First preseason game tonight

My conclusion after tonight's game is that the Bears are going to blow this year, but Trubisky looks really good. He very easily could have had 3 TD's tonight. I was really blown away by his accuracy. I had heard Pace talk about it extensively after the draft, but I didn't realize he was THAT good with his ball placement. Some of the throws he was making on the move tonight reminded me a little bit of Romo or Rodgers.

 

His deep ball looks like it could use a lot of work, but other than that, there wasn't a single bad thing you could say about him tonight. I also love how he quietly had almost 40 yards on the ground tonight. His ability to run, as well as throwing it, will always keep the defense honest. Watching him tonight got me pumped for the future. It's only one game, but damn. Kid looked really good out there. Hats off to him.

Dak Prescott played against 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers last year in pre-season too before Tony Romo got hurt. His first few drives came against Denver's 2nd unit, so it's not like he was only out there against a garbage crew.

 

But yes, I do agree that we shouldn't get too carried away over one pre-season game. But the stuff we did see tonight, I think there is definitely a legitimate reason for optimism.

i really don't think we will suck this year. our defense is starting to come together and give our DB's some time to get sorted out and gel together i think they should be adequate. don't forget mcphee is coming back and hicks and gold looked pretty good.

 

on offense... it is certainly too early to tell anything yet. glennon will get better as the season goes on and i'm really hoping he does. he also wasn't working with all of our starters on the OL. wait for the dust to settle on this. one question, was grasu in the game last night?

 

trubisky - i was really impressed with his accuracy. it's still way to early to tell yet but wow, if he continues to improve mentally we could have something special. i am hoping glennon looks good and gives trubinsky that year he needs to put it together.

 

as far as fox goes, i don't see any problem with him at all. i would like to keep this coaching staff intact and hope fox sticks for a couple more years at least. the jury is still out on our OC but we shall see how he does later in the season. i'm really liking fangio's part as our DC. the tackling in this first game was very good. once we start to gel as a unit they could be very good. superbowl ready... doubtful this year but we are building the foundation for a really good team.

Offensively

 

Glennon... um thought Jay was gone. He seriously looked shaky. Bad ball placement on most of his passes. Pick 6 on the first series then later a turnover on a bad snap (albeit that wasn't Glennon's fault) He looked like a career backup trying to be a starter.

 

First team offense overall looked out of sync and sloppy. Line play wasn't very good especially run blocking. There were a few runs where there was daylight and our RB's would just plow into t the mass of bodies when they could have bounced it outside. Receivers dropping balls that should be caught, maybe they were surprised by a catchable ball. All in all the 1s on offense didn't look sharp, didn't improve much if any with Mr. Butt Fumle. Though he seemed to make better decisions than Glennon.

 

Trubisky looked sharp from the get go. I know it's preseason but like others have said it's hard not to get a little excited about him. There definitely felt like a change in the attitude and moxy of the offense when he came in. He looked confident, and made it look effortless. I had the same thought as Bowlingtwig, that I made the comment while watching that it's been some time since we've seen a Bears QB look that good. his first three drives 50yds TD, 75 yds TD, and then the FG drive that was practically an extra point FG. He got a shot at regaining the lead with a 4th quarter drive under 2 min. Sure it was against 2nd and 3rd stringers but by the same token had he looked awful or pedestrian or say like Glennon against backups that would have been reason to be concerned. Things that jump out to me are of course the ball placement is amazing, the accuracy both from the pocket and on the run. He made it look effortless. The pocket presence something that you either have or you don't. He appears to have the ability to sense where the pressure will come from and and can either buy time to make a play or make a play with his feet. His deep ball does need a little work. I was glad to see there were no bad exchanges from under center. He had some fumbled snaps in practice.

 

Where was Kevin White I know I saw someone wearing #11 but was he even targeted? I was hoping to see him at least somewhat involved.

 

Shaheen and Cohen looked good too. Shaheen has good hand and quickness for his size, he could turn out to be a future starter. Cohen looks like a good elusive change of pace back/specialist kind of like a Sproles or Megget type. Dude is short but he has playmaking ability.

 

 

Defense

 

Wow, I expected a hit and miss showing with some sloppiness, but the tackling was crisp for a first preseason game. I think there was only a couple missed tackles that I remember seeing. Some really nice stops short of the sticks including a 4th down stop. No picks or turnovers but should have had 1 for sure it went through the DB's hands. Coverage was much better than it's been. Didn't get sloppy till the 4th quarter. The depth on our D has definitely improved to give up just 3 points and something 100 yards allowed through 3 quarters. Much of that yardage on Denver's lone scoring drive early in the first half. Would like to see some turnovers forced but for a a first preseason game It's a good showing and a good place to start. IF they get better from here and stay healthy this could be a dominant D that will keep us in game.

