With new coaching staff in Place, Briggs wants back
scs787 replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
They werent top 10, but the last 3 years the first DT taken (Aaron Donald, Sheldon Richardson, and Dontari Poe) all made the pro bowl. They may not be taken in the too 10, but they are all worthy. Also, you mention that most of those picks were made with pass rush involved as if Shelton isnt a pass rusher. His size may have you confused, but Shelton certainly is a pass rusher. He was 19th in the nation in sacks and 14th in sacks -
Ya that had to be the dumbest shit I've ever seen....Helluva game though.

I truly believe he's just played out of position his whole career. With Young perhaps out for a bit I think SMC would have the upper hand on Washington, Bass, and Jones at OLB while Young recovers.
-
Yup, even Bennett, who some say "damned" Cutler in his interview on first take, said that some of Jays INTs were on the receivers. There was a clear disconnect all across the whole team offensively and defenisively. Get everyone on the same page, have a coaching staff that knows how to adapt, get the OL healthy and perhaps add a piece or 2 to it, and the offense, with Jay, should flourish.
-
I can agree with pretty much all of this except maybe SMC as an ILB. I think he is still best served at OLB which is what got him a first round grade in the draft.
-
If you could promise me he would stay healthy, I'd say Sam Bradford. But dude is made of glass and you'd have to have a strong backup behind him. Orton probably retires. Foles, Locker, and Sanchez all had worse INT%. Hoyer was just .2 % away. Mallet is somewhat intriguing but impossible to call better. The rest are backups.

Marshall isnt on the list because theres little to no chance he becomes a FA. I got ahead of myself in my desire for him awhile back. Broncos can give him a minimum job and he has to resign. #1 was Rolando McClain. Then Brandon Spikes, Geno Hayes, and Jason Trusnik were 3,4, and 5 in that order. I'm not sure if PFF takes range into account though, I think this just tells us that Briggs was good at making plays when it was in his area. Like DBDB said I think as an ILB, a lot of his range issues get covered up because he won't have to cover as much ground. Another thing I read was in a 3-4 one of the ILBs jobs is to essentially take on whatever OL goes to the 2nd level to keep the other ILB clean. At the right price, I think Briggs would do a pretty good job with this. With any and every LB, unless they come from San Fran there will be uncertainty. I think there's enough potential on thus team right now with guys like Bostic Jones, Sharpton, Dede apparently, SMC in a 3-4, Bass and Washington converting, that if they all battled it out I tthink the coaches would put a good group of 4 guys out there. You can certainly add to that, and I'm sure they will, but I dont see us needing 3 new ones and maybe not even 2. Hell I'd be fine with bringing back Briggs and going with Young-Briggs-Jones/Bostic/Rev-SMC/Washington/Bass but that's me. A guy like Ray in the first or Kikaha in the 2nd certainly does make more since though, esp when you consider Young might not be ready. I'm kinda excited to see if Washington can carve out a role. Rememberthis dude is a freak athlete, and I wouldnt be shocked one bit if he emerges under a new legit coaching staff. -
Cutlers INT% was 3.2....Know what Foles was???? 3.2 Jay also had the higher TD% 4.2 vs 5.0. He's cheaper yes, but I'm not sure hes an upgrade. Overall I'm right there with you in that the way we get rid of Cutler is with a replacement. I may be alone on this but I really think Fox can do what he did in Carolina and Denver and turn this team around in a year, and I think that happens with Jay as the QB.
-
Well we'll just have to agree to disagree on the state of the franchise and the state of the QB position. I see 6 spots on D that need to be filled. CB, 2 safeties, 2 linebackers, and with Ego/Ratliff's versatility 1 d lineman. I really think at least 3 of those can be filled in FA, possibly 4. With how high the Bears are drafting I really think they can come away with 3 suitable starters. A speed WR/KR can be taken late.
-
I think this year with all the money they have, we'll see most, if not all holes filled this year. Unless they're high on one of the QBs not named Jameis or Marcus I just don'tsee it happening. One thing Feely said in his interview is without Cutlers leadership you need someone else to step up. I don't think that necessarily has to be a position player, I think that man will be John Fox. I know we're coming from 2 different sides of the fence here in that I personally think you can win with Cutler and you borderline hate the guy so we'll never see eye to eye on this but ya. I'm not letting Cutler go the year Mark Sanchez is the best QB available in FA and the QB class is incredibly weak.
-
HIGHLY doubt it happens. It is possibke, but ya, I dont see it. Not without a replacement. MAYBE next year as I'm sure that whole thing you wrote about what other teams pay will be added to our cap still holds true (matter a fact I think that's true of every contract with gaurenteed money on it). I think behind Fox's leadership Jay and the offense will have a solid year.

