I still think odds are pretty high Pace surprises most of us and drafts a QB early. If not moves up for a QB. I think if he can hit on a ton of needs in FA, it makes it even more likely he capitalizes on the QB now (presuming he likes one and some people with good connections indicate there is at least one QB in this class Pace is very high on), knowing you can transition with Jay for a year or two and buy time for the QB to develop (both Paxton / Wentz would fit the mold of draft in round 1, while needing some time on the bench).

Cutler is much more moveable a year from now as well and you could probably get an asset if you are ready to make the move than.

Putting my prejudice aside, I think this would be the year to trade him.

  1. He is coming off a year that he is getting praised for.
  2. His value should be higher than last year, without the risk of decline with an off year this year.
  3. His contract would be favorable to teams that trade for him as the guarantee money will just be in this first year, and it is a one to three year contract compared to two next year.

The problem is, I don't many teams that would likely be in the market for him. Most teams that were in the market for QB have filled their need(Houston, Eagles, Redskins), likely looking to get younger(Saints, Browns), or have a biased against Cutler(Jets and Broncos). I am not sure I see a likely landing spot.

Agree 100%. You've got the coverage guy (which is the harder spot to fill). Now go to the draft and get your "run and hit" ILB whether it's Ragland, Lee, Cravens, Wright, whoever.

I am starting to like Josh Forrest as the bigger ILB, and he is from Kentucky too. He is no slouch in pass coverage either. His combine 40 time needs to be taken with a grain of salt. He was one of the few players that had flu symptoms and should not have run. 6-3 249 33-1/2" arms. 4.78 and 4.85 40 times. I am throwing him out there as a, rd 4, prospect that could possibly bring similiar aspects as Ragland.

Absolutely don't want to give up a 2nd round pick for a guy who is a slightly above average LB. The Bears would be better just drafting an ILB in the first few rounds to pair up with Trevathan, and pay him the rookie contract.

Not sure where your coming from with the slightly above average comment. Marshall is really good. I know you hate PFF but he ranked as their 6th best ILB.

I would do it, but that's just me. Outside of maybe Jack I gaurentee he's better than any rookie they can draft.

Yes but grabbing two LBs in the 7-8 range and losing a 2nd rounder, hurts us from adding other FAs to the team. Add one and draft one and spend the money at another position.

Also heard that Atlanta jumped into the mix, not a done deal. At least it will drive up the price, so we are not done with this yet.

We aren't going to be a great team giving up picks, plus signing a guy to a big contract. It will take cap space and cost us the opportunity at a cheap, high caliber player. Under no circumstances am I interested in Marshall. That opinion might change if we had a back end 2nd round pick or I thought we were a player away from winning a championship. We are not in that position and thus shouldn't be giving away draft picks for guys we need to give big money too, unless they are total franchise changes (i.e., I'd give up the house if it gave us a shot at Aaron Rodgers, Cam or Andrew Luck for example).

Schefty indicating it isn't done, despite some other reports.

The two teams now making the strongest push for Broncos free-agent LB Danny Trevathan are Atlanta and Chicago, per sources.

I really hope this is more posturing on Atlanta's part, and he already has his mind made up. We have basically double the cap space as them, but I don't want to get in a bidding war either.

I would say they made an offer, so he will go back to the Bears if their offer is for more money. He was with Foxy in Denver so we have the upper hand anyway you look at it.

Falcons have 27 mil in cap space. needs- WR and OLinemen so they may not be able to up money on Trevathan

Technically speaking Marshall came out of college (Nevada) listed as an OLB and has had some experience in the position. Or, as someone else mentioned, Trevathan is more a coverage LB which would make sense in his being able to play OLB if need. And still technically speaking, Trevathab was listed as an OLB also coming out of college. So what's to say they couldn't bring he and Trvathan and still draft an ILB (Jack, Ragland or Lee) too?

After DL and LB you need what; one safety and maybe a CB? I see maybe bringing in Ayers could fill the DLine up sufficiently. On the offensive side you can draft a need player (OL or even QB) and still get a few quality FAs to boot.

Haven't looked into it, but I'm guessing they were 4-3 OLBs not 3-4 OLBs.

In response to other posters, the Bears IMO, have the cap space to make the move. I think Marshall would fetch the same amount as Trev, and as I posted in my ideal mock offseaon, they can manage making the move.

Kentucky has a 3-4 and Nevada a 4-3. If I recall on some reading I had done I thought Denver brought Marshall over (after being drafted in JAX) with the intent of using him as an OLB. I may be mistaken.

If you do that, that is 7-8 mil we dont buy other FAs with. Of course that would be great but they simply will not do that. I would rather have Jeff Allen and David Burton that would up grade two positions instead the one free agent.

I do think its highly unlikely, and that's why the thread I made was titled a "Dream", but they would absolutely have the money for Allen and Bruton even with the investment in both LBs.

If the rumors of Bennett and Rolle being gone come to fruition, even after signing Trev (assuming the deal is around a 7M cap hit) they would have about 48M.

Marshall would be nice, but would cost too much. His contract alone would be 8 million we'll figure. Then figure the value of the draft pick if they take a DT who can become the next Malik Jackson, 10-15 value. The Bears are better off re-signing Shea and drafting a prospect. They are not in a Superbowl or bust mode this year, so build economically through FA and smart through the draft.

This is more likely posturing on the part of Trevathan to get a little more out of Chicago before he signs. I wouldn't expect anything less from his agent because that's what he's paid to do for Trevathan.

Agreed!

I also think pairing Ragland with Trevathan would give us a very solid ILB group. Ragland would also be the blitz LB, something Trevathan reportedly isn't that good at. I watched more video of Darron Lee tonight and he's just not stout at the point of attack. He might grow into that but I like the idea of having one physical ILB on the field. When Timu was out there late in the season he stood out for that reason.

Drafting Ragland is no sure thing and after him options gets a little murkier. I think SMC could be lured back with a 1 year deal, probably for much higher than anyone here would pay him. That would give him time to get more comfortable in the role and then seek his big deal. Gives us two chances (this year and next) to find a rookie in the early rounds to develop. Last year SMC had nobody with 3-4 ILB experience to help him on the field. With Trevathan out there it could help him to steady his performance. If SMC turns into what we want then we have plenty of cap space to sign him to a long term deal next year.

If we do get Trev, then Ragland is the perfect fit at the other spot. Draft him and the LBs are set for several years. Grab Scooby a little later as a guy who can fit inside or outside, and provides a dynamic pass rush from time to time.

The defections in Denver continue.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan is leaving for Chicago.

The soon-to-be-26-year-old linebacker is a good fit for the Bears, and well familiar to coach John Fox who had him with the Broncos. The link has been there for days, but now the deal is done.
