Who did we want to trade up to get?

Pace admitted that he was trying to trade back into round #1.  When this broke, it was around pick #25.  I assumed it was for either an o-lineman or edge rusher, the two most glaring holes , which are also the most important next to QB.  There were no o-linemen or edge rushers taken at the end of the draft.  That means there's a good chance that the guy we were targeting is still available.

Any guesses who it might be?  If he's still there, I'm sure we are offering a 2nd and 4th rounder to jump up a few spots.

How many edge rushers does one team need?  Isn’t the role Floyd is slated for?

If there are more needed, someone else suggested Lorenzo Carter (also from Georgia).  Would be interesting to see a bunch of Georgia dogs out there eating up opposing offenses.  I think a large part of the Bulldogs success was/is due to their defense (which is crazy considering Mel Tucker is their coordinator).

Anyhow some have noticed the precipitous fall of Ohio States Landry which is intriguing.  They think he may have a malingering injury that worries some. Would he be worth the shot?

But then connor noted Will Hernandez is still available And he was a hot commodity right after Nelson so there is that...

I went into this thinking the smart choice would be Olineman for round two (nod to Jason) and still do.  But I can’t help notice Sutton and Chubb (the running back) still sitting there too.  I’m always a fan of skill  players.

I have to think it was Calvin Ridley. My gut is we had a pretty high grade on him, not worthy of going anywhere close to 8, but overall liked him a lot and would have liked to add him.  I presume Landry is one of the first off the board, but I think the Bears would love to get him or Carter.  If a pass rusher is there that they like, I think they go that way, otherwise they might move down and go oline or wideout.  I think one of pass rusher, Oline, WR, DB (only because Jackson could just a be a stellar value pick on their big board)

At least 3.  They can come from anywhere on the front 7.

Thanks.  Admittedly I’m not as familiar with the 3-4 set still.  Always think of the DE as the edge rusher but in a 3-4 they seem to be more an edge setter.  I mean when you have a 330 lb DE like Hicks, you can’t expect too much speed rushing.  Not every down anyhow.

Floyd is not a pure edge rusher. Floyd is also a strong coverage linebacker, etc. He's a complete linebacker who also gets the pass rusher. On the opposite side you'd want someone a little more specialized. The nice thing is, Smith is also a very complete lb'er..can cover and generate a pass rush from the inside.  While Carter is more raw, he too would be able to do those things. Landry, on the other hand, would be more of the pure pass rushing type, at least early on, as he struggled with coverage.

Landry's stats were down, but he was playing with a bum ankle and had zero talent around him. He was the most double-teamed / schemed defensive linemen in the country and while his sacks and production were down, its hard to discount those points and the fact that he has a very quick first step and to be frank, likely learned a lot from this past year where he received all that attention (which could help him in the future).

Landry could very well be one of those guys where everyone looks back a couple years from now and says, man, we really should have discounted that second season with his bum ankle and looked more at what he did when he was healthy (if he repeated what he did a year ago, he' s likely taken ahead of Bradley Chubb).

He was trying to go up and get Landry.  A first round rated player that had some medical issues.  As someone said,  Hernandez isn't really a fit in our scheme but Daniel's is a blue chipper. Another he might have wanted was Oliver/CB who still could be there at 39.

well, pass rushers in the 3-4 can come from anywhere, but in a base defense, no matter what alignment you're using, you're rushing four players.

We're so used to the 4-3 alignment, we think of two edge rushers, meaning each defensive end.

But in a 3-4 base defense, you're going to be rushing your three linemen, and one linebacker. One thing about the 3-4 is you can mix up which linebacker youre going to bring.

But usually, you have a best pass rushing OLB, and that's the guy you're going to send most of the time. For us, that's Floyd. And the pass rusher on the other edge of the 4 man rush is... Hicks!

You wouldn't take two pass rushing specialists at OLB. I mean, you wouldnt pay the going rate for an all pro pass rushing OLB on both sides. Because unless you're blitzing, you're using one of those guys to do something else rather than rush the passer. And if you're paying him like an edge rusher, and asking him to cover, which might not even be his strength, then you're wasting that value.

So if the Bears were going to bolster the pass rush on 3-4 base sets, they'd have looked for another DE, maybe Vita Vea, who I think would be amazing for us too.

A good part of the time, especially in situations where we need a pass rush, we're going to be in nickel. That's a four man line. Floyd and Hicks will be the toughest players to block. A pass rushing specialist who puts his hand on the ground is the player to add in those sets. Again, more of a DE type than an OLB type tho. A little bigger, and stronger?

So Lorenzo Carter, maybe, but not Harold Landry?
