Bernstein: Bears ownership met last night. Trestman likely to be fired

Absolutely. On a sidenote, if somehow Emery is saved, you have to think it would be in his best interest to make an impactful hire and probably a safer hire (vs. going way outside the box on Trestman) which again, would point to the logic behind an aggressive push at Harbaugh (or dare I say it Dungy / Cowher / Gruden). I just don't know if any of those other guys would be interested. It really would depend on their views of our overall talent level any one of the guys mentioned bring with them an instant culture change, which is really what we need.

Yeah I think they've got to go with a guy who's coached before on this next hire. Harbaugh would be 1st on my list, followed by Rex Ryan. Cowher has been out of the league for too long IMO, and Gruden just signed an extension with ESPN to stay on board until 2021, so he's not likely going anywhere.

Saw this yesterday from a column written by Ray Ratto and got kind of excited..

Good news in Chicago, where the Bears seem a little more desperate to pay Jim Harbaugh anything he wants to stanch the spectacularly copious bleeding. One door closes, another one opens.

Do it now. Right freakin now. Show every fan shit is going to change. Why wait.

Personally if that is the case, I really don't see why they don't do it. I think the problem is, you fire him and than turn the show over to Kromer (can't do that). You turn it to Tucker? Can't do that. You turn it to Joey D? Can't do that. Only thing you could do is turn it to someone like Hoke as a reward for his loyalty (but is that really a reward). When everything is on fire, you probably just stick it out till the bitter end of the season. But I certainly have no problem doing it now...at least than we don't have to worry about the Bears coming out and shocking the world and winning two consecutive games and the McCaskey's getting cold feet.

Why wait? Fire him now and make a statement to the fanbase. Put an interim coach (Hoke) in for a couple of games and evaluate players for next year.

I would hire a new coaching staff, and let them make the decision on whether to keep or release Cutler. I would rather cut him and move on.

How about someone like Pasquolini (sp?)? Maybe can the whole shooting match then allow him to run it in the interim with an emphasis on putting his mark on the D. That way whoever comes in as HC can decide if he's someone that he would like to keep as DC? Not sure what position Hoke can cover as he seems to have been more a 'bit player' over the years as has Coach P.

if we had half a dozen or so games to goI could see firing him now, but at this point we have 2 games left, do we really gain anything? I know in general we are embarrassed as fans and knee jerk reaction is fire all now for the emotional satisfaction but that is only beneficial if you have someone in house who's capable of taking over and can evaluate. For 2 games you'd have an interim coach trying to evaluate players in a system they won't be running next year. Which is why I feel if we would have fired him earlier this season would have made more sense. But that's never been the Bears style, and I can't recall us ever firing a coach in season. Knowing he's getting canned and possibly Emery too is with 2 games left is good enough for me. I would like to see Harbaugh or Rex Ryan. I agree with the point about Cower being out of the NFL too long though it's not like he hasn't been plugged in and tuned in to what's going on. Unlike Trestman who was away from the NFL for almost a decade. I've always enjoyed Cower's insight. It is too bad about Gruden signing long term to ESPN. He certainly has passion and thought he was going to blow a gasket during the game last night with how furious he was getting with practically everything the Bears did, none of which I disagreed with that I can recall. We definitely need someone with passion and someone who will command respect.

Should Emery go we need to get someone who knows a thing or two about building an NFL roster to win. I get so tired of waiting for draft day only to see us draft like we're the know it all and can find the gems that no one else sees. Not saying buy into the hype on prospects but I know I'm not the only one sick of the WTF head scratching selections where we have to talk ourselves into not being upset about. For once I'd like to see the draft end and feel like we were one of the teams that had a hell of a draft. In recent memory I can only think of a few players we've drafted that actually have made a solid impact on our team. Jeffery, Long, Fuller (early in the season), Carrey has looked good when he's gotten in the game. I get tired of watching other teams draft impact player after impact player and we get these fools gold guys who are often below average to mediocre at best. I have to admit I'm jealous of the Packers being mostly a home grown team where almost their entire roster was drafted and they supplement occasionally with FA to compliment their team. In contrast the Bears build through FA/trades cause ethey can't draft worth crap.

That's what I was thinking…Coach P has been a head coach. Plus he's not the touchy-feely type and we need someone to bring some direction to this roster right now. However, if you fire Trestman (in part because of Kromer-gate) you can't put Kromer in charge of the offense. That won't fly with the players and would make the owners look even worse. Behind those two I don't think there is anyone who can run the offense. I think we're stuck with Trestman for 2 weeks.

Consider the coaching staff gone. I think the more important early decision is about Emery. They need to let him know if he's staying now. If they let this drag on, or worse, decide several weeks into the offseason, then it drags out the head coaching search. We must be in the HC mix early because it's not just head coaches but good assistants we want as well. If we have to do a GM search in front of that then we better start it now.

I think Emery stays in part because of the financial hit, however, he's also done some good things to go along with the bad. I'm 100% on board with Harbaugh being brought in. I wanted him back when he was at Stanford even before the national press talked about him. He hasn't done everything right in SF but coaches learn and improve their ways too. Even if he doesn't change, I'd live with 3 years of what the 49ers did prior to this season. They'd be in the playoff hunt again this year if they weren't missing some key players on defense. Dumb luck doesn't get you that deep in the playoffs three years straight.
