Searching for Von Miller

BPA this year could become a reality. Some have floated QB and RB, but I honestly think it might mean the Bears go searching for their Von Miller prototype.

Von Miller - 6'3", 254#, 4.53 forty, 33.5 arms, 37" vert., 10.6" broad, 6.7 3-cone

Prospect A - 6'3", 270#, 4.70 forty, 32.75arms, 33" vert., 12" broad, 7.16 3-cone

Prospect B - 6'5", 250#, 4.82 forty, ?? arms, 32" vert., 9.7" broad, 6.97 3-cone

Prospect C - 6'5", 275#, 4.86 forty, 34 arms, 30.5" vert., 9.2" broad, 7.18 3-cone

Prospect D - 6'6", 244#, 4.60 forty, 33.2 arms, 39.5" vert., 10.58" broad, ???

So who jumps off the page? The only thing that made my eyes pop were the 12" broad jump from Prospect A, and the 39.5 vertical from Prospect D. All things considered, Prospect D is pretty much a match, minus a little playing weight. Which is interesting because that's what everyone says Prospect D needs to work on.

All things considered, I think the Bears could end up with one of these guys in the first, and I think it might be the fourth guy.

Prospect A is Shaq Lawson.

Prospect B is Shilique Calhoun.

Prospect C is Kevin Dodd.

Prospect D is Leonard Floyd.

BTW - This makes some sense since DE is so deep. The Bears could easily wait until the 2nd or 3rd and pick up someone like Kaufusi, Oakman, or Nassib.

I wish there was a Von Miller in this years draft, but it wouldnt matter the Bears won too many games to draft him. lol

The only guy close in terms to measurables is Floyd but Im not too familiar with his play tho.

Millers forty is retarded for a 255 lb guy.

I've always thought Dodd and Calhoun were better suited to 4-3 DE, and that Lawson could kind of go either way, with Floyd as probably the best fit at OLB in a 3-4. I would agree that there's not a Von Miller in this draft, but Floyd is the closest thing after Bosa.

Just last week I was reading where NFL.com did their 4.0 mock and had the Bears picking Floyd at 11. At the time I was trying to make sense of it. But perhaps its not all that far fetched. As you pointed out he's really small (in overall weight) but could put on some weight and be the 'Von Miller' type we need? Wasn't Fox in Denver when they drafted Miller? Probably would know what to look for if that were the direction the team was going.

Although after some of the discussions we've seen where the team tried, and failed, to land CJ Anderson, makes you wonder if they aren't looking at an RB in the first 2-3 rounds.

They could go so many ways with that first pick. I think they valve the RB a lot in this offense and could see them take EZ if still there. Also we need playmakers on D and if they think one of the ones Jason listed as worth it, they could draft him too.

I wanna see Christian Jones get a look at OLB.

Hasn't that happened already?

1 yr outside then last year inside, sounds like what Shea McClellin just went through except starting at DE first. Its time to start playing guys in their best position and now there is a confirmed reason why Jones went undrafted by all 32 teams. He can't make plays on the NFL level.

I think in all fairness he (Jones) hasn't really been evaluated by a legitimate DC until last year. Before Fangio came along Mel Tucker was the one calling the shots and well, we know how that ended up.

JOnes must have had some relevance if he was still on the team last year. Granted Timu started seeing the field late in the season but again that was more in the ILB position. Perhaps Jones could play OLB? He has the speed and range so why not give it a shot? If Fangio sees it as a possibility I'm good with it.

Bears have only been a 3-4 team for 1 year. Yes I believe he played some OLB 2 years ago but a 4-3 OLB and a 3-4 OLB are different animals.

I think he can be a better rush LB than a middle LB.

With McPhee, Houston, and Young on the roster, I would rather look at him as a potential future player than drafting one high.

I couldnt make an honest assessment on where he belongs, but I trust Fox and Fan and its looking like they dont think much of him or he would have seen more time on the field. When Anderson and Timu starts ahead of him that is not a good thing.

AG but he has been scouted by 32 teams' scouts and went undrafted and besides you don't think Fangio is the reason Timu saw the field and Trevathan and Freeman were brought in at the same position?

Can I ask why you want to see him at OLB. He has been an ILB since college, what about him makes you think he can switch to OLB and get better?

If you watch this highlight video, you'll see he has lined up on the outside before, and looked solid.

Right now he's behind Trev, Freeman, and Timu(maybe even Jonathan Anderson) at ILB, so I don't see the risk in seeing if he can work out in the future as an OLB.

Below is an article I found that was written about Jones coming out of college. Makes for a great read especially if you look at it with the Seattle Seahawk consideration the author gives at the end. In a nutshell, Jones hasn't really had an opportunity to play what amounts to his 'natural' position. In fact coming out of High School he was a 5 star prospect playing OLB. And according to the article both his brother and dad (Willie who played for Oakland) played OLB and did pretty good doing it. Like someone mentioned I think Jones has enough raw talent that with McPhee, Young and Houston all on the roster he could at least contribute for depth. I'd rather not see a draft spot be used if we already have a player of Jones' potential on the roster.

Just seen where Chandler Jones just got traded to AZ for Jon Cooper and a 2nd rounder. The guy we should have drafted instead of Shea.

First of all he has been in the league 3 years now and that was an edited youtube video that showed nothing that makes me think he could move to the outside and become a disruptive force like Von Miller, Clay Mathews, Terrell Suggs, DeMarcus Ware...etc. After the recent moves we have made that's the missing piece imo Willie Young this year could step up in that role but another guy that scares the crap out of the opponents is needed not a lets see if he can blossom in this spot guy like Jones and Shea and back in the day John Thierry!

Right but that's for ILB, not OLB. I think he should be re-evaluated in that position.

And whether its worth considering, he was alleged to have been thought as a round 2-3 talent but had some drug issue pop up just before the draft. Hence why they think he went undrafted.

That part I know but to this point he has made no impact whatsoever and Willie Young and Lamar Houston also play the same position and IMO Pernell McPhee is an OLB playing DE , thinking that is the reason why he is getting injured a lot. This is not a real big guy and the recent additions plus Goldman, Onrein, Sutton and Ferguson could make PMack a rush specialist.

watched the video, there were 3 plays where he lined up outside and rushed the passer against a Tackle. He looked good. Not really a whole to go off of but if he is going to sit behind everyone at ILB why not give him a try at OLB.

Fangio knows what he is looking for when it comes to players and what positions they would be best at. We will see if Fangio agrees with you. Like I said I agree with you, if he is sitting why not.

Here's a comparison of Von Miller and Jones:

Von Miller - 6'3", 254#, 4.53 forty, 33.5 arms, 37" vert., 10.6" broad, 6.7 3-cone

C. Jones - 6'3". 240#, 4.74 / 40, 33.5 arms, 33.5 vert., 9'6" broad, ???? cone

As far as height and weight he's pretty comparable. Not quite as good in all the combine skills (although I would've sworn he looks faster). And you have to consider Miller was a first round pick, Jones was not. Nevertheless, probably better (and younger) than most of our current OLB's. Again the biggest thing against him (IMHO) is his 'rawness'.

And besides that SCS wants to see him give it a shot and he's either the real Ryan Pace or the second coming so it's pretty much a guarantee. B)
