I would make that move. A guy like him you can leave on an island and run whatever sort of coverage he wants. He might find it hard to get all the money he wants here in the 2nd wave of FA when most teams don't have that kind of money.
-
With the depth at the DT position in this draft, I prefer they wait till the 2R to grab a DT, but I wouldn't loathe Rankins in the first. I do think he will fit better in a 4-3, but I do think he can hang in a 3-4 like he did in college.

This is why.... https://youtu.be/fhUX4KM00MI

Personally, I would be interested in all of em except Oakman, but after the Marshall and Bennett things I can't imagine they take risks. Other guys who, if they do decide to take risks, Tyler Higbee, Alex McCallister, and in a way, Myles Jack are all guys I would consider.

I went OT-DT-CB. I look at as there are no true holes but there are upgrades to be made at OT, DT, CB, S, and a few backup positions. When you look at those positions you have. S- Antrell Rolle- Before going down to an injury he was actually very solid. I think he's gonna be one of those guys who play into their mid 30's CB- Tracy Porter- I'm torn on him. I think he's serviceable, but also should be upgraded over Rolle. DT- The biggest question mark to me. Probably not the biggest hole but it's a position that I have no idea what to think about. Are Sutton and Ego even fits in a 3-4? Is Unrein starting quality or is he merely a rotational guy? What is Washington? I say forget the question marks and let's build a dominate front 3. OT- Charles Leno- I was the biggest supporter of just grabbing an OT in the mid rounds to compete with Leno but after all they did this offseason, that pushed OT higher up by eliminating needs in front of it.

When I hear about him, the first name that comes to mind is Martellus Bennett. I personally wouldn't mind him in the 2nd, but I suspect he might not be on the Bears board.
-
Yeah, I think BPA is all relative to that GMs board, and I think most GMs will have players in positions of need higher We always hear about the Ravens going BPA every year, but when I look at there drafts, it seems like all their picks fill a need.
-
Certainly wouldn't hate it, but I'm thinking we draft one in the first 4 rounds.
-
I have heard that the Chargers asked him to run safety drills, and with his ability in coverage, he might actually make a really good SS. I don't think he has the size to play OLB, and we are set at ILB, but Jack might be worth considering at safety. If Freeman or Trev go down you could move him down to ILB.
-
Gotta remember that being listed as OLB could also mean he's a 4-3 OLB. I think Smith is best suited in a role where his coverage skills play out vs going after the QB. Could he play the role? Yeah probably, but he's probably gonna be a a bit of a project in that role. So essentially you're looking at a guy who's redshirted year 1 and stepping into a new role year 2. That's not what I really want in a 2nd rounder.
-
I suppose if he bulks up.
-
The difference being Jerrell Freeman and Danny Trevathon are very good players while the competition elsewhere is "meh" at best. I wouldn't hate to see them draft Smith, but I'd much rather they stay away from ILB/WR/OG early. Those positions are where they are set IMO.
-
No brainier.
-
So for those who still want Smith, are you just cutting Freeman next year? He'll be 31 which is oldish, but he's been playing at a high level and I really think he can can be productive through all 3 years of his contract.
-
I would. I'm really starting to like the idea of Taylor Decker. He's not as good as Stanley in pass protection, but I do think he'll be good enough in that department to stick at LT in the NFL. What he does MUCH better than Stanley is run block, and he does that very very well. I think for a team that looks to run the ball a ton, drafting a guy who isn't a good run blocker might be a bit of a mistake.
-
In mocks maybe that's where he is going, but I can't imagine he gets an invite to the draft if there isn't some first round buzz there.
-
Yeah, I would be shocked/pissed if they traded up for Goff. Goff has a high ceiling, but dude is 0-12 and averaged 2 INTs per game against ranked opponents. I personally believe he has a bigger chance of being a bust than a franchise QB. Trading up for Mariotta is one thing, if they even really attempted to, but Goff? No thank you. Jay, all things considered, had a strong year as well and I truly believe that changed some things. They've been talking to nearly everyone it seems. There's absolutely no question they need a #2 QB though.
-
Also Jason, you've brought up Alexander quite a bit. Not sure why. I think both Apple and Jackson are better picks.
-
Yeah know who probably does know? The staff who has seen him practice a whole year.
-
Trading UP for a guy who isn't even a "Lock" to be a franchise QB would be the absolute worst! That statement has nothing to do with me being a Cutler supporter either. If this were a sure fire franchise QB, maybe, but with needs still sprinkled all around you don't give up talent to draft Jared friggin Goff.
-
I believe Kiper did mention the Giants but also said there was no chance he gets there. Mel is often wrong so we'll see, but I tend to agree in that he will be gone.
-
Also from the Kiper interview I heard, he doesn't think Zeke will be there citing Dallas, Baltimore, and Philly as landind spots ahead of the Bears.
-
A lot of OLinemen working out with LeCharles Bentley. I kinda like Decker though, really nasty player. If he can't hang at LT he should be a very good mauling RT. With the Bears probably being a run first team they might be able to live with Decker at LT. Speaking of "Path to the draft" some guys are still taking the wrong path. Oakman was arrested for sexual assault.....Personally I think he was way over hyped anyway and didn't really have any interest in him, but I know some here did. He might end up going undrafted.
-
FWIW both Chris Jones and Vernon Butler have been invited to the draft. Typically they only invite 1st rounders. I think those 2 are gonna surprise some people by how high they go. I hope I'm wrong and one of the 2 are there in the 2nd for the Bears to take.

Was listening to the radio and Kiper was on saying White would have been the #1 WR in this draft.
