Combine updates

A 4.6 flat but his 10 yard split was the same as Beasley. His 3 cone drill, which is perhaps the best drill to look at, was a rather unimpressive 7.40 though. For reference Beasley ran a 6.91.

You summed up in numbers what I was going to say about watching Fowler. Fowler has the straight line speed but he does not appear to be nearly as flexible in space (turn and run, change of direction) as Beasley. What Fowler has though is much more size and any team that values having a guy who can set the edge in the run game will most likely prefer to have Fowler among this group.

For me we can have Willie Young, Jared Allen, Washington, or Jones play that role in the run game. IMO Beasley showed enough power to handle himself ok in the run game and for our roster I value the guy who is the better passer rusher.

I have to add that Randy Gregory impressed me a lot. I know he checked in very light at 235lbs but his frame can easily handle another 10-15lbs. He said he had been the sick the week before the combine and lost some weight. He's not as fast as Beasley but has very long arms, and we know from video he has very quick and violent hands to get off blocks. In the open field his change of direction was unreal for a guy this tall. He can pass rush, and drop into coverage with those skills but he has the frame and arm length to develop into a very good run defender. I have to go back and watch highlights of both Beasley and Gregory. Shane Ray will put up speed agility results similar to Beasley so he's still in the OLB mix.

I think Fowler has set himself as the best 4-3 DE with Gregory and Beasley showing themselves as purely 3-4 OLB. Mariota did well enough that he'll be gone before we pick. Knowing that we should have one of the two, Gregory or Beasley, there when we pick. I haven't walked away from Shane Ray either.

Ya, Gregory and Beasley are my top 2 picks ATM.

I haven't walked away from Ray just yet either, but I'm hoping his pro day is televised because I'm not yet 100% sold on him either. Esp. after reading this..

An NFL scout said there's "no way in hell" Missouri DE Shane Ray "can be an outside 'backer," and believes Ray will soon fall on draft boards.

"I don't like him," the scout told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "People see who he is, they're going to fall off him quick. The body structure. No way in hell he can be an outside 'backer." At the moment, Ray's stock remains healthy. The NFL Media analysts who mock draft all project Ray to be gone anywhere from the Jaguars at No. 3 to the Falcons at No. 8. "Competitive, smart and reliable," the above scout added. "Wins with effort, urgency and great first step. He has a degree of stiffness. He's got to win with quickness because of his lack of size and strength." A different scout added: "He's better than the guy (Kony Ealy) from there last year. Little straight-line."

The nice deal is we will get one of them. Will have no problem with Fowler,Gregory,Dupree,Beasley or Ray. IN that order.

This draft is something else. There is 5 names the Bears can go with. Throw in Winston, Mariota, Williams, Cooper, White, Parker, Scherff and Shelton and the teams that draft them will feel good. The Bears could move down 2-3 spots and come out good.

that would be nice to get a deal with cleveland and get a 12 and 19 and could still get a Dupree or Ray at that slot. 19 then could give us the big fat guy.

Beasley and Fowler are probably my top two guys. Beasley's arms are gigantic. Fowler is damn near perfect size for a LB.

These guys are easy to fall in love with and would fall inline of a need say two years down the road. If you look at the roster composed right now, OLB would be a log jam. McClellin, Young, Allen, Washington, will all be fighting for spots. I'm not against at taking one, just throwing out they may go a different route. Positions in the red are Safety and think we should absolutely fill that in FA and a 3-4 DE. Yellow (2nd biggest need) is DT, CB, OT, TE, C, RB, and WR. Green needs are upgrades: OLB, QB.

How we fill these needs will be fun
