bowlingtwig
Amazing that ppl want to start clausen next yr now. Do I dare say that if it wasn't for 2 special teams blunders that Detroit made we get shut out. And it's not like clausen had a great day at all. He was OK. but that's as far you can really take it. I like Clausen as a back up. Being an Irish fan I liked him then. Though in college he was frustrating at times.

I like Clausen as a back up. Being an Irish fan I liked him then. Though in college he was frustrating at times. I wouldn't want him as a starter based off one game, but he did many things right that Cutler does wrong. I'd want him over Cutler. I'd be fine if him starting, if a drafted rookie wasn't ready. If Cutler comes back next year, he will be here the next 2. 10 Million dollars becomes guaranteed of the 2016 year, if he is still on the team the third day of the new NFL year in March. Personally, I think next year will be some what of a building year. There are just too many pieces that need filled on defense, and a few on offense to be competing for the Super Bowl. I really don't care who starts next year, as long as it isn't Cutler and his replacement is drafted this year.
'TD'
How about Teryl Austin as a potential HC? His first year with the Lions and the D has lived up to and past it's potential this year. It's his first year as a DC, but the change is massive.Caldwell is an offensive coach, so hard to credit him for the change in the team. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lion...coach/20607063/ Austin has reached Super Bowls as a defensive backs coach with the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens, where he won a championship, and he spent one year on Urban Meyer's staff as defensive coordinator at Florida. There is almost no doubt now in my mind that Cutler is not the right one for this system. With essentially two journeymen able to come in and run it effectively then there is no question they wasted all that money on Cutler. IF Clausen were able to continue to play like he did today then yes I'd be ok if he started. Like to first see how he does next week before I finalize my judgement. Speaking of a Cutler deal with the Titans. How about the Bears make a deal straight up for Locker?

Speaking of a Cutler deal with the Titans. How about the Bears make a deal straight up for Locker? "This system" will most likely not be the same system they run next season. I did like the moxy Clausen showed. You can hear and see him run the offense before the snap. I am not sure he if he is the answer at QB, but he showed how it should look like. The only way I would want to see Cutler traded is if we recieved good compensation. The rumor of it would cost a 2nd for a team to take his salary would be crazy for the Bears to do. They will have a lot of cap room next season with his salary regardless. To be honest, the benching may be the best thing for him. He will have to compete to become a starter again and if he screws up enough I wouldn't hesitate to sit him again. Only a week away for the firework show to start. Should be interesting to see how serious McKaskeys are.
AZ54
Clausen looked good considering it was his first crack at it. Take away that veneer and OTOH the offense looked the same. Clausen should have been picked off in the end zone. We had the INT late in the game….not a whole lot different than how many of our last drives end when Cutler is the QB. Now whatever Clausen did to get Tucker to play aggressive man coverage on the corners...I like that. We know what Clausen did (or couldn't do in the passing game) to get Trestman to call more running plays. But that begs the question: If it's a lack of productive QB play that drove him to call those runs why wasn't that done when Cutler was under center and playing poorly? Where's Chucky? I want to know if it's Clausen's fault we had false starts? Or dropped passes? That was Jeffrey's worst game since we drafted him and had he played as he normally does Clausen may have looked like a good.

Readin defenseses, progressing though reads and so on Clausen looked better today. If Clausend looked better, than it;s glaring faults in Cutler. The run plays. Cutler got his audible ability taken away for one game, because he kept checking to the wrong play earlier in the year. THey would often call a play that would be run or pass, and the call would be based on the d. Cutler ran the D wrong al year, so you can't say they called a different game nand ran more, until you know if those were the calls, clausen let those plays develop or the coaches wanted a different play. Claussen didnt do anything special, just didnt look terrible. I am off the Cutler bandwagon but there will be not much in options. We might find someone that wont turn the ball over as much, which would be better, but terrible choices is he leaves.
bowlingtwig
I'm just shocked at all the ppl defending clausen after this game. Truly shocked. If Cutler had the same exact game everyone would be pointing out the facts that we got helped by Detroit being dumb otherwise we get shut out. Instead ppl are looking at clausen as a possible starter? What world am I living in where everyone just rips Cutler to shreds regardless of what happens. The guy literally has to have an absolutely perfect game just to get 1 person to say he's good. While clausen has this kind of game and ppl thinks he's good. I'm mean seriously. Come on. I'm not sitting here claiming that either should be here. Just pointing out what I have seen. Serious question why in the world would any QB want to come and play in Chicago. This is how we have treated every starting QB for 20 yrs that I can think of. I know I wouldn't.

