I tend to disagree with a lot of this, and I'm a little iffy on one thing..... First, I really don't know how hybrid defenses work with regards to people rotating in and out but the way I envision it is using the same 7 guys up front 75% of the time. I'm having a hard time trying to explain it, but A. What happens when a team goes into a hurry up offense, how are you gonna get your players out there when you wanna make the switch and B. Doesn't it take out a bit of the surprise element to a hybrid D? The idea of the hybrid D is to keep the other team guessing and on their feet. If you rotate in a big ol NT and SMC the other team is gonna know whats up. New England is the only reference point I know for the "hybrid defense" and the key to that defense was Rob Ninkovich. He's the guy that rotates all around the front 7 so they don't need to bring in new personnel to run a different look. SMC could/should have been that guy but I just have no faith in him as a DE. As for all the out of position talk with a few players..... I know Emery said Bostics future might be at OLB but I think that was made when thinking about a 4-3. When talking about guys out of position, he's a guy you should be talking about. The other guys, I think they run a 1 gap 3-4...The guys we have on staff came from Houston and Dallas and are "Wade Phillips guys".... Houston 2012, when they were a top 5 D.... JJ Watt(6'5" 290)- Shaun Cody(6-4 292)- Antonio Smith (6'3" 274) My suggested Bears front 3 is Michael Bennett (6'4" 274)- Jay Ratliff (6-4" 293)- Henry Melton (6'3" 295) pretty similar right? Bennett also played DT for Seattle this year so he's far more suited to play end than LB. A hybrid D is new to all of us, there's gonna be a lot of different views on how we think it should look.

Woah there buddy, don't try calling me out about the ladies. I've done more than fine in that department over the years. Since you brought me into this convo...Yes, you're right, it's all about confidence....A few years back, pre rugby, when I was a monster of a man, 6'3" 370, I dated a girl who did some modeling. During my rugby days, when I was still a biggy, 260 was my lowest playing weight, I was routinely able to get "hotties"...Even now, at 310 with no job I've got 3 different girls "on the hook" not an ugly one in the bunch.

I'd bust a big ol nut if this happens. Couple this with the guy I brought up in the other thread, Kony Ealy, and also Jay Ratliff then rotate the front 7 like so.... 4-3 DL- Bennett-Melton-Ratliff-Ealy LB- Briggs-Bostic-SMC 3-4 DL- Bennett-Ratliff-Melton LB- SMC-Briggs-Bostic-Ealy The front 3 in the 3-4 looks a little small, but I believe the coaches ran a 1 gap attacking 3-4 which doesn't call for the big behemoths up front.

I agree with the bold. If we wanna get an LB I'd actually prefer they get someone who can play both DE and OLB (If the Bears do indeed play some sort of a hybrid).....I know SMC is kinda that guy but he doesn't really offer much, if anything at DE. That's actually the one thing I don't like about all the "hybrid D" talks. If SMC is your guy who flip flops from DE to OLB then the 4-3 formations are gonna blow. Kony Ealy could fit the role of the guy who plays DE in 4-3 formations then stands up in the 3-4..

I said it awhile ago, I think Raji is a bit overrated. Like you mentioned, he just turned down a contract that would make him 8M a year, if he wants more than that that's a definite no from me. My #1 target is a Michael Bennett, 1B is Brian Orakbo. Bennett is capable of playing end in both a 4-3 and a 3-4. Orakbo is capable of playing 4-3 end and OLB in a 3-4. Whether or not they have the money though is a different story.

I wouldn't hate it if they fix the line in FA. One of the reasons Bostic sucked so bad was because OLs were able to get a guy to the 2nd level and he wasn't able to run free. If they don't fix the line we'll see the same thing with Mosley...Whether or not he can get off those blocks is to be seen.
-
I hope you're right...If not Bennett then Hardy, Orakpo, Houston, or Johnson would be ideal....Guys like Jason Worilds, Willie Young, or Robert Ayers could be good signings as well but not ideal. Gotta get some kind of pass rush in here.
-
Interesting. I don't buy the whole 1 day contract thing so I agree with your last line. I don't think he can hang in man 2 man but he can no doubt still hang in cover 2, or something similar. Gotta fix the pass rush though, cover 2 get exploited when the QB has a ton of time to throw.

I think it's just because we know they have a boat load of picks so it's easy to speculate that they might be willing to move some of those picks. Trading with an inferior team is ideal, but it's hard to judge who might be willing to do so until some reports come out. That said though...Looking at the trade value chart(something I didn't do before) the Bears should be able to get a 2nd AND a 3rd round pick for trading down to the 30 spot....With the state of the D I'd trade with any team if it meant I got 5 picks in the first 3 rounds.. Since I'm bored and there's nothing else to talk about.....(using WF 4 round mock) 1R (30)- Aaron Donald or Stephon Tuitt DT- Both guys can fit as either a 3 technique in a 4-3 or 5 technique in a 3-4. 2R (51)- LaMarcus Joyner S- Also played CB so he should be good in coverage, and he's also a real physical tackler. 2R (61)- Stanley Jean Baptiste or Pierre Desir CB- Big, physical corner to take over for Peanut should they move on. 3R (77)- Josh Mauro DE- Another guy who fits both a 3-4 and a 4-3. big and strong enough to play 3-4 end, and quick enough to play 4-3 end. 3R (81)- Ed Reynolds S- A big safety to compliment the undersized Joyner....Not sure how I feel about 2 rookie safeties but it couldn't be worse than Conte/Wright...It also gives the Bears the chance to just blow their load on a pass rushing DE. 4R- Tyler Larson OC- Said to be really athletic for a center so I think he fits nicely in the inside out scheme Kromer runs The more picks they can get the better.

