2 gap 3-4. It's the offseason, if we didn't talk about what ifs and assumptions then there would be nothing to talk about. I just look at our new coaches, look at who they worked under, and what they looked like in the past and believe they run more of an attacking 1 gap 3-4 which doesn't require the big boys up front. With the hiring of Pasq and Herring, 2 Phillips guys, I'd be a little surprised if the Bears moved away from what they're used to. As for the cap issues, that'll be another interesting part of the offseason.....How much of the 22M Jay got, the 7M Jennings got, and the 4M Slauson got are the willing to dip into? Will BMarsh get an extension? Will the Bears cut Peppers, Bush, Bennett, Podlesh, and/or Weems?? There is work that could be done, will it happen? Well were talkin ifs and buts again arent we.
