Will Kyle Fuller be the next young talent Ryan Pace can't hold on to?

The way Fuller has been playing this season, it's pretty obvious that he's in line to receive a big payday from somebody at the end of the year, providing he can maintain this level of play throughout the season.

One of the cardinal rules in team building is to not let your young talent go in free agency to let other teams reap the benefits. Pace has already let that happen once with Alshon Jeffery. Although, it is fair to point out that Jeffery didn't want to be in Chicago, although I suspect some of it may have had to do with the rocky relationship he had with Fox. Not sure where Pace fits in with having influence there, but regardless, the same thing applies now to Kyle Fuller. He's another young and talented player that the Bears absolutely cannot let walk in free agency. My concern isn't so much that they would be unwilling to pay him, but that the Bears certainly haven't done themselves any favors by the way they've tried to portray Fuller over the last couple of seasons in the media: which is basically that he's soft and lazy/not serious about football.

For a roster already devoid of so much talent, it would be a major setback to let a still young, up and coming CB walk when you have so many needs elsewhere on a roster that you have to figure out how to improve.

Is anybody else worried that deja vu will strike again in the off-season, because I sure am. Like Jeffery, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fuller wants nothing to do with the Bears in the off-season. I don't think not picking up his option was the wrong move, but I'm sure that couldn't have made him feel any better about his situation with the Bears that was already rocky to begin with.

I did not know that Jeffery was the second coming of Jerry Rice. I'm glad we let that putz go. Whine, whine, whine. Jeffery did NOTHING here to prove he deserved $. Yes, we're WR disfunctional NOW. But 20-20 hindsight? Get off the Jeffery was the guy bandwagon. He's not, never was and probably never will be.

I think Pace was 100% correct to skip the 5th year option on Fuller. There is nothing wrong with earning your keep and his play didn't merit a 5th year at that price. If he earns it consistently this year I have zero issues paying him the going rate for a CB. He's not elite CB material because at best he'll have 1 good year in 4 but he could earn a very good much contract better than his original 5th year would have paid him. For that he'll have to thank Pace. Amukamara might be in the same spot. Pay both if it's earned and draft a young player to build some depth. Cooper is not a bad option as the 3rd CB IMO but I'd like someone with more talent in the pipeline.

Just thinking how we were skeptical of our DBs before the season. If they can gain some confidence and continue playing the way they are, our backfield could be a strength going forward. Hope we can keep Prince and Fuller, the have been solid. Amos has new life, Callahan is one of the better nickel backs, Cooper competing to start, Jackson playing like a pro, and we have Demps if We want to keep him around. Then we have Hall, Bush, Carson-Houston, LeBlanc for youth to groom. I would be good if we spend on Fuller before the end of the year if we have the cap and as long as he continues his game.

I don't see Fuller in the same light as Jeffery. Fuller has disappointed most of his rookie contract and has only really came on this year (after his 5th year option was not picked up). Now even if we picked up his 5th year option, if he performed like this all year, I am sure we would extend him at the end of the year anyway. Right now he is playing like a #1 CB, which based on the current deals for guys around his age, will get him a contract between $9-10 million a year. His current cap hit is around $3mil, so that would be a considerable raise.

If he continues to play at this level, you have to extend him, and I wouldn't mind even doing it in this season (before he can become a FA).

Hindsight is always 20/20. Fuller looked promising as a rookie then his play declined, how many years did we expect him to be in the cut list. This year he has no doubt stepped up his game, but that was not a known quantity when the decision was made not to pick up his 5th year. Maybe that motivated him, maybe it lit a much needed fire under him, maybe at this stage in his career he's starting to put it all together. Whatever the reason he's playing at a high level, thus far and it is a pleasant surprise. I don't have a problem with us paying him, even during this season. He needs to keep it up to truly earn it.

Jeffery, wanted out we offered him a long term deal he passed it up for a 1 year deal in Philly. I have him on my fantasy team and he has not produced to the level of his hype. He just isn't a one man show. Jeffery's best play has been when he had a stud opposite him (Marshall). Now that he is drawing the top coverage with not much on the other side to keep the defenses from focusing on shutting him down. It is a sign of respect for his skills but Jeffery is a better #2 than a #1 that he thinks he is. Could we use him now? Sure, but he'd most assuredly see the same defensive focus here maybe even more so cause outside him who would defenses fear? What we need is a true #1 that can lead our WR's and help them by drawing coverage. Currently all we have is supporting cast.

The 2 situations are completely different. Trying to link the 2 together is quite the stretch. For starters it was public knowledge Jeffrey didn't want to bring here unless we robbed the bank to pay him. Funny no one else did that and he was stuck signing a 1 yr prove it deal. We were the only team offering him a long term deal. Now with fuller. Can anyone find me a single team that would have picked up that 5th yr option after what he has done prior to this yr? Of course not. Many questioned why he was even still on the roster. So don't tell me how he's been treated horribly because we didn't pick that option up. And he missed all of last yr on an injury that shouldn't have even kept him out half the yr. So ppl calling him soft it's actually justified. And the more important aspect is $$. To sign fuller long term it won't take anywhere near the type of $ that Jeffrey wanted so I don't see that being an issue

Agree with almost all of this, but Demps is awful. All those broken plays the first few weeks were on him. I'm never glad to see anyone injured, but I am glad he is out of the lineup, and dont ever really want to see him in there again. That guy will lose games for you.

The rest tho? Absolutely, the secondary is starting to look decent. The whole defense is coming together. I'd like to see Floyd step up some too.

Demps was supposed to be the glue back there, but it never cured. If the release him, it would be great because Amos and Co have surpassed his veteran value. If they keep him, then Bush and whoever is behind him haven't progressed enough to be viable backups.

I keep my fingers crossed on Floyd and Bullard, they both need to become foot holds on the front. I cringe when I see Unrein, not because he is bad, but I want Bullard to be to good to sit out. Hopefully in time these youngins get there.

Totally agree. Forgot to even mention Bullard. If Floyd and Bullard come on, this team is dangerous on D.

Bullard was awesome this week. Supposedly it was the first week where he was "healthy" and it showed. Great to see. In terms of Floyd, he was all over the field. He is constantly getting double-teamed and is still getting pressure all while being a good run defender and playing strong in the pass defense. The guy is a complete backer who can get to the QB. Will be great to see the sacks climb, but he's going to need to get more help from McPhee / whomever else is opposite of him.

Not for nothing but apparently Hicks is leading the team with 6 sacks. Who knew? Didn’t seem like he had that many but good on him.

And just in case you were curious; Jones leads overall combined tackles at 41 and Fuller leads with individual tackles at 31.
