A pack fan over on soxtalk also said they might wanna cut AJ Hawk as well.

@RapSheet Carl Poston, Charles Woodson's agent, tells me: "They're getting ready to release him. It's part of the business." Thank god, dude has been a thorn in our side for years now.

4 drops in 54 targets says otherwise. He keeps the defense honest and thats what you want from a deep THREAT ...The threat to go deep, which he brings. It's simple. Yes, I agree there were often times where he didn't adjust to the flight of the ball but when the balls put on him big things can happen....and for a #4 WR thats all you can ask for. There is a difference between Wallace and Hester...Wallace can be relied on to do more than just stretch the defense which is why he's not a #4 receiver.
-
To the line I highlighted......Exactly. I compared these guys because that's the position Devin plays now and for the last 7 years, so the comparison between the before mentioned #4 receivers and Devin is valid. I'm not counting on him giving us anything more than a #4 receiver or a #3 in a pinch. He's not the #1 previous staffs have said he was but he doesn't need to be. And yes I agree he was utilized terribly last year.

Well this whole thread (we tend to get off track in these threads so it's easy to forget)was started with Trestman talking to Hester. If Marc thinks he can get his heart in the game then he can stay. If Marc can't get through to him then of course the wise choice is to let him go. It has, but it still happens which is why I threw out the Joe Morgan stat. He had 10 REC LAST YEAR for the 2nd ranked offense. Let me throw out another example that has a connection (though this offense is horrible)...Jim Harbaughs first NFL job was as QB coach for Oakland when Trestman was the OC. His #4 last year was Kyle Williams, who had 14 rec for 212 yards. I wouldn't make that bet because I believe Hester or the late round draft pick can get more than 12 rec even if he is barely utilized.
-
Yep, his WR coach that tooted his horn. Per PFF he had 4 drops in 54 targets, looking at comparisons to others that's not that bad for a #4 receiver. I'm not saying he's anything more than that. But once again, I believe you can find a guy to replace him in the late rounds at a fraction of the cost....So back to my first statement, I wouldn't be outraged if he stays because I believe he can do what needs to be done but I'd rather go wit the cheaper option

Trestman Coordinated offenses #4 WR production is as follows (I obviously don't know who the real 4 is so i'll go with 4th most productive)... 95 9ers- Nate Singleton- 8 REC- 108 yds 96 9ers- Iheanyi Uwaezuoke- 7 REC- 91 yds ....yes that Iheanyi Uwaezuoke. 98 Cards- Fred Brock- 2 REC - 12 yds 99 Cards- Mac Cody- 6 REC- 60 yds 00 Cards- Mac Cody- 12 REC- 212 yds...what an explosion! 02 Raiders- Marcus Knight - 3 REC - 26 yds....Rich Gannons MVP year 03 Raiders- Alvis Whitehead- 7 REC- 106 yds Couple all that with the Joe Morgan and his 10 REC reference I keep using with the Saints and that's what leads me to believe they'll hardly use the #4. The argument could be made that those weren't HIS offenses and he might have "Modernized it" which is possible but we shall see.

Darryl Drake on the other hand is still employed.

Destroy you you say??? (All in good fun) Where'd the 4th rounder go? A safety in the 3rd? Dear god. Who is this Kyle Fauria fellow? Any relation to Joesph Fauria, the TE from UCLA? =p...I'm a fan but I've read he's not that polished, I'd rather grab Toilolo or Escobar in the 3rd. I also think you're spending a bit too much money....looks like you're spending around 24 mill, plus you gotta consider the 3 mill rollover...that 27 mill Also you sure you only have 1 issue twig? There's no WR in sight.
-
Or maybe I've read too much about the west coast offense that I've been sabotaged into believing we won't be using a lot of 4 receiver sets and the fact that a QB/WR relationship is a huge key in the WCO thus me wanting Bennett to still have a role on the team...
-
He possesses the skills to be a #4 receiver in a offense that won't use a #4 that often. But I also think a 5th or 6th round draft pick can too and at a much cheaper clip.
-
Have you seen Devin Hester run north and south? Thats all he has to do.
-
Uh, I'm pretty sure Hester can get down the field quickly still. Telling him to run down the field, on a simple go or slant route really simplifies things. Typically West Coast Offenses utilize 3 receivers. Read more: http://www.kffl.com/article/73828/488#ixzz2Kv6O355Z

