Redskins Interested in Cutler

Rumor out of Washington that Snyder is interested in Cutler and is considering swapping picks and sending us Kirk Cousins for Jay Cutler. I presume he is tired of drafting QB's and figures that would give the Skins a bit more stability. For us, Cousins is someone we could at least utilize a bit while we use the Redskins pick to draft a franchise QB (if think he is in this draft).

Obviously no deal is going to be made now, but man that would be awesome!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the cap hit is the same whether we trade or cut him so I doubt this happens.

I don't think that's accurate. Adam Schefter was on ESPN not too long ago saying that Cutler has generated some interest around the league and that the Bears could save like 12M or so by launching him to another team. I need to find the full quote.

Here it is:

The Chicago Bears are not as exclusively tied to quarterback Jay Cutler as his seven-year contract would indicate.

The Bears would save $12.5 million against the salary cap if they were able to trade Jay Cutler after the season.

Cutler's $15.5 million salary for next season is guaranteed, based on a review of the deal, but there might be another team willing to take it on, relieving the Bears if the team made the decision to try to trade him.

And based on talks with a handful of teams around the league, there would be interest in Cutler, according to multiple league sources.

Any team willing to trade for Cutler would also take on the $16 million of guarantees for the 2016 season.

Cousins is horrible, but I would do it in a heartbeat to get out of that contract.

Right now the Redskins pick 5th.

Jacksonville and Oakland are 3rd and 4th and neither need a QB. The Titans need a QB at number 2. Lovie and Tampa is first and need a QB, but will he draft one.

I'm not sure if QB worth the 5th pick will be there. But the Bears could get Mariotta or Winston if either Tampa or the Titans doesn't go QB. If the Bears stay at their pick, they also have the Jets and Skins that could be looking QB.

Hate to break the bad news but the Redskins don't have a 1st because of the rg3 draft day deal. But since it's Snyder I'll give him Cutler for cousins and 2nd rd pick this yr and 1st Nxt yr. Hell I know it's not gonna happen but this is Snyder. Lol

Nah, the Rams already used up their last Redskins pick when they drafted Robinson #2 overall in the 2014 draft.

WB Twig btw

I think the logic is that you rid yourself of Cutler, give Cousins a shot to start while drafting a legit QB this season to replace him and let him hit the bench.

I would never trade Cutler for Cousins with the thought in mind that Cousins is the starter. I would be comfortable with him as a backup, but nothing more.

I'd figure out who my HC was going to be and have him make decisions on Cutler. Anything else and you're doing to him what's been done to the last few Bears coaches. Let the football guy make the football decisions. Period!

And if it's Harbaugh, I'll bet he can get a lot better out of Cutler than we've seen. But it's his call.

I really want to have a new President and GM and Coaching staff in place before any personnel moves are made. Who knows who will be fired.

My Wish list

1. Ted Phillips

2. Phil emery

3. Coaching staff

Did any of you guys know that Emery kept a bunch of scouting guys from the JA era. The same scouts that worked for JA are still on staff. I heard this on the radio today, I would have thought Emery would have hired his own guys.

If Ted is going to stay on as the President then I want the new GM to make all decisions on personnel.

My biggest want is for the Bears to be run by the right people. After that if Cutler stays or is traded I really don't care. The Bears short term and long term success depends on getting the right people in place.

Who knows maybe the right fix is only getting the coaching staff in place, maybe a different staff could win with the guys we have and some additions.

Just saw this, completely agree with you.

I would bet Harbaugh could get a whole lot better out of Cutler and the entire team.

If the players do not respect Trestman the real problem goes a lot deeper than Cutler. With saying that I not saying Cutler should not be playing better.

If Cutler wasn't being paid 22 million dollars this year it wouldn't seem so freakin bad.

Are you guys freaking serious?

After 10 years, you think a new coach will get more out of Cutler? How? I mean that is just a ridiculous.

If a new coach or GM came in claiming he can get more out of Cutler, I'd go to the next candidate.

And why would Harbaugh be the one? Keapernick has regressed every year in San Fran and they are regretting the big deal they gave him.

Cutler has to go, to do otherwise is just setting the team back another couple years.

If you are correct then why would anyone trade for him?

I've seen enough... Time for Cutty to go.

Let's be honest here...it's not like Harbaugh turned Kaepernick into some supreme QB... Garbage in, garbage out...

I believe if you trade him, you benefit from the cap perspective (12M in savings) but also I think we get a legitimate cash savings, which would be huge in the eyes of the McCaskey's and might help influence them to spend some more money on a coach / front office tandem, etc.

Now this agree with 100%. Having real dollars not going to Cutler who certainly hasn't earned his $$$ so far is something that immediately benefits the team. I'm just not sure where the $12 million is coming from. I guess if someone else pays him the guaranteed money it drops off our cap. That must be it.

As to us being "freaking serious" I most certainly am. If you bring in a coach, whether it be Harbaugh or someone else, in this league they damn well better be able to assess a QB, make a decision and then get the MOST out of him. If you don't believe in your new HC candidate that much, you probably ought not hire them. I'm not saying keep Cutler, I'm saying that decision belongs to the next Head Coach.

Exactly. As I said, if a candidate's plans involve Cutler, I would move on to the next candidate. He is bad, and the team needs to move on. Letting a new HC decide, is like firing Trestman but keeping Tucker and letting the new coach decide on him.

On Cutler's cap hit if there is a trade, the new team assumes the contract. However, the Bears have 5 million prorated over 4 years. Cutler's salary next year is 15.5m +1 million of the prorated money, so a 16.5 million cap number.

If he is traded, he will only count the 4 million left over of the prorated 5 million. It's a saving of 12.5 million.

Thanks for the cap analysis. That looks right to me.

As to the decision on Cutler, I wouldn't eliminate a HC candidate just because he believed he could work with Cutler. For one thing, it'll be a first year in a new system and the team is BAD now so I don't expect 16-0 next year no matter what happens. Further, the trade offers out there for Cutler right now are just rumors. If someone is willing to take him and you've narrowed the field on your HC choice, THEN I'd ask them their opinions so as to see what each would do given the real opportunity to "start over". Their responses could be exactly what puts one candidate "over the top" on the others.

Let's just hope this goes better than the last time we did this. Trestman hasn't proven to be a better choice than Lovie, IMO. The whole point of making changes like this is improvement. So here's to the Bears going out and finding a real football guy to take this team to the next level. My fear is they're going to keep looking for the nice guy who sells tickets and not the ballbreaker who gets the most out of his players.
