I'm on fence too. Like that he is 26 and can play multiple positions. Not liking that he has never been a full time player and read that he may have had issues with both knees.

 

16 MIL for the first two years, and if he dont pan out, gone with rest of contract. He fills the Smith role on Fangios 49er D.

As you see here, Stinger is spot on with saying he fills the Smith role. Aldon was used with hand in the dirt and in a 2 point stance just like McPhee.

Dude was stuck behind Suggs and Dumervil. Hard to fault him for that.

Paul Kruger played the McPhee role before McPhee (Both bigger OLBs who also played with their hands in the dirt), and he racked up 11 sacks last year in Cleveland. Ironically both players got 5 year 40M contracts.

 

Jameel McClain had 116 tackles for the Giant last year.

 

Arthur Jones was considered a really good run stuffer for the Colts. They gave up 4.6 yards per carry and 12 rushing touchdowns in 7 games without him in the lineup to just 3.7 yards per carry and two rushing touchdowns in 9 games with him in the lineup.

 

James Ihedigbo was a pro bowl alternate.

 

Corey Graham was the 8th ranked CB by PFF, and was the Bills team captain.

The reason, the perception is they dont succeed when leaving Ravens is they get paid big money. They are projecting a player on the rise that fits our scheme. There is risk in that like all FA signing usually are. Optimistic it will turn out well.

Sure Paul Kruger only had 4.5 sacks his first year in Cleveland but he also had 51 pressures which is pretty damn good. I know some here don't buy into the whole "pressure is production" line of thinking but it's true. Those pressures by Kruger turned into sacks the following year. Just like how Willie Young had a lot of pressures in 2013 and those turned into a 10 sack season in 2014.

Good point on Kruger, I had the same questions about him when he signed with the Browns. Seeing that as a full time starter he still produced makes me feel better about this signing.

 

 

 

I hope this guy is as good as his rankings were last year if not better. Playing every down is a whole lot different then being the relief guy. It could help him get into a groove better.

I could care less about the "former Ravens who underperformed" tag. This guy is legit. He came from a top notch defense and produced. If you watch his highlights, he continually wins 1v1 battles. He also played all over for the Ravens. Other 3-4 teams would be lauded for picking him up, but when the Bears do, it is "risky".

 

I see him energizing other guys like Young, Houston, Bostic, Ferguson, and Jones in the front 7.

 

I guess, there's an "out clause" that could make this just a 1 year 8.75M deal if McPhee doesn't work out.....Which I'm sure he will.