This too is true....It's going to be real interesting to see what goes on. SMC is supposedly moving to OLB, Bostic was deemed a better fit outside, Briggs in the past said he doesn't wanna move to MLB...Somethings gotta give...
-
Kudos to them, but it's not some big change. Marinelli will still run the same scheme and Kiffin is still on the staff.
-
I wouldn't count it out if they switch to a 3-4...
-
At this point(pre-FA?)?? Literally every defensive player could be a target.
-
Demps is a kind of a bad comparison, looking at his rotoworld page he spent his whole first year on the IR, then committed back to track, then got hurt again....He's played in 2 games. I'm gonna let this one go for now though, no need for this thread to be any bigger than it already is..

Perhaps I should of added that I don't think he'll become anything right away. With an athlete like he is though you coach him up for a year and he COULD become something..... I stress the word COULD because I knew you guys would think I'm calling this a lock, and I'm not....I already admitted that it wouldn't surprise me if he never becomes anything.... That's actually a really good comparison....Why do you think the Bears are hanging on to Fendi or why he keeps getting jobs?? Because of his athletic potential, because if the lights turn on with a guy like Isles or Onubun, you COULD have yourself a really good player.... May not happen now, probably never happens, but with my boredom I just brought it up as something to talk about. The Ugh part was a little over board lol Also stinger, yes this is just like the "Marcus Webb" argument because again my talk of "potential" is being misconstrued into you guys thinking I'm saying its a lock.
-
He's gonna be a running back. You utilize him the same way the Lions did with Reggie Bush in the passing game and pitch the ball to him out on the edge and he COULD become something.....To me it's no different than NFL teams looking for basketball players to play TE.
-
As a guy who follows rugby it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he becomes something....also wouldn't surprise me if nothing becomes of him. With rugby becoming relevant again(first time in 100 years that it's an olympic sport) I think its just a matter of time before we start seeing a few guys making the jump. Just my biased opinion.
-
The difference is Isles has world class speed. He may not become Darren Sproles but he can become Detroits Trindon Holliday. Dude runs a 4.22 40
-
This is actually a bit of old news, he signed on Jan 10th, but I hadn't heard until just now when I was watching the rugby 7s.....If this guy puts it together he's going to be an absolute pest, think Darren Sproles. Wish we had a catch all for this sort of stuff.

Averaging 57 tackles a year as a 3-4 lineman is pretty good. He was actually better in KC as a 5 tech than he was as a NT this year. 5 tech is where I would want him in the 3-4 formation. I wouldn't count out the return of Ratliff as the NT in 3-4 formations since he had success there with our new DL coach. I'm also thinking he may be a little overrated, at least here anyway. Guy had 2 sacks this year, and one came against a sorry Western Illinois team. Also only had 13 TFLs, with 5 of those coming against non conference no bodies. In 8 conference games this year he had 5.5 TFL and a sack. In his career Hageman has 24 TFL and 10 sacks....Just LAST YEAR Donald had 28 and 11....66 and 29 are his career numbers. In their lone mutual game, against Syracuse, Hageman had 2 TFLs and 4 total tackles...Donald? 3.5 and 9. On paper, film, and at the senior bowl Donald > Hageman. Only think Hageman has is length.
-
Hageman is bigger in height but they're about the same "girth" wise. Again, Hageman is 6'6" 318 while Donald is a touch under 6'1" 288 so while Hageman is 20 pounds heavier he also has 5 more inches for it to be distributed. I again come back to Glenn Dorsey who played NT for San Fran at almost the same exact height and weight as Donald. I like Donald more as a 3/5 technique though.
-
He's played for 2 teams, I wouldn't call that "bouncing around the league". You draft or sign another big CB to play those big guys.....Jennings also plays a lot bigger than 5'8". I'm not that "coached up" in the secondary department so I won't be getting into a big argument on this one. I wouldn't hate to see Tillman back at CB, and I really don't know whether we'll see any kind of coverage change or not. I do like the idea of getting Tillman around the ball more with his acblity to force fumbles.
-
I really wanna see 2 safeties added. Jennings ran a ridiculous 4.32 at the combine, he's not strictly a zone corner.
-
Really a boring game IMO. Donald never got to the QB but he did break through the line quite a few times. I still love em but now I'm not THAT in love with him. I thought Hageman actually looked better at DE than DT, but not great at either position. Dee Ford showed off his speed, but for some reason I get a SMC type of vibe with him. He can win with his speed, but what happens when you get a hand on him? Chris Borland and Telvin Smith were the most impressive LBs. I like the idea of Smith moving back to safety, he could end up being pretty darn good there. I thought Jimmie Ward and Deone Bucannon looked like the best safeties Crockett Gilmore looked like a real good TE catching the ball and blocking. If he's there in the 5th I think I'd take him depending on what happens in FA and the first 4 picks. Stanley Jean-Baptiste and Dontae Johnson were the best of the big CBs. A guy that really came outta no where to impress me was the dude from Princeton, Caraun Reid. Could be a good 3-4 round pick.
