I think it could be more about what they wanna do schematically. I THINK we'll be doing a lot more man to man and I don't think Tillman has the speed to hang in M2M coverage. I hope he tests the waters, no one is really interested, and he comes back as a safety.
-
Gotcha, well I haven't seen anything yet so I question the validity of it....I do think that they should try to shift a lot of his money into bonus money if possible. If they can reduce his cap hit a ton it could make sense to keep him. He's been awfully inconsistent the last 2 years but he still shows flashes here and there. Paired with some better lineman he might become more consistent.

Here's a good article on the 3-3-5 D... http://grantland.com/features/an-excerpt-e...-3-3-5-defense/ It's a long article so I'll a pull a little piece from it that kinda sums it up... Article says Louisville used it more as a sub package though, so Jason is probably right in that they ran a base 4-3. Point remains about Hurtt having experience with 3 down lineman though.
-
Here's something real interesting.... Zach Zaidman @ZachZaidman 27h New #Bears assistant DL coach Clint Hurtt spent last 4 years as Louisville's DL coach/recruiting coordinator. Cardinals ran a 3-3-5 defense. I'll have to watch some Louisville tape to see how that goes....I highly doubt they do anything like that but if Zaidman is correct then he does experience with 3 down lineman.
-
I haven't heard a thing about him yet....I assume you mean passing on cutting him correct?
-
Sinclair was informed he will not be back, Hurtt takes the Asst DL title Sinclair had. It all makes sense now Pasqualoni- DL Coach Hurtt- Asst DL Coach Herring- LB Coach Sinclair was another CFL hire that didn't work, Hurtt seems like a big upgrade.
-
That very well could end up what happens and I wouldn't hate it at all. I'm just living in an ideal world where we can still get the guy while also picking up a 2nd rounder.
-
For those who don't know, the game is tomorrow at 3. Last 2 years the Bears took a guy out of this game, will Hageman or Donald make it 3 years in a row??? Game is also filled with intriguing safeties as well Jimmie Ward, Ahmad Dixon, Isaiah Lewis, Craig Loston, Kenny Ladler, and Terrance Brooks all could be potential targets in the 2/3R. With no Peanut at this point a guy like Keith McGill, Stanley Jean Baptiste, Dontae Johnson, Pierre Desir and Dez Southward are all big corners to watch. (I do think we should get a corner with good size if they don't resign Tillman, not really interested in the small guys) Couple potential big NTs to watch as well in Daquan Jones and Justin Ellis. If Garza or Boggs aren't the answer at OC next year we may see or starting OC come out of this game also. While I don't think the Bears should go OC early, Tyler Larsen or Weston Richburgh could be available a little later on and look like good fits.
-
Don't have the numbers to average them out but just saying it all for what its worth. I think it's more about power and skill moreso than size. Pretty much you have to be a guy who commands a double team. Guys like Dorsey, while small, are just too much of a handful to play one on one.
-
If they do move Briggs inside with Bostic I really wouldn't mind seeing Washington given a shot. I think he's a better fit there than at 4-3 DE. I think he's got the potential to be a monster using the 4.5 speed off the edge. Both he and SMC would be question marks IMO but it's worth a try. The D won't be fixed in year 1 so I think it's fine to try those 2 out on the edge...If they fail, you know what to look for next year. The bigger key will be the front 3. You need guys that demand double teams. That doesn't nessessarily mean size like I mentioned in the other tread, a guy like Aaron Donald is going to command a double team because he's just so damn explosive and knows how to move. After doing the research I did about smaller guys in a 3-4 I still really like the idea of trading down and grabbing him....Not as the NT, though I think he could play there, but as a 5 tech (DE in a 3-4). Then I'd still like to see them sign Cody and resign Ratliff making the DL Donald-Cody-Ratliff.
-
With the possibility of moving to a 3-4 I was looking at some of the 3-4 tackles from around the league and thought "These guys aren't that big"...So I question, does size really matter?? The 49ers used Glenn Dorsey, all 6'1" 297 pounds of him. He racked up 41 tackles and 2 sacks, which doesn't sound like a lot but for a NT that'snot bad at all. The Texans last year, when they were one of the best Ds in the league, ran out Shaun Cody, who is 6'4" 307. This year they used a 6'3" 300 pound Earl Mitchell there, who got 48 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Their listed backup at the position is 6'2" 293. The Cards, who had the top ranked run defense, went a little bigger, but certainly not "behemoth" big with 6'3" 317 Dan Williams. Also, Jay Ratliff was one of the best nose tackles in the league and he's only 6'4" 303, and from an old article I'm reading he was only 287 when playing the NT in Dallas. There are obviously a lot more big monsters like Raji and Ngata out there playing the position, but I question if you really need the huge 320+ guys out there.