Hurray for a #4 receiver in the 2nd round!
-
As of right now, depending what they do in FA. Those 3 positions you mentioned are starters. If you grab a 2nd round WR then you're looking at a 5th round starting OL, LB, or TE.
-
He can catch the ball to the extent that DBs gotta cover him and that's what we're looking for right? Someone to stretch the D who would open up more room in the middle of the field..A deep THREAT. To go back to the Saints example....Joe Morgan only cought 10 balls....I think Hester can duplicate that.
-
What exactly does a guy who blows the top of the defense do? When I think blows the top off I think of a guy who gets down the field quickly to stretch the D....They don't run complicated routes or do the thing that annoys us the most about Hester, running backwards. The "Hester package" was stupid, he was utilized terribly last year.
-
Wouldn't be outraged if Hester stays. There's your guy to blow the top off the defense everyone wants.
-
Like what you said in the PFF thread (above) only I don't view WR in the upper echelon of needs with TE, OL, and LB. It's a need but not as much as the other 3.
-
I'm leaving it open to any combination of the 3, and not exclusively looking at LT (As I'm part of Webb nation =p). I'm not saying we HAVE to go OL first, LB 2nd, TE 4th . At this point, before FA if Ogletree is there at 20 he's my pick, if not then you take the best OL piece no matter where he plays. Since we don't have a 3rd I wouldn't be against reaching if we had to to get a guy we want at any of those 3 positions. Should be a lot of what I believe to be "impact" TEs going between our pick in the 2nd and 4th. I wouldn't hate Gavin Escobar or Levine Toilolo in the 2nd.
-
Just to clarify, if it wasn't clear in my posts, my argument is not that they don't need to add to it, my argument is the bold statement I highlight in your post. IMO they don't need one in the 2nd either.....But that's at this point, my view could change after free agency. As of right now I just think our first 3 picks should be a combo of OL/TE/LB...If they bring in a TE in FA and/or bring 54 and Roach or FA replacements then sure lets go WR in the 2nd. Also good luck to Knox in future endeavors.
-
IMO the writing is already on the walls but we shall certainly see...I think it's gonna be a fun year. I like the dink and doink offense I think it'll be successful.
-
It's yet to be seen of course but with the move to an offensive minded coach I can't imagine it will get ignored again. Idk who was saying the play calling would be better but it sure wasn't me, our OC last year was an OL coach disguised as a OC. Jay was holding onto the ball wayyyyyy to long last year because he rarely had a safety valve underneath, I think that aspect alone will make the offense better. It doesn't matter how many steps you take if you're still holding onto the ball for as long as he did. It's hard to imagine the backs won't play a huge part in the offense....You got Trestman who once had Charlie Garner have 91 REC and 934 receiving yards. Plus you got Kromer coming over from the Saints where there backs bearly had 100 more receptions than our backs. If Forte stays healthy all year and doesn't have more than 70 REC I will be somewhat shocked.
-
Uh, same guys? They're gonna upgrade the line, add a TE, the backs are gonna play a MUCH bigger role basically making them different players. The play calling will be much better. Jeffery is gonna evolve into a player Jay is more comfortable with. Add in your 5th or 6th round receiver who has some wheels to play a decoy and your set with almost a completely different defense despite a lot of the similar guys. But that's all theoretically speaking, I don't thing Tavon Austin or a 5th or 6th rounder will catapult us to the top top but we'll be good either way. As far as your other post....Thats all I'm debating is I don't want them using a 2nd rounder on a WR, I'm just disputing that part. I never said you said we must I'm just saying it's a bad idea IMO.
-
I dont see why they couldn't be with a 5th or 6th rounder....Saints were doing it with 7th rounders and UDFAs.