 

Special teams

 

Much improved both in the return game and the coverage game. I think that is due to the bottom end of the roster improving over previous seasons. Makes a huge difference when you can control field position.

I agree here we won't likely make a push to contend this year but, I do see this defense keeping us in games. The #1 offense looked sloppy as a unit in the first preseason game. The offense may take longer to gel than the D. We will definitely be competitive this year and may surprise some people.

I'd be good with this as long as he deserves to stay this season could be the make or break for him. Successful teams have continuity in system and staff it is a key to sustained success. That does't mean you keep bad coaching for continuity that just breeds sustained failure. Agree 100% that Fangio needs to stay but if you get a new head coach do you limit the options if you make whoever you get keep a coordinator. With Fangio it might not be a hard sell, maybe he could be made assistant coach/DC. Perhaps he could replace Fox at some point as HC?

You hit on a big point about trubisky. It's got nothing to do with the stats because well who cares it did mostly come against guys want probably won't make the team. But it was his ability to sense the pocket breaking down and moved. With Jay he would move but he would get happy toes and seemed to freak out. Trubisky just seemed so cool about it. Then it was his ability to hit receivers while on the move and with accuracy. I'll wait to see what happens in 8 days but a great start. And I'll say it again. None of us really want trubisky to get thrown into the fire right away but if Glennon continues to look like he did and trubisky continues this there will be enough pressure from all over to put him in

Seriously, Glennon is going to make this an easy decision, 0-3 and an INT for a Pick-6. Seriously, you could not start any worse.

Yes, it was a bad game for him and a great game for Mitch, but that doesn't mean we should annoit Mitch yet. It was a little bit of football. Mitch looked fantastic (and that was a huge plus). He showcased all the skills/tools/athleticism he has, but he still has a lot to learn, given his limited experience. He isn't as ready as yesterday's game might lead some to believe, but it was better to see him go out and do that vs. stink up the joint. Cohen also looked quite good as did the entire oline (albeit, teams are playing very vanilla in preseason, especially game 1).

 

All in all, that was about as fun of a preseason game as I can ever remember (I didn't even get that mad when our 4th string defense embarassed itself on two 3rd and longs). Despite the poor play from the 1st string offense, there were a lot of really big positives to come out of the game. Trubisky's accuracy and poise were impressive as was his athleticism. He should have had a couple more completions, which is incredible.

 

All that said, if he actually goes out and produces like this is another couple preseason games, Glennon is going to start feeling the heat (and to be honest, based upon his quotes and attitude on the sidelines, I think he is already feeling it). Glennon needs to take a step back because it would be good if he can play solid and give Trubisky time to learn and really be a good understudy.

I have been disgusted with the Bears for a while now but damn, what is not to like about last nights game (im sure there is something). It is just refreshing to see a QB get the ball out quick, move in the pocket to avoid pressure etc. i dont care who he was up against, he looked good and i am excited damn it. he seemed very poised to me

That's insane. I know he had one intentionally incomplete pass to stop the clock, and then there was the Daniel Brown drop and the Cruz drop that cost him some completion % numbers too. The deep ball he threw to Cruz also should have been a flag, which wouldn't have counted had that play been properly ruled.

 

The only true miss throws he had I think were the two batted balls and the last one that went out of bounds as time expired.

 

So, yeah.. Trubisky's accuracy is really freakin good!

I think Wentz has a bright future but let's hope Trubisky does better than what Wentz did last year. Wentz's play against the Bears last year was the highlight of his season and after that it went downhill.

I had the fiance record game for me I watched it over the weekend. Wow is all I can say. Trubisky obviously is the highlight but that sack by Floyd. He put on weight and that play flashed that he still had the speed to go with it. Very impressive. That Bullard play to blow up the ball carrier was something else coming straight up the gut like that. The oline as a whole played well. My only thing is the defense needs to create turnovers

After re-watching the first game there a couple things that stood out.

 

Oline: Even with backups in there we still had decent pass protection. Run blocking was hit and miss on all units but in years past once we had our backups on the field it was like a jail break with defenders all over the QB. Overall it appears we've made some progress adding depth to the Oline but Arizona will give a better indication. I don't know if Morgan was any good but I have seen a couple positive comments regarding him at training camp.

 

I'm a bit surprised nobody commented on Compton getting the start at LG over Grasu. I expected Whitehair to be at LG with Grasu at Center, or maybe ideally we'd have seen Grasu start at LG. With Kush out Grasu's chances of making the 53 improved but it appears he's still in a battle for a roster spot.

 

 

Special teams was also improved with more consistent play (again for a first preseason game).