Shelton is much more than just a line eater. Guys like Vince Wilfork, Haloti Ngata, and Dontari Poe are HUGE parts of their respective defenses. Those are guys Shelton gets compared to. Having a guy who can beat double teams is huge. It makes everyone on the front 7 better. Where's mongo with his it all starts up front sig I will also say that I think Ray is a little overrated. That killer first step is nice going up against college teams but its gonna be neutralized at the next level. He'll be good but I don't think he'll be a double digit sack guy.
-
I get your point, but Green Bay hasn't had a top 10 D in 4 year so ya. When they were good they had Raji opening things up for guys like Matthews. Also GB moved Matthews to ILB last year because they couldn't stop the run without Raji. I'm not saying I'm against Ray whatsoever, I just think Shelton is a legit difference maker who will make everyones job easier. I disagree that you couldn't find an OLB in the 2nd. I loves me some Kikaha and think he's gonna be just as good if not better than Ray. Ray at this point like AZ said in another thread is pretty much a one trick pony. Now that one trick, his speed, is damn impressive, but can be neutralized, esp if there's no one that demands a double team and they can throw added attentiion his way. What iI like about Kikaha is his hand use which comes from his martial arts background. Justin Houston, the nfls leader in sacks also credits a lot of his success from working on martial arts techniques. All that being said neither guy Ray or Shelton or really any of the defensive guys on the list would be the wrong choice.
-
Certainly not saying you're wrong, but a nose tackle is arguably just as important if not more. Maybe not NT specifically, but you need someone on the line that demands a double team. San Fran had Justin Smith who consistently demands a double team. We dont have that Justin Smith, JJ Watt, or big bad NT. I think a guy like Shelton would make a guy like Golden or Kikaha in the 2R really good. But this is all arbitrary so we're all entitled to our opinions.
-
I went with Danny Shelton. Getting a guy like him on that front 3 will make the linebackers job much easier. Grab your OLB in the 2R where there will still more than likely be a few guys left.
-
I think a little is the key word in your title.
-
Pff gave him a .5 ranking which means he played average. With Fuller not being the quickest of corners I'm not so sure you want him and Tillman as your 2 starters. As a safety who covers TEs paired with a center fielder type FS I think that would be what is best for this team.

Lance Briggs comes in ranked 2nd on PFFs free agent LB list. He had a 7.6 rating. -
Its been talked about for years now, and I'll say it again, I really think he would need to be open to play safety in order to return. Tillman paired with a more rangey safety could end up being a solid duo.

For those wanting to draft a safety..how about Rahim Moore

I certainly wouldnt be against this. The money would be there. -

I did add the caveat about him getting to expensive which would make me pass. He's one of the few high priced guys that I'd feel confident going after and it not biting us in the ass. I'd throw the before mentioned Justin Houston in that category as well. Looking at the crop of OLBs in the draft though, if I had to choose one high priced guy, it'd be McCourty. All that said I wouldn't be the slightest bit disappointed with Moore. -
Could have sworn it was longer and better than this but here it is http://www.google.com/m?hl=en&source=a...unch+rap+video# Also if youre into hip hop hes got some solid stuff out there http://www.google.com/m?hl=en&source=a...range+dinosaur# Not sure if those links work or not, still getting used to life without a desktop computer.

McCourty is one of the best safties in the league, Moore is merely above average with the potential to be good. Staying with the same HC should further help his development. So the drop off is somewhat big, but only because McCourty is so damn good. Im not so sure this is true. Fox turned around Carolina and Denver in one year. Virginia McCaskey is pissed. Both she and Fox are not getting any younger. The Bears have the 10th most cap room. All those points lead me to believe that we'll be spending every penny available for a quick turnaround. Virginia is a pissed off 92 year old that is tired of losing. I'm not so sure she and the rest of the McCaskeys can/want to wait a few years for this to work. -
Ya, this was brought up in another thread, at this point I really can't see a 3-4 not being run in some fashion.
