I am not saying he will not make a contribution in his first year. My point is the high expectations will not be realized his first or even second year. He is very young and has a good coach to teach him. On the other hand , if we get the chance to draft Nelson, he would have instant impact at a position we also need an upgrade. If Nelson is there, I am all in on Edmunds as our pick.

While I agree 100% that Nelson would be an instant and significant upgrade over the current starting LG, I think Edmunds is an instant upgrade over Kwit at ILB.  He will not have as much impact on the D's performance as Nelson should have on the O.   For sure the high expectations, if they are met, wouldn't be realized for 2 to 3 years.

It is an interesting choice because choosing either player could make that side of the ball dominant.

A couple of points.

Decent OL are more easily found int he 2nd round than impact defensive players.

Also, impact ILB are RARE. The reason Edmunds could be such a difference maker is that you put a difference maker like him on the field and you can STILL put players in 2 OLB positions and on the defensive line.

In other words, over time as you fill out your team, Edmunds allows you to create a defense that's got extra dimension.

Nelson is a stud, there is no doubt. But he won't take over a game in the NFL the way that Edmunds will be able to.

Also, the idea that Edmunds won't contribute right away is wrong too. He needs to learn some patience, so he will be fooled at some points, but it's not as if he needs a year int he weight room or anything. Physically, he is ready to go out of the box.

Seriously, imagine passing on Ray Lewis because he isn't a pass rusher.

The odds of Nelson even being available at 8 are slim. He is literally the best player in the class.  Teams may see him as a LT too, since ND played him at G doesn't mean he is not capable.  It is hard to be excited about Nelson, but I want the highest level of protection for Trubisky.  If he is gone, than I am all aboard the Tremaine Edmunds train.
