adam
It looks like Gase was offered the SF HC job, but only if Tomsula was his DC. He said no, and would keep Fangio or look to get an Assistant from Cincinnati. SF said no to Gase and Fangio and then pushed Tomsula up from DLine to HC. AZ54
This is interesting and both of these guys, Fangio and Gase, decided to come to Chicago to prove their point working alongside John Fox and Ryan Pace. I don't think they came her believing this was a long term rebuilding situation.

I dont think anybody takes the job thinking being 3 years away, but to be competitive next year they have to hit on all off season moves and have some unproven talent we didnt see last year take a big leap. Our schedule is much worse than last year.
adam
Also, based on both of their squad's performances (Gase offense, Fangio defense), it would be hard for me to believe they would take a bottom of the barrel job just to have one with so many other options available for both coordinators. They had to see something they liked. The offense played way lower than expectations and if Gase can get us back to a top 10 offense, he will look like a genius, even if he just rights the ship and gets everyone playing to their potential. Fangio has more work to do, but if he can bring one of the worst defenses back to respectability, he will be the new "defense whisperer". I also thought this was eerily similar to the Marinelli thing with Emery during the Trestman hire, when we passed on Arians and McCoy. Now SF has taken that to a new low by not even getting a new coach put elevating a positional coach (not even a Coordinator) to HC.
BearFan2000
Perhaps we have passed the torch to SF for league laughing stock. Regardless of how things went down they happened and I'm thrilled they happened. We finally have a professional level coaching staff, it's now up to the players to play at a pro level. As Adam mentioned the offense under performed, the D was just bad, and it's hard to really tell if there's usable pieces or how many usable pieces are there it was that big of a mess. We could be close to fielding a competent D or we may be a long way off from that. That said if true it proves what we know about forcing a coach on a potential head coach or GM or whatever. Any HC or GM worth is salt will want to have his pick of who he wants to build his staff. If he wants to keep the guy you like great but let him make that call not have that call taken from him. You severely limit your options and in many cases put yourself out of the running for some of the best candidates out there. The Tomsula thing is more or less the York family wanting a puppet who's just a yes man. He's essentially an unwitting pawn who seems to have no awareness of just how in over his head he is. It's mind boggling to think that they went from Harbaugh to this dolt. A team that was making a serious run at the title recently may now be plunged into new lows. 'TD'
I don't think they had many options left on the table. Gase and Fangio were held hostage by San Fran. They had a verbal agreement with Gase to be a head coach and Fangio wasn't allowed to interview with other teams. By the time San Fran made their move to Tomsula, both coaches were left with few options. If they wanted to coach this year, the Bears were one of the few guaranteed jobs for the coaches. I'm not sure it says much about the Bears ability to turn it around. It just says the Bears and familiarity with John Fox is a better option than Jacksonville for Gase, and the job security with the Bears situation is more appealing for Fangio than the Skins situation with Gruden. There were still options for Gase after SF hired Tomsula. He had just interviewed with Denver for HC, and was basically locked in as the Ravens OC or Jags OC (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000460754/article/adam-gase-expected-to-land-with-jaguars-or-ravens). We were not even in play. There were also rumors of him linked to CLE, BUF, NYJ, and ATL. Fangio was a little different as it was down to us and Washington, but he became available a lot later than other candidates. I am sure he would've had a lot more offers if he was available from late December like the others. Even if it was just the "Fox-effect" it is nice to see us get true quality hires at HC and the coordinators. Have we ever had such an accomplished coaching staff in the organization? Ditka/Ryan from 84-85? Other than that, I don't think we have had a trio like this before.

I absolutely love he coaching staff. I just think there was a lot of luck involved in getting them, which the Bears could use.