I think Hurtt will get some lame title like "DL Quality Control". I think Harris is the secondary QC, Densai for LB, and Hurtt for the DL....What those guys actually do, I have no clue.
-
LOL, oops. I knew I got Louisville and FSU mixed up. Had a brain fart and was thinking "I know they had 'the best QB'" and right away thought Bridgewater and Louisville. My bad...
-
Which is why you shouldn't care about what the media thinks...I know I sure don't.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?id=10341389 He comes with a bit of controversy over a recruiting issue a few years back but luckily there's no recruiting that goes on in the NFL. Coached the NCAA sack leader Marcus Smith this year, was apart of the 06 Miami team that holds the all time record for least rushing yards allowed per game (67), and he coached one of my favorite non Bears, Vince Wilfork. Was hurt his senior year at Miami but was named an honorary coach. He's just 35 years old and looks like he can still man the NT position(he's a big ol boy). Said to be one of the best young upstart coaches in the college ranks. An entertaining fellow as well....He'll look good on hard knocks lol. EDIT- For those who didn't get the hint from the Marcus Smith comment, Clint is coming over from the National Champions Louisville Cardinals staff....Guess that should be thrown in there somewhere lol.
-
I still really like the idea of adding Terrence Cody to play NT. He'll come fairly cheap and gives them some leeway should they miss out on guys like Nix and McCullers.
-
Even better then, didn't bust the trade value chart out, a 3rd just sounded more reasonable.
-
I get what you're saying but that was a designed run play where the center pulled out and it was the guards job to throw a down block on him. He got a hand on him, but Donald is just to fast, slanted his shoulder and slipped on by. I won't say he was good OL play ultimately the OLman had no chance. Here's a nice long highlight video on him
-
I know I made note of this in another thread but I thought it deserves it's own thread. Herring and Pasquanelli, who will be the DL coach, worked together in the same roles on the 2010 Cowboys team. Both guys have been strictly 3-4 guys in the NFL. I like it....Bears might not have Wade Phillips but they got 2 of his disciples on the staff.
-
Apparently it's gonna be Pasquanelli at DL coach and Herring at LB..... That's what it was in Dallas in 2010.
-
uhhhh..... Zach Zaidman @ZachZaidman 24h RT @alexmarvez: Source tells @FOXSports Reggie Herring to #Bears as LB coach Another guy who worked under Phillips in Dallas and in Houston.
-
He just gets off the ball so quickly that the OLmen had no chance to throw the down block.
-
If they haven't already fixed the DL (meaning they don't have starters at ever position) I'd be somewhat disappointment if they went with Dix. DL is the far bigger need IMO.

I did another Fanspeak mockdraft with the Bears trading down with San Fran to get another 3rd.... 1R 30th pick- Aaron Donald DT- Absolutely love the guy as the new 3T DT. Most explosive interior lineman I've seen. 2R- Ed Reynolds FS- Big, smart, good in coverage and a reliable tackler. 3R- Jackson Jeffcoat DE- Only DE in the country to lead his team in tackling. Real good against the run and can get in the backfield to pressure the QB. 3R 30th- Stanley Jean Baptiste CB- If they let Tillman walk they need another big CB to matchup with guys like Megatron. 4R- Taylor Hart DE/DT- Versatile enough to provide depth up and down the line. 5R- Josh Mauro DE- Big DE to provide even more depth 6R- Chris Davis CB- Good special teams player and has looked good at the senior bowl in coverage. 6R- Jordan Najvar TE- Underrated TE who didn't have the chance to shine in Baylors offense that didn't utilize the TE that much. Transfer out of TE U, Stanford Really heavy on the D for obvious reasons. Add a safety and another impact DE in FA and call it a day.

^^^ Case and point, good find Jason. Dude is easily my favorite 3 technique prospect in the draft. Hageman has looked just like he has all season in drills this weak. Dominate at times but just "normal" more often than not. Donalds motor just seems like it's on another level than Hagemans. Unless the Bears bring back Melton, or another 3 tech DT, I'm all in on Donald and would hope they're able to trade down to get him.
