PFF ranks us second to worst in pass blocking (6th best at run block, though). The bottom 3 on pass blocking: Long, Bushrod, Mills in that order. Mills being the worst as well as PFF's worst tackle in football. He leads the league in QB hurries surrendered by a fairly large margin; Bushrod is 10th worst and Mills has allowed twice as many. Slauson has been our best lineman, according to their stats, with nobody else having a markedly positive impact. Jay getting the ball out so quickly is what's making this line look so good....If we move on from Jay it's gotta be someone who gets rid of the ball just as quick as he does. I don't have the stats at hand, I stole this from a poster on soxtalk who has a subscription.

Sigh, right when Cutler was putting up a year we expected out of him we are gonna dump him? I'm not waiting till the 3rd round to draft a starting QB, if we're drafting one it's gotta be a first or maybe a 2nd rounder. They've built too good an offense to rely on a 3rd round draft pick. We'll see, gotta have good ends that will create pressure on the QB. I like Wootton but I'm not sure if Peppers is that guy any more. We know SMC isn't that guy, then you have question marks in Washington and Bass. And the LBs would have to come more often which might not be a a bad thing. You also gotta factor in how different the game is when it comes to the TE position. If you're bringing heat from the LBs it's gonna put a lot of pressure on whoever has to cover the TE.

Ahh yes Fendi, my new man crush! He's gonna do work!

The 3 technique is supposedly the key to a cover 2 defense. If you've got 2 fatties in the middle you've gotta get good pressure from the ends and you gotta get pressure from your LBs which they certainly can do if it's part of the plan. The year we had Traylor/Washington they got 18 sacks out their LB core which seems like a ton compared to recent years. I'd love to see Louis Nix fall to us in the first, which seems like a possibility now.

I wouldn't hate it if they did it. You can argue that they need to draft a speed WR and a backup QB but I can rebut that they were the 3rd highest scoring team in the league without a speed receiver, and we have a simple enough offense that a guy like McCown can run it competently. Garza looks better with better OGs around him as well so the need for OC isn't as high as some may think. But ya, I say you go defense at least the first 3 rounds. Gotta get a safety, a corner, and a DT early IMO.

Was Peppers really disruptive last year though? He had a few good games but he certainly wasn't dominate. Melton offers you high upside at a discounted price, that's something the Bears should be looking to bring back. You cover your ass by drafting another DT high and hope he gets back to playing at a pro bowl level. I'm getting rid of Peppers and replacing him with Micheal Bennett who has a chance to be dominate.
-
Jose Abreu or what I'm nicknaming him before Hawk does, Bazooka Jo, should be pretty good. Put up better numbers in Cuba than Puig did so it's realistic to think he's better than Puig who was damn good last year. PK is a goner and Dunn will stick out this year and will be gone next year. As for the Bears D next year.... I'm cutting Peppers- This saves what 8-9M in cap space? Resigning Melton/Collins- Probably gonna be around 6-7M for both Signing Micheal Bennett(Martys bro)- Another 5M Resign Tillman and move him to safety- 3M Resign Jennings if he takes a discount- 3M Draft 1R- CB 2R- Safety 3R- DL

Can't tell if this is Soxtalk or talkbears??? Much like the White Sox have good pitching so they don't need to go into a full rebuild, the Bears have a good offense so they just need to re-tool the defense. Much like what they did with the OL this year I think they could do the same with the D next year.

Hopefully it gives Greene an opportunity...Wasn't Costanzo out there for Briggs yesterday?
-
If Cutler's season is over, what do you do next year?
scs787 replied to Bears4Ever_34's topic in Bearstalk
I know him being "Injury plagued" is a bit of a problem but I'd resign him. Coming into this game he had the 9th best QB rating, 6th most TDs, and 6th highest completion%....and this was supposed to take 3 years to "really mesh" or whatever was said. -
At this point it's just beating a dead horse.
-
Ya, he can't be the starter next year.
-
It's all my fault guys, I sat Cutler for the first time in the talkbears league, and I also started Jordan Reed.
-
Steve Young was Cutler-esque in his footwork wasn't he?
-
I think he's a decent game manager, I wouldn't hate him as the backup. I too agree with Connor though, I wanna see them draft a QB next year.

Martellus Bennett @MartysaurusRex 16 Oct "@BradleyBananas: @MartysaurusRex he’s all sorts of injured lol" don't believe everything you read. According to Marty, he must not be as injured as we think. I mean supposedly the reason he got released was for failing a physical, so the question is, why was he taking a physical week 7 if he's expected to be out the whole year? As far as him not fitting, I disagree, at least to the extent that I think he'll be better than anything they can get off the street. As far as him being a 3-4 nose tackle, at 6'4" 302 he's not your typical 3-4 NT.
-
Jay Ratliff was released today, Martellus Bennett seems to think bringing him in is a good idea. @MartysaurusRex: Yo @JayRat90 holla at me. You'll look good in navy and orange. You bother with these types of guys because, why not? They're probably better than the guys on the streets.
-
I'd honestly be all over him....The guys he got suspend with (Robert Quinn and Greg Little) are both in the NFL so what they did is not that big a deal. They're not in a position to be picky IMO.
-
Gotta see what Boom does before saying the move didn't pay off....If he was relying on Williams to play the whole year then ya, he made a mistake, but since he "handcuffed" Williams with a 2nd round pick that's not the case....On that note, Mr. Bostic your table is ready. @BradBiggs Trestman indicates injury for DJ Williams could be season-ending. Team continuing to evaluate situation.
-
It's the injuries. I shouldn't have to tell you that the key to a cover 2 is getting pressure from your front 4, and when you can't get that pressure the defense as a whole is going to struggle. At this point it is what it is and it's beating a dead horse. Nothing short of a trade or getting Warren Sapp out of retirement(sarcasm) is gonna change this.
-
I'm not saying you're wrong because we haven't seen enough of him but for what its worth he was recruited to play safety in college, a position he played his first 2 years at Rutgers. Once again, not saying you're wrong, just saying I don't share the same concerns.
-
Serious question, did Peppers play? I could have sworn I seen him out there but the box score suggests no, and it doesn't show up on espn game logs(they have them up for other players). I know he's seeing some double teams but is it really every down? I may have to break down the game to see just how much DT he's actually seeing. Also... I absolutely love seeing them using 6 Olinemen. When all you really need in the passing game is Marshall, Jeffery, Martellus, and Forte then it makes sense to give Jay all the time he needs to get those guys the ball. When Jay has the time he's a straight up boss.
-
Lookin like the Illiana Misfits out there (That's my rugby team who's known for high tackling)
-
Love to see them go with 6 OL sets. That never happened in the past.
-
Sigh...even against one of the worst OLs in football this DL can't do a damn thing.
