Fangio staying: how about Donatell?

I’m starting to believe Fangio isn’t coming back. Taking too long for him to decide. I saw something before where when Fox was hired, Fangio came in quickly afterward. Was similar when Harbaugh had him as DC. This doesn’t smell right.

We got Fangio over a simular situation. A position coach getting the HC'ing job he interviewed for. And Fangio was sure to make sure it was an actual HC interview this time and not a courtesy. The fact he hasn't ran off somewhere already is a good thing, and at least a chance he will stay.

Yeah, here’s a story about that very thing. https://247sports.com/nfl/chicago-bears/Bol...staff-113531733

I think it is also on the Bears, not just Fangio. IMO, the Bears are not offering him what he is asking.

There was twitter report out there that the Bears were looking to meet with the Cardinals DC for a position on the staff. He is an awesome DC and is going to be a HC one day. Would be a dynamic hire if Fangio is going elsewhere. I’d argue he is a better DC, however, he’s also far more likely to leave to be a HC (vs. Fangio who I think if you do sign him stays for his tenure).

A big key here is the Cardinals run a 3-4. I do not want a DC who is going to run a 4-3. The Bears have worked for a few years to get to this point, and changing back would be a mess.

Agree and It's wise to keep our options open should Vic not stay. I think he'd be a good hire in that scenario. I too don't want us to switch back to a 4-3. Not because I'm that big of a fan of the 3-4 but for the reason you mentioned, the D is currently built for a 3-4, switching back will set the D back. Ideally getting Vic back would be my first choice because he knows our guys, they know him, and they know his system it would provide continuity and stability.

That said Bettcher would be a good hire. He's done a good job with the Cardinals D and being a 3-4 guy he can build on the foundation Fangio has built. I'm sure there will be other names to come up. The delay may be partly due to Vic waiting to see if he gets any more HC interview opportunities before agreeing to stay. From his perspective he would have more opportunities if his returning as DC here were reportedly a done deal. I could partly explain the ambiguity on whether he'll stay or go. If he truly wants a HC gig he's going to want to be "available" till that window closes. The Bears may not want to wait that out though.

I agree and the fact this rumor is out there (in many places) indicates Nagy agrees too. He has a successful defense no need start over from scratch on that side too.

Latest reports have Fangio headed to Arizona to be DC under Shermer (sp?). This would mean Vic stringed Bears along (wouldn't surprise me) and would mean we have to put full court press on Arizona's current DC (who would be a stellar hire).

I believe you that there are reports, but youd figure theyd hire the head coach first?

Worst case scenario is they promote the DC from within to HC and Fangio goes to be DC.

Here’s a story on that: https://247sports.com/nfl/chicago-bears/Bol...eport-113591557

Could it be Fangio feels jilted due to him being a ‘known’ in Chicago and still didn’t get the HC job? Maybe even more discouraged that a relative unknown up and comer got the job over him?

No worries though, according to the above article (and confirming what others here have said) it sounds as though this Boettcher would be a good hire. Put together some pretty strout Ds. ... and he’s young... Sorta the theme with this current staff.

It comes down to 2 things, money or he has talked to Shumar and wants to go to warm weather. Shurmur can't take a job until after playoffs.

Given the speed Nagy is operating at on the offensive side I get the feeling he's not going to wait much longer on Fangio to make a decision. We don't really know if he was considering Bradley or Pettine as viable options but assuming they were then he's lost out on both. If Nagy views Bettcher as next best option he's not going to wait and watch him also land elsewhere and then watch Vic ride off into the sunset for a warmer climate.

If that is how they view Bettcher: It's Fri and games start tomorrow which means more coaching positions get filled this weekend and thus more competition for coordinators and position coaches. I suggest Pace give Fangio his best and final offer with a deadline of noon for an answer. If it ain't happening move on.

It's possible there are other candidates (not already DCs) on playoff teams we might have interest in but I have to think Bettcher's proven track record makes him a better option.

Couple problems with bettcher. 1 is that he's a candidate for the AZ hc job and he won't take a DC job here until he knows about the HC job and 2 if that he's still under contract through the 2018 season so even if we wanted him we would still have to ask permission just to interview him. Considering there are 4 other teams that haven't even hired a HC yet I don't see the hurry although I do think all will be fine by early next week as once teams start getting eliminated from playoffs we will start seeing hires in Indy and such. That's when it still become more of a hurry

No I think Lovie should be the OC. He’s a great DC and ok HC so he could be a good OC.

Lol...that’s actually funny. Just like I think you’d be a great news editor! You just never know though right?

Although I think they have the offense pretty well covered with Nagy and the guy from Oregon. And the retread oline coach from ND .
