AZ54
This is interesting. I would say Cro's price has come down enough that Pace will talk to him plus we haven't seen much from our young CBs (at least I haven't). With Fuller on the shelf for a few weeks it might be worthwhile to bring in a proven vet who can step in right away and play better than any of the backups behind Callahan. Perhaps more importantly is that it would keep Callahan inside where we have even less depth. The question then becomes one of filling out the special teams roster but I think we've seen enough goodness on special teams from a lot of depth players that they can figure out how to get around that if they choose to. http://www.windycitygridiron.com/2016/8/19...cromartie-today

Great player and strong veteran presence but I'm not sure I like the motivation. A couple issues. 1) I thought we were in a 'youth movement'? Didn't we lose Slausen, Peanut and Forte due to them being older and less reliable? We can see how losing one or two solid pieces (even if older) the line has had a hard time rebounding from. And in the def backfield; we have a lot of uncertainty opposite Porter (another oldie but goodie - more on him in a second). 2) this to me smells of a little desperation. I didn't realize our CB corps was so injured. 2-3 potential starters are laid up for various reasons yet now we may consider a 10 year vet (who himself has an injury history) as a replacement. On paper this seems counter intuitive. Now the good side. Porter, for as old as he is, has really done well and played beyond his years, last year and this year so far. Cromartie, I feel, could be just as good if not better. I like the thought of him being able to stick. But then again I would have liked keeping Forte, Slausen and Peanut too. According to the article linked, it says: The 32 year old has only missed 2 games in the last eight seasons, so durability hasn’t been a problem. So I am not sure where the durability issue comes from, although any player is subject to injuries and the older you are the more likely that might happen. Peanut retired, I am sure, because he was getting injured and missing significant time the last 2-3 years. If we sign AC to a reasonable contract with incentives for one year while we try and get our DB situation figured out I think it would definately be a positibe move. I also would not mind, as rumors have indicated, the Bears adding a better option for center on our OL.
Connorbear
Pass. I see this as another rebuilding year and would rather give opportunities to our young DBs. Peace
BearFan PHX
I dont think we cut Slauson so much due to age, as due to switching to a more athletic style of blocking, where we ask guards to move further faster. He would have been a good option to have at Center, but you cant see injuries coming, and you cant keep a starter for insurance behind every starter. Peanut retired, there was no keeping him. Slausen didnt fit the blocking system even thou I did not like to see him go. Forte is on the downhill slide, you need to let go of the past and see what there are going to do here. The reason we are bringing older DBs in is because we have injuries and that is all that is out there. Some people on here just want to keep reliving the past. Peanut was my favorite Bear for many years but I understand why we let him go.In Carolina, he played but was injured. With age you have more susceptible to a bad body. Forte wanted a big paycheck and is on the downhill slide. I hope he does well but I suspect he will be pedestrian and hurt alot. It was time for him to go. Good teams dont pay old players they get rid of them the year before they fall off the cliff, not pay them to fall. I like everything this regime is doing trying to get better. People hang on to old heroes and for what? Last time I checked we have not been very good for a very long time. Lets look to the future. This has nothing to do with 'holding onto the past' but rather if we're doing a youth movement, we need to stick to that . Not bring in old players with nagging injuries. That being said, perhaps Cromartir could play some safety to prolong his career(?) I'm fairly certain Peanut could have had he decided to make the move. That was just something he wasn't interested in. Something tells me Forte has a few more productive years in him. But we'll see.

But we'll see. you are right it is a youth movement but you cant always fit the program with undrafted free agents to just fill a spot, sometimes you have to fit a position with a competent player, it is not a perfect plan. It one season you can never fill all weaknesses so you have some spare parts you have to use to get where you need to go. It will take 3 drafts to get most of our depth to be a competent team. Alaskan Grizzly
IN other news; Cromartie is said to be in Indy where a "desperate Colts team" is looking for some DB help. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000068...desperate-colts Guessing the Bears are done with him. AZ54
Update he has just signed with the Colts....next? After watching the 2nd half against the Patriots some of the depth at CB played better than I expected. I haven't had a chance to see Bausby or Glenn much. Even Porter came out and said we're good with the players we have. Maybe we let the youth learn.
