They shouldn't even have been in that position with the world beater that is Josh McCown at QB. Held to 20 pts against a team giving up 30 a game? A team who has been scored on through the air 32 times, tops in the league. I know this probably isn't the thread for it, and we're past it now that Jay is our QB but I just wanted to point it out because I feel like it was never brought up.
-
Yup, theres no way they should have lost 2 games where they scored 30+. Also shouldn't have given up 41 to the Rams. But I guess that's what injuries do to a team. Still a little shocked we're even in this situation. Also, just to throw it out there....freak the Vikings. How did Josh McCown, Mr. #1 QB in the world lose to them?
-
Ha, there's no doubt the Ravens aren't letting him go...I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin
-
Holy shit! Win out and the Bears are in.
-
I guess since I'm supporting both sides here. The one big plus in going with McCown/Rookie is you wouldn't have to rely on rookies to come in on the defense. But with an offensive minded coach who seems to like Jay, and really, I think they'd have enough funds to fix it with or without Jay, that might not be THAT BIG of a plus to the team. One thing is for sure, between the QB, DT, Safety, and what to do with all the FAs, Emery really has his work cut out for him this offseason.

It's all just really speculative any way you look at it. The difference between the 2 QBRs is 20 points. I averaged out the defenses they faced 15th for Jay and 25th for Josh. The difference between those 2 spots is about 10 points. So if knock off 10 points from Joshs and add 10 points to Jay you've got identical QBRs. I've gone on record a few times saying I believe in the system and would be ok with either decision for next year. This year though I think it was the right move to give Jay his job back just due to the whole "a player shouldn't lose his job to injury thing". Unless said player was garbage to begin with I think it sets a bad president(I believe that's the wrong spelling but you catch my drift).
-
And just so I say it, I'm trying to use those numbers as my case in Cutler vs McCown, I'm just trying to put the QBR stats into some perspective here.
-
It was the washington game, washington is the 30. I gave it to McCown because he played much more in that game than Jay did(Jay only had 4 drives in that game). Not sure where else you're going with your post. McCowns average opponent was ranked 25th(using QBR) Jay's was 16th. I know I'm assuming here but you gotta assume if Jay got to play during that stretch he'd be ranked higher than 7th.

My heart sunk after that first throw as well, but then fox replayed it, the announcers got on board with the throw, and I felt a little better. There was a window there, the defender just got in there and got a hand on it to tip it up and it got picked.
-
While were on QBR 18th, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, and 30th. That's the defensive QBR ranking for the opponents of Josh McCown. Jay has faced the 6th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 21st, 26th rated D in that category.

If they don't make a Super Bowl run, and they won't, he's gonna be gone. 2 weeks in a row he probably could have won the game if he just continued to run the damn ball!
-
I liken him more to a "lesser" Brett Favre. Someone who's gonna piss you off from time to time but def someone you can win with. A rocket arm is both a blessing and a curse.
-
How come when Josh throws it up into double coverage to Jeffery it's a "perfect pass" but when Jay does the same thing it's awful? 71% against a top defense is pretty damn good....But as the negative nancy you are, you could care less.
-
lulz Matt Flynn just wrecked the Dallas D. 3 of their last 4 halves the offense hasn't had to punt against that D....They make our D look good.
-
Gonna be real interesting to see what they do at DT. Jay Ratliff certainly just made a case to be at the very least a key rotational piece. If Melton doesn't wanna take a huge discount I wouldn't mind making him a starter next year....If Melton DOES take a discount I could see he, Jay, and Collins all back, then taking a DT in the mid rounds.
-
Hey hey I win my first ever game thread, I got dibs next week too. Jay was making me regret backing him in the first half but overall all I thought he was good, and obviously good enough. I'll take completing 71% against a good defensive team. Now C'mon Ravens....Also C'mon Dallas, if the Pack lose they might end up sitting Rodgers the rest of the season. Also, shout out to the defense, specifically Jay Ratliff who got 3 QB hits on the day. If he continues playing at this level and Briggs returns the defense could become "Good enough" for the offense to beat anyone.

I think Balta has been a little busy lately, so I'll step into his role. Tough matchup for Jays return. I think we'll see whoever Joe Haden isn't on have a huge day, and it won't be because Jay is focusing on 1 guy, it'll be because Joe Haden is really good. The Browns are running out a familiar face in Jason Cambell, who last week dropped 371 yards against a middle of the pack Patriot defense (Josh McCown who?). 3 of the NFLs top WRs will be featured in this game, Josh Gordon, Alshon Jeffery, and Brandon Marshall....Cleveland also features the 2nd best TE in the league, Jordan Cameron.....The secondaries on both sides will have their hands full. Is Chris Ogbonnya really gonna drop another 100 yards on the Bears bad run defense??? I THINK NOT, calling it now. How will Matt Forte preform after winning the 2013 Eisman Trophy? My prediction...Bears 27...Browns 17
-
I never believe "sources" because there is just too much unknown. I do believe in the system though so I won't hate either decision. These weapons, in a WCO, is just kill. Playing Jay to close out the season is the right call, can't take out a guy, who was a top 10 QB, due to injury. Next year though is a different story.
-
Meh.....I just think it's wrong to compare what Josh did against the 32nd, 30th, 27th, 22nd, 21st, and the 14th ranked defense(on field conditions that favor the offense) against what Jay does against the team who just last week was ranked 5th against the pass. If Jay puts up 250 yards against them, something only Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Joe Flacco have done, I'll take it as a win.
-
Once again..against bad defenses....Gronk was injured in the 3rd Q. To your first point, I thought St. Louis was gonna be a good test because they have a good pass rush....Their pass rush was almost non existent that game, and past that they are still 22nd in the league against the pass. The Baltimore game was when the field conditions were just awful, and it really favored the offense. Yes, I'm talking about that team. Their record doesn't change the fact that they have only allowed one 300+ yard game, and are 9th against the pass, and 8th overall in team defense. Joe Hayden is considered by some to be the best corner in the game, and their other corner leads the league in pass deflections. I can already see people complaing about Cutler "focusing" on Marshall or Jeffery, when really he's just avoiding Hayden.
-
The point I was making is how do you compare what Josh did against bad defenses vs what Jay does against a good defense? The Browns held Tom Brady scoreless in the 1st half last week....Is Josh McCown better than Tom Brady? Brady was the guy who got the only 300+ yard game against them because he put up 179 yards in what should have been garbage time in the 4th quarter. Browns held Andy Dalton, who is 9th in the league in passing, to just 93 yards.
-
And of course the Bears finally face a top 10 pass defense, a pass defense that has only given up 1 300 yard game this year, so he may not even reach 300 and the uninformed will look at the stats and crush him.
-
Brad Biggs @BradBiggs 11 Dec So barring something unexpected, Trestman clear #Bears will start Jay Cutler vs #Browns on Sunday. Brad Biggs @BradBiggs 11 Dec But Trestman is leaving decision on QB open because he wants to see how he performs in workout later today, maybe see how he feels Thursday I think it's the right move.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/break...story?track=rss I've been talking about this for awhile now, and it's nice to see that there's a good chance it happens. He signed a 5M contract last year after putting up 9 sacks, this year he's less productive because he's apart of a deep Seahawk defense that rotates 4 DEs, I can imagine the Bears can get him for that same amount per year on a multi year deal.

I agree overall, but hey're still very much in it, and should be till the very end, so the timing of this post is a little odd to me.