Dude, please stop.........You were right about Cutler. He is not a franchise QB. You don't need to talk Clausen up to make your Cutler argument sound better. Clausen looked good for the first time starting today. You have NO clue on what plays were called with Cutler and what plays were changed by Cutler. Trestman is the only one to blame for never running the ball. He said it every week, didn't do it until this past week. Even if Cutler changed a run play to a pass play, Trestman is the HC, he should have went to Cutler on the sidelines and said do not change any plays, we are going to run the ball. Trestman chose to not run the ball all year. There is no arugment against it. You can blame Cutler on the turnovers he created, but you cant blame Cutler for play calls week in and week out. This is how we have treated every starting QB for 20 yrs that I can think of. I know I wouldn't. I saw that you essentially posted this twice so I'm sure you're waiting for a contrarian viewpoint. I'll try to do my best at not sounding like; "I told you so". First and foremost, Cutler has little or no leadership skills. Over the course of his 10 (or so) years he has yet to exude some level of leadership. I'm not talking Peyton Manning or Tom Brady level just Franchise QB level. He's being paid it, should be at least acting the part. Instead, he'd just assume sulk on the sidelines and blame other players for his mistakes. Granted, this year he showed SOME improvement but if only for a little. Secondly, the guy is the highest paid player in the NFL right now. But what do we as a team have to show for it? The only thing he's leading in the NFL right now is turnovers. Obviously someone (Trestman and/or Emery) made a bad analysis on Cutler's abilty to effectively run an offense thusly made a bad choice to pay him as well as they did. Why was not franchise tagging him an option for this year? Why go all in and look foolish one short year later? Mark Schlereth (by the way a graduate from here in Alaska) made some interesting observations regarding Cutler last week while on "Mike and Mike". He compared Jay to Romo and how until this year the two were essentially close duplicates of one another. However they did something different this year with Romo. They reduced his number of throws. Something like 600(ish) per year to around 400 where he's not having as many as '3 and outs' because of the more number of missed passes. Thusly the defense isn't as gassed and can play better. Until this year, Dallas was a perennial 8-8 team for at least the last 3 years. Other things they did was build up the Oline and increase their run ability. (ala DeMarco Murray). If Cutler is opting out of the run on his own, then that is another problem. I used to think that Jay should have been able to audibilize more often. However in seeing him play and hearing others comment about his inability to do it correctly, I don't know that its a good idea. I'm still of the mindset that he gets tunnel vision when he throws sometimes. Especially under pressure. So yes, I expect near perfection from a player being paid to produce it. scs787
Another thing that's different from this years version of Romo vs previous years is they gave him an awesome OL in front of him. I still think that's the biggest difference between this year and last for bears, OL play. You can call it Jay getting tunnel vision or seeing ghosts or what have you but someone, whether it be Jay or Trestman seems to be dialing it back because the OL isn't allowing them to do what they did the year before. I think Jay with good protection can have a Promo type year...Evidence being in his pro bowl year he was sacked 1.8% of the time. This year its been 6.4% (last year 5.5)...This year when he's gotten time he's also looked fairly good, even though play calling still may have held things back in anticipation of bad OL play. Call me crazy but I wouldn't mind the bears going after Brandon Schreff or Ronnie Stanley in the first round and taking the Oregon center in the 3rd. That of course is only possible if they hit on some defensive players in FA (which they still have plenty of money to do so). Again that ideally means we bring in KJ Wright and Louis Delmas the take the best CB available in the 2nd.
scs787
Also the whole highest paid qb thing is a little overblown. His contract was front loaded. His average salary is 7th and that's with guys like Luck, Wilson, Newton, and Foles all still on their rookie contracts. Luck and Wilson will no doubt get paid more on average and with the cap going up its certainly possible that both Foles and Newton get paid more on average as well. So in a year or 2 he prob wont even be in the top 10 on average and def wont be near the top 10 that year because of the build of his frontloaded deal.
