What is a catch anymore

Was watching the Giant's vs Cheatriots and the potential go ahead TD for the Giants stood out to me. Beckham has possession, with 2 feet in the end zone, then the ball is ripped out by the DB it's ruled no catch.... That brought me back to the Lions game where Golden Tate barely had possession for even a split second before it's ripped out and intercepted. Yet Tate is awarded a TD, Beckham is awarded and incomplete pass. Can someone explain why Tate's was and Bechkham's wasn't. To me if Beckham's wasn't neither should Tates. I know the rules get muddier and muddier with each "judgement" call. But that play last night reinforces that we got screwed.

It's absolute unmitigated BS. You're 100% right and I thought the same thing when I saw it. This is the legacy of one of the worst commissioners in the history of the NFL. He just has to tweak shit nobody cares about like making extra points into circus acts while not addressing clear issues with the rulebook. The announcers made it clear that NOBODY knows how to call these things anymore.

It's getting to the point that the college game is much more appealing to me. If a 50 year old Bears fan for the last 45 years is feeling this way, the NFL better get their shit together.

No. The two plays are identical except one helps the Patriots and one does not.

So my question is, if Butler stripped the ball out and then caught it himself inbounds, would that have been ruled an INT?

Same for Tate's, if Fuller just pulled the ball to the ground, would that have been just an incompletion?

For us, it seems like they didn't want to give us the INT, but would've given us the incompletion. One of the most subjective calls in all of sports.

I always presume the refs in the Bears / Lions game thought it was a 50/50 call and given the Lions were screwed out the prior week (Seahawks - Lions game where the Seahawks should have lost), they decided to rule in favor of the Lions. That said, we obviously aren't the only ones confused and the whole league needs to come up with something more conclusive. It was easier to figure out what a catch was 10 years ago then it is now...how the heck is that supposed to make sense. Rules are supposed to get better and easier, not the other way around.

So here is a crazy one, what if a player jumps straight up for a ball and lands on two feet stationary with the ball held with two hands.

At what point does it become a catch if he is not moving (making a football move or becoming a runner)? Is there a time limit? Since he is not making a 3rd step (he hasn't become a runner) and hasn't made a football move. When is the catch completed? Can a DB go over there 1-2 seconds later and knock the ball out? If he gets tackled 2 seconds later and the ball comes out when he is taken to the ground, is it incomplete? Shouldn't the play end when his knee or other body part touch the ground?

To me there needs to be two rules for catches, contested and uncontested. If you catch the ball and there is no defender in contact with you, and you get two feet down and catch the ball, it is immediately a catch. If you are in the end zone, the play ends and it is a TD. If the player gets stripped in the field of play after this point, it is a fumble. For contested catches, if a defender is in contact with the receiver, then they must get two feet inbounds with a 3rd step or body part touching (in or out of bounds) to the complete the catch. If the ball gets stripped before the 3rd step, then it is incomplete. In the same sense, if you make an contested catch, have two feet on the ground, then go to the ground and your elbow hits the ground, you are down. If the ball comes out, the ground can't cause a fumble, so it shouldn't cause an incompletion either.

all the if this and if that stuff on a what is/isn't a catch proves how dumb this is and how subjective it is. Rule should be two feet down in the end zone with clear possession = TD. When it's left up to interpretation on has he made a football move or become a runner, it gets to the point where we are where no one really knows what is or isn't. We have way too many arbitrary make it up as you go type ruling because the rules are either too complex or to vague. Same goes for roughing, holding, PI, etc.

Great example. Tate was but Beckham wasn't......I don't get it and don't like it either.

Det and Minny keep pissing me off because we could be sitting at 6-3...........How much different would things be with that record.

Forget about that. We need to simply look forward. Play smart & hard. The chips will fall where they may. This season is a huge build into something potentially very strong next season.

You are right. 6-3 just sounds soooooo freakin great. Looks like the Bears are building something to be excited about!

Agree with your overall sentiment as well (the progress is what we should all be excited about). 6-3 would be great but we could have just as easily lost 3 of our wins (Chiefs / Raiders / Chargers). So realistically, given the bounces, I'd say we probably should have 1 more win (cause we did a lot of dumb things from a special teams perspective as well) but we also had some total steals. Guarantee the Chiefs fans think that they should have a win against the Bears (vs. the other way around).
